To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

I’m all for saving effort on jobs you don’t enjoy but this all sounds like more effort than doing things normally- snapping carrots like Geoff Capes tearing up the Yellow Pages then having to boil whole carrots, managing the dishwasher so clean things don’t get dirty then washing the lot every night, finding your clothes on the airer rather than the wardrobe. I suspect you’re spending more time being “lazy” than you would just being a bit more organised.

MrsWolf39 · 13/08/2024 20:30

Did you know you can get pre-chopped carrots? Even less effort, and yes they’re more expensive than whole ones but you’ll be saving money on the reduced cooking time so would probably balance out. Then you wouldn’t have to chop them at all.

Im lazy, I don’t ever make the bed, don’t own an iron, only put things away from the airer when I need space for the next load of washing. I’d love 2 dishwashers so I could do your system but keep them separated, doing it with 1 is too far even for me. I’d also worry that when your kid is old enough to be putting in/removing stuff from the dishwasher they’ll be much more likely to make a mistake about what’s clean and what’s not.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 13/08/2024 20:31

My dishwasher only has to go on 2/3 times a week. Clean stuff wouldn’t stay clean if I kept putting dirty things in.
And the wardrobe is to help keep the bedrooms tidy. Spare bedroom wouldn’t look very welcoming with my knickers hanging on an airer.

But if they work for you 👍

Lightdarkshade · 13/08/2024 20:33

I do this sort of thing. I don't like cupboards. I don't believe in emptying dishwashers. They are just a wet cupboard to me.
that said, I've a diagnosis of ADHD.

Bluescapes9 · 13/08/2024 20:34

I'm all for cutting corners where appropriate. As far a the dishwasher is concerned OP do you really place used greasy cutlery in beside clean cutlery. The very thought 😩

Amuseaboosh · 13/08/2024 20:35

Breaking the end of veg would inevitably take too much of the veg itself.

Clean/dirty dishwasher is a NO.

Clothes, whatever works for you. As a family of 5, sometimes 7, this would not work for us.

Seaside3 · 13/08/2024 20:37

Actual hacks...
A well laid out kitchen will have the crockery and most used pots and pans in the drawers/cupboards closest to dishwasher. Takes 2 minutes to unload, 3 max. No worrying about criss contamination, friends accidentally pulling filthy stuff outof dishwasher, no brain space wasted on working put what is clean or dirty.

Hang wet clothes on hangers. When dry take straight to cupboard and hang in there.

Wash, don't peel carrots. Use sharp knives.

Piglet89 · 13/08/2024 20:37

I am fastidious (think keeping dishwasher fully topped up with rinse aid and salt). For instance, it annoys me when iPhone charger cables get grubby, so I clean them with antibacterial gel on a cotton pad. That’s extreme, I grant you.

Your “methods” would drive me fucking crazy and if I lived with you and you did them, I would smother you. No harm done tho, as we don’t live together.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/08/2024 20:38

I like your style. I felt the same about the dishwasher, it's just a cupboard that cleans things, haha. But now mines broken so back to the fairy liquid and sink. 🙁
Clothes wise I wish I could get away with your method, but I've so many clothes and two other people in the house, so after three airers have been full for a week I'm forced to take action!
Ironing is definitely for mugs though.

5128gap · 13/08/2024 20:38

I can't snap carrots but would if I could.
The dishwasher thing would mean I'd have clean and dirty in there at the same time and there'd be drips. Also I tend to need all of it for my dirty stuff.
My spare room is on another floor so it would be a right faff to traipse up and down to get clothes off the airer.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 13/08/2024 20:38

No, just no to the dishwasher and the clothes would drive me mad.

Goldbar · 13/08/2024 20:39

Clothes thing makes sense to me. We have a big hamper that all the clean laundry gets shoved into and I tend just to pick out what we need for the day, rather than folding it and putting it away in drawers. I fold it all maybe once a month so that items we're no longer using (summer clothes in winter and winter stuff in summer, or things that are too small, for example) get returned to the right place, but otherwise it's such a time saving not to fold and put away and then have to get out again.

LBFseBrom · 13/08/2024 20:39

You sound just right, dellay , a girl after my own heart.

Sgtmajormummy · 13/08/2024 20:42

I think the root of the matter is that the OP is the only adult in the house with nobody to share OR judge the housekeeping.
TBF if I’m alone for a few days I enjoy dropping standards, ignoring the mounting pile of dry clothes and doing the minimum meal prep.
But when the fam comes back it’s better for everyone if the house is running in a logical manner.

Sparkletastic · 13/08/2024 20:42

Lazy, unhygienic and inefficient. But each to their own.

LondonFox · 13/08/2024 20:42

Fiorentina9 · 13/08/2024 20:05

I wouldn't like say a cup that had beaten egg in it even in the dw with clean plates, even if not touching

I think that's just a bit silly. I'm pretty sure salmonella isn't airborne.

I do think in the West our obsession with cleanliness and aesthetics has gone too far, so I personally find people like you refreshing, OP.

It is really not obsession with cleanliness if you don't mix dirty and clean dishes.
Dirty dishes are just yuck and do spread bacteria.

And putting away clean clothes is not "aestethetics". It is a reasonable way not to have crowded house with family amount of washing thrown over seven dryers. It is stopping your clothes smell like a mixture of whatever you are cooking in the last several days as most families do not have extra two rooms to use as separate bizarre dryer/wardrobe combo.

And in the end, it is just nice to know that you deserve better. That your family is worth more.
That extra second to chop off vege nicelly and aprechiate food you have..
That five minutes to empty a dishwasher and be happy you live in a place where water and electricity are so easily available.
That ten minutes it takes you to fold away clothes that keeps you warm and makes you look good.
Life is too short to rush through it.

How can a household of two fill a dishwasher every night

Greenbananasoup · 13/08/2024 20:44

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 13/08/2024 19:39

Tbh it just makes you sound a bit like a lazy slob who's trying to justify their laziness.

Also, using the dishwasher every day? So unnecessary. You wouldn't have to use it every day if you were less lazy...

Isn’t using the dishwasher every day pretty normal?

Allfur · 13/08/2024 20:45

Yes!

Allfur · 13/08/2024 20:45

No!

It is in this house.

DiscoBeat · 13/08/2024 20:48

I wouldn't get on with the dishwasher method. we put dirty cups in as soon as they're finished with so if it had some clean things in then you'd have to leave it on the side (I don't like that!) Also how do other members of the family know if it's clean or dirty?
The airers thing would be fine for me in the laundry room but again I wouldn't like to see them up in a bedroom longer than necessary.

MilkyCappuchino · 13/08/2024 20:48

well. as long you are clean to your own standard and wear clean underwear and eat clean food ( do you peel the carrots at all?) and have good health from the way you clean your dishes, you are fine

DiscoBeat · 13/08/2024 20:49

Also how do you just snap off the sprouting end of the carrot? They must want to snap in the middle, surely.
I do this with asparagus though!

Dreamskies · 13/08/2024 20:50

It’s definitely not always possible to snap the end off a carrot (I.e thick ones) and you’d waste far more of the carrot than necessary. I don’t see this as time saving over using a knife to chop the ends off…. And what about peeling them?! I don’t like domestic chores, but I peel my carrots and it’s a bit grim not to imo.

Surely if you’re wanting to be THAT lazy about it you’d just do nothing, cook the carrots whole and then just avoid eating the ends once served up?! That’s even easier.

I’m not a huge fan of emptying the dishwasher, but when I do it it literally takes five mins. I wouldn’t want dirty dishes dripping all over the clean ones, and how the hell do you chuckle dirty cutlery back in without affecting the clean stuff? Most dishwashers have a basket for cutlery….

I hate having my clothes out, but I do often fail to get them away in a timely manner. So yes, I suppose I do that, but I don’t like that I do it. It makes me feel lazy and inadequate.
