To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

Ugh, weird, lazy and really quite mucky, not in a good way.

Ohiwish12 · 13/08/2024 20:51

I sort of do the dishwasher thing in the morning especially when rushing around, in that rather than get a clean mug/bowl out the cupboard I'll get it from dishwasher. But I wouldn't mix dirty with clean. The dirty stuff goes to the side. Then at some point, i will empty rest of dishwasher and reload it with dirty and when it's full goes on. If your always adding dirty to clean and putting it on every night you may be wasting energy bills as dishwasher might not be full and need putting on if you emptied the clean stuff?

My DH lives out the piles of clean clothes. Drives me mad but it works for him. I like to put mine away so I can find stuff easily. What's annoying is when you run out of washing baskets because they are still full of clean clothes that haven't been put away!

I’m so surprised other people don’t do these things 🤦🏼‍♀️

Most people aren't this minging!!

Isn’t using the dishwasher every day pretty normal?

For big households maybe, for two of us definitely not.

GalileoHumpkins · 13/08/2024 20:52

I'm about to make a stir fry, I really can't be bothered to get a knife out so I'm just going to rip everything apart with my bare hands. Should be ok, right?!

Jhun · 13/08/2024 20:54

In an ideal world people like us would have 2 dishwashers one for cleans the other for dirties!

fliptopbin · 13/08/2024 20:55

How in hell do you snap the top off a carrot? Either you use really old bendy ones or you have the hand strength of an olympian (in carrot snapping).

Allfur · 13/08/2024 20:56

Double dishwasher drawers are a good idea

Isn’t using the dishwasher every day pretty normal?

There’s four people in my house and it goes on every other day/ every three days.

Dishes/pans etc are scraped off and dunked in water and then put in. Once it’s full, it goes on. Once it’s dry, it’s emptied

Grammarnut · 13/08/2024 21:01

Singleandproud · 13/08/2024 19:16

Don't your carrots take ages to cook, do you not slice them at all? And don't you lose several cm of carrot by snapping?

I do use kitchen scissors to cut a lot of things which is (for me) quicker than a knife. I also cut frozen pizzas up before I cook them.

Edited

The frozen pizza thing is a good idea!

goodkidsmaadhouse · 13/08/2024 21:01

You must waste so much of the carrot if you break the end off?! With a knife I can cut just the very tip. If I snap it there’s a good few cm coming off.

The dishwasher thing feels a bit disgusting to me. Clothes make sense.

I think the root of the matter is that the OP is the only adult in the house with nobody to share OR judge the housekeeping.
TBF if I’m alone for a few days I enjoy dropping standards, ignoring the mounting pile of dry clothes and doing the minimum meal prep.
But when the fam comes back it’s better for everyone if the house is running in a logical manner.

Problem is though that a 3 year old grows into a teen or young adult who has to live alongside other people who may not appreciate having dirty dishes flung on top of ‘clean’ ones. Carrots and clothes I wouldn’t get excited about but imagine a student or young professional house share with somebody who didn’t know how to empty a dishwasher and just chucked their dirty stuff back in? 😬

countrysidelife2024 · 13/08/2024 21:04

im with you on everything except dishwasher... wont lie, thats gross thats like keeping toothbrushes next to a toilet bowl

FOJN · 13/08/2024 21:04

I'm all for working smart not harder but you sound like you have quite a slapdash approach to life, as if nothing is worth a little bit of effort.

I couldn't live like that and I wouldn't usually judge but you are asking.

fliptopbin · 13/08/2024 21:04

Fiorentina9 · 13/08/2024 20:05

I wouldn't like say a cup that had beaten egg in it even in the dw with clean plates, even if not touching

I think that's just a bit silly. I'm pretty sure salmonella isn't airborne.

I do think in the West our obsession with cleanliness and aesthetics has gone too far, so I personally find people like you refreshing, OP.

I have to say, any time I even touch an egg, I have to bleach the whole kitchen, and every door handle, light switch and the bannisters, so I sympathise

Longchampsachomp · 13/08/2024 21:05

I don't think I'm understanding the dishwasher part. I also run my dishwasher each day but don't need most of the clean dishes immediately - so for example a clean pan would sit near our dirty breakfast and lunch plates all day and then I'd use the pan in the evening? And a dirty spoon goes back next to the clean ones?

I also couldn't snap ends of a carrot if I tried. And they take forever anyway even cut up small so a whole one would take bloody hours surely?!

As for the clothes...again similar issue to dishwasher. Where would I hang my clean load if most of the last load is still on the dryer?

We have a 3 person house (1 is out at work all day so mainly 2 just at home) and those systems just wouldn't work for us.

I do hate unloading the dishwasher however so sometimes just stack the dirty dishes by the sink until I'm ready to unload and reload!

DeclansAFeckingDream · 13/08/2024 21:05

Mixing clean and dirty dishes in the dishwasher, then using the clean stuff is pretty boggin really.

tulippa · 13/08/2024 21:08

Do you not peel your carrots? Wouldn't you just chop them at the same time?

The dishwasher thing would do my head in. Can only see that working if you always use exactly the same glassware, crockery and cutlery every day.

LonelyInDville · 13/08/2024 21:09

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:17

I don’t get why people are confused about the dishwasher… it’s ran every evening after dinner so dirty is only next to clean for a matter of hours? So what?

Sorry this is gross to me. how are the utensils stored? I only have one holder for them so they would touch and that's just nasty.

bonzaitree · 13/08/2024 21:10

Do the dirty dishes from the “upstairs” dishwasher drip onto the clean downstairs dishwasher?

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 13/08/2024 21:10

You chop vegetables so they cook evenly and their flavour infuses the rest of the dish. Why would anyone want a giant soggy carrot in the middle of their plate.

If you have space I don't see any reason not to do the clothes thing. I do tend to prioritise good food over housecleaning though.

Longchampsachomp · 13/08/2024 21:11

Also, forgot to ask, what happens if the clean dishes aren't all used - do they get washed again even though they're clean?

yourfavoriteweapon · 13/08/2024 21:12

We run the dishwasher every day. It gets emptied and reloaded after dinner. Until then, we just lift things out as we need them and stack dirty plates by the sink.

But it still needs emptying every day as we use a different selection of plates/mugs/glasses/pans each day. If I didn’t empty the clean stuff then I wouldn’t be able to fit the dirty stuff in… and it seems wasteful to run a dishwasher that’s only half full of dirty things because you’re too lazy to empty the clean things…

Snapping carrots also makes no sense because of the waste. It’s impossible to snap the 2cm end off that I would chop off.

I also do washloads through the week and put the dried washing into washing baskets, then put them all away together on a Saturday so sometimes the washing sits in the basket for a few days so I don’t have to put away every day.

Isn’t using the dishwasher every day pretty normal?

Not for a single person with a small child, I don't think so. I am currently alone in my house as the rest of the family are away at grand parents'. I have 1 saucer, two cups, a pan, air fryer tray and a dinner plate in my sink as we speak. It would probably take me a week to fill up a dishwasher.

ramsayboltonshounds · 13/08/2024 21:14

OP whatever makes your life easier! I do keep my kitchen ship shape cos I just do and though Iv got a dishwasher I rarely use it, I prefer washing pots and pans by hand - I also take pleasure in cooking so chopping is part and parcel of that! However, there are loads of stuff that Mumsnetters seem to think should occur in households or else we'll all die of Cholera which I don't do and have never been poorly! I also don't iron anything after washing and drying it, it gets put away and ironed when I want it!
