To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

What?? 🤣🤣 I think I'm going to try this just to see what happens....

I just use Scan & Shop

Only goes in the bag once...

Milkand2sugarsplease · 13/08/2024 22:17

To be fair, if I lived alone, I'd probably use the clean throughout the day and then refill with dirty after tea.... just wouldn't work with a family of 4.

Washing is also never ending with a toddler in the mix so space on the maiden is in short supply so leaving it wouldn't work for me.

Veg - I'll generally have to chop something while cooking so it's just as easy to chop heads off carrots so don't really get that logic the way I can sort of get your thought process with the others.

melmos · 13/08/2024 22:20

@lalaloopyhead I actually can't stop laughing at this - the idea of dead pan emptying your Tesco trolley onto a conveyor belt, like the America garbage trucks empty their loads, in front of bemused shoppers and cashiers 👀

AugustAlready · 13/08/2024 22:21

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 13/08/2024 21:50

Where do the dry clothes go when you need to dry the next load of washing?

@GhoulWithADragonTattoo

she says she doesn't have many clothes, so I assume she's pretty much worn them all before she does the next load of washing.

@dellay

it wouldn't work for me. I wouldn't like the airer up all the time & I line dry outside most of the time...neighbours don't need to see my bare arse going outside for todays pants!! 😂

I don't have a dish washer, but what you do is why a lot of people have the two drawers or two dishwasher. I'd prefer to just empty it so I could more easily just shove things in during the day, I couldn't be bothered with the faff of checking what's clean & what's not, plus moving things around to make clean & dirty sides.

Seaside3 · 13/08/2024 22:21

Maybe we could all just bite the tops off our raw carrots? Maybe chomp the carrots and spit into the pan?

Nanny0gg · 13/08/2024 22:23

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:32

@Apileofballyhoo thank you for making me feel less alone!!! It does make sense doesn’t it?!

Depends whether you like to look at dirty plates stacked on the sides

And unless you cook the same things every day you use different pots and utensils and they wouldn't all fit

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 13/08/2024 22:24

I don’t think I can say anything that hasn’t already been covered.

Mixing clean and dirty pots is bloody disgusting. Also different meals require different sizes of pots, pans & utensils, I couldn’t fit every kitchen item I own in a dishwasher for it to live in there, this also means you are repeatedly and un-nessisarily re-washing items that may not have even been used depending on the meal. Not much would put me off food / eating at peoples houses but knowing you do this I’d avoid eating at yours like the plague!

I agree with others, if you can snap the very ends of the thick end of a carrot they should probably have been binned weeks ago. Diced carrots will cook a lot quicker than cooking a whole large carrot thus saving energy.

The clothes thing baffles me in that 2 airers would not hold all the washing owned so you’d have to remove and put some away at least to dry the next load but if all your stuff fits theres no real issue I guess but it is pretty lazy.

Gross. Odd that you would think that’s at all comparable to what OP has described.

mikado1 · 13/08/2024 22:27

Pp tips her basket out, not her trolley 😂

MintyNew · 13/08/2024 22:29

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:17

I don’t get why people are confused about the dishwasher… it’s ran every evening after dinner so dirty is only next to clean for a matter of hours? So what?

Sorry op that is just dirty and lazy. There's no logic to that.

Seaside3 · 13/08/2024 22:29

@RawBloomers it's time saving? And we'll, if its just going back into your mouth, why not?

ForGreyKoala · 13/08/2024 22:30

Vegetables, especially carrots, cook faster if they are sliced or chopped, and if you can snap off the end of a carrot it can't be fresh. I don't have a dishwasher, but if I did I would still put everything away. Putting clothes away takes seconds, and I have far too many to keep them all on a clothes airer anyway. I'm no domestic godess, but I couldn't live like this.

AugustAlready · 13/08/2024 22:32

heymammy · 13/08/2024 21:23

I don't do any of your examples op but I do get weird looks in the supermarket when, instead of taking each item out of my basket and placing it on the conveyor belt, I just gently (and carefully) tip the basket contents onto the belt all at once.

@heymammy

that would be interesting with a trolley instead!!😂😂

RawBloomers · 13/08/2024 22:32

@Seaside3 OP has told us that she snaps the ends off because they can be grotty - they aren’t going back into her mouth.

Conniebygaslight · 13/08/2024 22:34

I think you’re onto something…good for you.
Typical Sunday lunch for us…big family table, veg etc served in the pans they’re cooked in, drained obvs. Keeps them warm and less washing up.
Keep doing what you’re doing

Seaside3 · 13/08/2024 22:21

If you are only cooking for yourself this has got to be the most efficient way by far...not sure what guests would think though 🤣

CharlotteLucas3 · 13/08/2024 22:38

If this is real, it’s far more work and mental effort to be faffing about looking for a clean plate. You’d need a system to prevent contamination and that sounds like work. What if you have to wash something that had raw chicken on it?

I always peel carrots now because I realised that the awful crunch that felt like my teeth breaking, was bits of sand embedded in the skin.

I must admit that I have eaten soup out of a small pan before 😞

dellay · 13/08/2024 22:38

The carrots are just snapped where they will snap, as close to the end as possible. It’s about a pound for a huge pack so hardly wasteful!

I am surprised so many people think these things are grim. I’m now wondering if my friends laughing about this means they actually think I’m grim behind closed doors. Kind of wish I hadn’t shared it now!!!

I'm a lazy bastard. An absolute slattern. But even I think mixing dirty/clean in the dishwasher is a step too far.
as for just leaving your clothes hanging about? I, at least, take mine into my room.

Friendofdennis · 13/08/2024 22:40

Yes I roast carrots whole and slice them when they have cooked Never iron clothes

You are alright, OP. You are unconventional. Most of the commenters aren't. It doesn't matter.

SayYesToChocolate · 13/08/2024 22:45

With vegetables I don’t chop. I buy pre-pack chopped veggies (and salads too). I have a toddler so it is not easy to take too much time to prepare.

With dishwasher definitely empty it after a wash.

With clothes, do the whole thing, wash, either dryer or dry on the line and put away.

I like to read how others go about their chores. I might pick up a few tips to make housework more efficient (it is tedious).
