To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

my dog would never forgive me if i didnt slice off the end of the carrot for her consumption
dishwasher is crazy
unless you are using everything in the dishwasher for one meal?

Kornvallmo · 13/08/2024 21:15

Tip of the iceberg Hmm I tell ya.

Beyond lazy…

In an ideal world people like us would have 2 dishwashers one for cleans the other for dirties!

But how would that work if you never empty them? You'll eventually end up with two dishwashers half full of clean stuff, surely.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 13/08/2024 21:17

Dishwasher. I don't get it sorry.

Carrots. Don't you cut them up anyway? Or do you just boil and eat them whole? Unless they were baby, I'd be chopping them up anyway.

I will grab clothes whilst they are still on the clothes horse, but eventually they all need to come off for the next lot.

MonsteraMama · 13/08/2024 21:19

Why are you boiling carrots whole often enough for this to even be a consideration? Who eats just boiled whole carrots?

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 13/08/2024 21:21

OP you think you're being efficient but actually you're being hugely wasteful and probably costing yourself a lot of money

Boiling a whole carrot = 10/15 minutes vs boiling sliced carrots = 4/5 mins. Let's say you have carrots twice a week. That's boiling a pan for 17 hours a year longer than if you could be arsed to chop it. Not to mention you probably are throwing away a lot of good carrot with the end.

And if you run the dishwasher every night, even if it is full of half clean stuff for a household of 1 adult and 1 child, you are doing so far more frequently than if you'd let it build up over a couple of days.

So you're spending c£50 more on energy than someone running it 3 x a week and probably the same again on extra dishwasher tablets and salt. Perhaps £100 a year more to run your dishwasher every day

And it's not recommended to run it daily - if so it can reduce the lifespan 2-3 years more quickly than those who don't run it everyday

You might see these things as efficient but actually you're burning cash

Bodeganights · 13/08/2024 21:22

I could do the dishwasher thing with two dishwashers, in fact I saw this on some homes show and it was for a tiny kitchen. It could work well.
The carrots, why bother snapping the end off, either buy ready cut or boil the whole thing and dont eat the green end.
The clothes, well if I lived alone I might do similar. But I use the dryer and when I'm working I wash it, dry it, pile it, pick my work uniform off the pile, and on and on. Small pile, I only have three uniforms.

If I had a spare room I might bother with clothes horse.

heymammy · 13/08/2024 21:23

I don't do any of your examples op but I do get weird looks in the supermarket when, instead of taking each item out of my basket and placing it on the conveyor belt, I just gently (and carefully) tip the basket contents onto the belt all at once.

lalaloopyhead · 13/08/2024 21:24

I wouldn't say it's lazy, just a bit weird.

The carrot thing doesn't make sense, surely you end up snapping a lot more off the end than quickly chopping it, even if you then cook it whole? I am tempted to go and try it but I imagine at least 1/4 to 1/3 snapping off. I am not entirely convinced cooking carrots whole would work well anyway. Then if you are cutting it up on your plate you are expanding the same amount of time and energy as if you had done it the :normal' way to start with.

The dishwasher thing would imply you can get every pot and pan in at the same time, which again doesn't seem practical.

Clothes, no issue with this - carry on 🤣

Meagainforfun · 13/08/2024 21:26

So you waste money cooking veg longer because you don't want to cut it smaller, you endlessly rewash pots even if they are clean (so wearing off any coating or varnish over time) . Leaving clothes on airer sounds lazy to me and possibly a sign of not really valuing yourself enough to take care of your self and your home properly.

Apileofballyhoo · 13/08/2024 21:29

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:32

@Apileofballyhoo thank you for making me feel less alone!!! It does make sense doesn’t it?!

I was thinking of this earlier as the carrots were skinny and so they went into the pot whole. I also realised I often just quickly peel the stump off rather than cut it off. Chopped them up roughly with the serving spoon when they were cooked before dishing them up.

I'm sure there is more stuff I do too that seems odd to others. Usually don't bother with a plate if I'm eating toast. Don't take the dry clothes off the line before heading out with a basket of wet, I just take them off one by one as I'm hanging out the wet ones. Always shake them and fold them as I go as I don't iron (exception DS school uniform if trousers need it and shirts if it's a warm enough day that he might take off his jumper). Often don't fully unpack shopping, just take out things as needed apart from any fridge or freezer stuff. I do have a space for the bags though and I never do a big shop so it's just one bag not fully emptied for a day or so.

Pretty sure I have ADHD and a lot of things are things I've developed because of that. I used to do things differently. Where I live now has a much smaller kitchen and I have accumulated more kitchen stuff so putting everything away means stacking things up, the little plates on the big ones and so on. Though I've always said the ideal thing would be 2 dishwashers. You can get a two separate independent drawers type.

midlifeattheoasis · 13/08/2024 21:29

They don't make sense and you are being lazy

LoremIpsumCici · 13/08/2024 21:31

Lazy and inefficient.

BuccoA · 13/08/2024 21:33

This just all sounds like a grubby scruffy house to me.

What about flies in the hot weather? Are you rinsing everything well before you put it in the dishwasher? Do you empty your bins?

Milly16 · 13/08/2024 21:37

I'm with you. Except I bite the ends off the carrots rather than snapping them. Never thought of the dishwasher thing though - sounds like a great effort saving trick!

Diyextension · 13/08/2024 21:37

Anyone who thinks emptying a dishwasher or putting clothes away is “work “ is clearly a seriously lazy person 😴

Cantgetyououttamyhead · 13/08/2024 21:37

I don't have a dishwasher, or a spare room to dedicate to permanent clothes airers, and I cannot snap a raw carrot with my bare hands.

NewFriendlyLadybird · 13/08/2024 21:39

Do what you like. I don’t necessarily do those things (def not the dishwasher as it’s illogical — you’d have dirty and clean crockery in together) but they have no impact on anyone else so why discuss them?

ToplessWordle · 13/08/2024 21:40

OP, I'm far from being a domestic goddess but putting dirty things back into the dishwasher with clean stuff is grim even by my standards. Even if you keep things that have been in contact with raw meat seperate (which is good anyway!), surely things like bits of milk and cereal, coffee mixed with your saliva, blobs of butter and jam, little bits of cheese etc are inevitably going to fall onto the "clean" plates and potentially sit there for hours with bacteria multiplying, and then you take one out and use it! It doesn't sound very hygienic.

It's also terribly wasteful. You'll be using far more water and electricity than you need, running the dishwasher every day unnecessarily. Do you really not have anything better to do with your money than pay more than you need for your utilities?

Purplebunnie · 13/08/2024 21:40

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:20

I’m so surprised other people don’t do these things 🤦🏼‍♀️

Because even with three of us the dishwasher does not need to go on every day. What a waste of water and electricity. No wonder the planet is fucked

AtmosAtmos · 13/08/2024 21:41

The dishwasher does not make sense to me. As your child gets a big older and you start getting them to help I don’t think it would be safe. Children will not understand cross contamination.

The clothes thing i kind of get. Do you have a separate private space for the laundry? If not then doesn’t it get in the way?

Bumbleebeetree · 13/08/2024 21:41

Sounds really weird to me but you do you if it makes you happy.

Chickenwing2 · 13/08/2024 21:41

I live with only one other person and we still fill a dishwasher of dirty stuff most days. I work from home so anything used for breakfast, lunch and dinner will be there. If I'm cooking something with multiple pots or bowls used then the dishwasher fills up so easily. How can you have space for everything if there's clean stuff stored in there?

And yes I would find it hard to tell the difference between a dirty and clean plate as I rinse before putting them in the dishwasher and I have matching plates.

This isn't a hack- it's making things more difficult!

My work has 2 dishwashers one that's to be filled while the other is being cleaned. Works so well! But most houses don't have space for two dishwashers! If I haven't had time to empty the dishwasher in the morning we just put the dirty dishes in the sink until I get round to it.

DrinkElephants · 13/08/2024 21:42

It’s easier to chop and I don’t cook my carrots whole? I chop the ends off then chop them off.

The dishwasher thing sounds a bit gross as it sounds like you have a mix of clean and dirty in there. The dirty stuff would make the clean stuff dirty especially if there’s something dirty on the top shelf and clean on the bottom.

The washing of clothes thing wouldn’t work for families as it would take up a lot of space.
