To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

I don't get the carrot stuff - Don't you peel carrots anyway? So what's the effort of trimming the end when you're already peeling them?

Dishwasher I can understand, emptying it is the reason why I don't like dishwashers, this is so tedious. However, I wouldn't like to mix clean and dirty, feels a bit weird.

Clothes mmmnope, I put as much clothing items on hangers as possible but it goes straight into the wardrobe where it's hidden, really don't like when clothes are on display in my bedroom, I need a very minimal environment to sleep properly.

Fiorentina9 · 13/08/2024 20:02

It does all make sense. Sounds like you've just optimised your life in a way that works for you. I wouldn't do this, but I think it's more tolerable than people who just like to make extra work for themselves because they have nothing more interesting to do with their free time, so they just spend their whole life cleaning. The kind of people who iron baby clothes.

TheKeatingFive · 13/08/2024 20:03

I have two dishwashers, so there's always a clean one and a dirty one. I struggle to see how it would work with one.

Futurascope · 13/08/2024 20:03

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:17

I don’t get why people are confused about the dishwasher… it’s ran every evening after dinner so dirty is only next to clean for a matter of hours? So what?

So the dirty stuff drips on the clean and you rewash any clean that hasn’t been used?

Heronwatcher · 13/08/2024 20:03

Sounds like more of a faff to me!

Who wants to scrutinise the dishwasher each day to work out which side is dirty/ clean, so you don’t end up dripping weetabix milk over clean pans?

Who wants to eat a carrot which looks like a horse has been at it- plus a whole carrot probably takes about 3 times longer to cook than if it’s in slices/ batons- and you’ve probably wasted a load of the carrot by not just slicing the end off.

The clothes thing- I cannot tell you how many attracted would need (family of 6) and how much damp this would cause if we never used wardrobes, plus in the summer we use an outside line so it would get rained on most weeks after a day or so.

Hold the book deal OP!

I do this with my sports clothes as there's always some just dried and I need them daily/every second day so I just grab them from the clothes horse.

Foe the rest tho I don't think you're actually saving yourself anytime or energy. DW is done in the time of a song on the radio. I wouldn't like say a cup that had beaten egg in it even in the dw with clean plates, even if not touching, and I am far far from particularly house proud. The veg thing is saving you nothing but adding to your energy bill.

To answer your is it unusual question, I would say yes, very.

I think that's just a bit silly. I'm pretty sure salmonella isn't airborne.

I do think in the West our obsession with cleanliness and aesthetics has gone too far, so I personally find people like you refreshing, OP.

Dibbydoos · 13/08/2024 20:05

The only thing I found a bit hmm was the dishwasher, so you have clean and dirty in there at the same time? I hope not....

Otherwise, YANBU - You have the room for clothes - I wish I did! - snapping veg is perfectly fine, I do that sometimes if I want to eat a chunk of cucumber, for example. I'm obvs not skilled enough to do it with carrots cos I cant seem to snap off the very end (pls peel carrots cos I don't know that the issue with pesticides in the skin has gone away).

Washing the shower cubicle is one of my issues - I give it a spray with no rinse stuff. The next time I use it I do rinse everything down then get in! I will give the hose and spray head a clean when I'm showering too 🤣🤣🤣. I've no mould or pink bacteria so it works....

SoOriginal · 13/08/2024 20:08

These things don’t sound much like life hacks, it sounds like you have a clothes horse out all the time and dirty cutlery spooning the clean stuff! Not my cup of tea personally but I like a tidy house and to know my dishes are definitely clean. Not for me.

SoOriginal · 13/08/2024 20:10

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:24

@Makingchocolatecake oh I see, I keep the dirty ones on one side and the clean on the other and just work through it for each meal (as and when in the house)

This genuinely sounds like harder work and more headspace than the 2 minutes it would take to de-stack.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 13/08/2024 20:10

So what if you use your big saucepan for dinner on the first night, dry the dishwasher off in the evening, it's clean in the dishwasher the next morning, you make scrambled eggs for breakfast, you put the dirty raw egg bowl in the dishwasher, egg drips on the clean saucepan. You want to use that saucepan when it comes to dinner time but it's got raw egg on it?!
This is really not hygienic. It takes a few minutes to unload a dishwasher in the morning, then you can put the dirty stuff in there throughout the day and set it off again at night.

Carrots you do you, I'd waste a lot of carrot and don't you ever use them in dishes rather than just whole boiled carrots?

Drying rack, I wouldn't because I don't like clutter but if it's just you and your dc and you don't mind looking at it no harm no foul.

Arrivapercy · 13/08/2024 20:13
  1. It takes ages to boil an unchopped carrot. Its a waste of energy and with a whole one you can get soft outer & a hard core which I don't like. You are cutting either way to eat it and its more energy efficient to cut it before cooking.
  1. I do not always need to run the dishwasher. I do not want to run it for only 4 dirty mugs & 3 small plates and everything else clean. Its very wasteful of water and resource. Its also unpleasant on a hot day leaving smelly plates & pans next to clean things.
  1. I have far more clothes than will fit on one airer and wear very different things on different weeks. A smart outfit would be sat there taking space for weeks. It does not make for efficient management of space or energy usage in managing how you run the washing machine or drier.

These tasks take almost no time.

LittleLantern123 · 13/08/2024 20:14

I couldn't live like that but each to their own I guess.

LoneHydrangea · 13/08/2024 20:15

So you’re putting in mugs and glasses into the dishwasher which are presumably dripping onto clean stuff below? It takes less than 5 minutes to empty the dishwasher. And I say that as an extremely lazy person.

CountessWindyBottom · 13/08/2024 20:16

I by no means spend my life cleaning, and thankfully can afford a cleaner, but I love to cook and obviously do lots of day to day jobs. But you are wasting time and energy by using these 'hacks'.

Once you have washed and peeled a carrot (please say you do this) then it takes seconds to slice and you are then saving a significant amount of time to steam or roast or boil because you have cut it. I find the dishwasher thing quite ick to be honest. It's an enclosed space so you could have milk from a porridge bowl in there dripping and congealing along with plates and cutlery you're going to use. And the clothes horse thing must be mentally exhausting. It's nice to put away fresh and clean clothes and they have a better chance of keeping that lovely fresh smell rather than just be left within the home until the next wear. In saying that, if these things make you happy or that you feel make life easier for you then carry on!

Iamthemoom · 13/08/2024 20:16

Do you not peel your carrots either? You just snap the tops off and boil them whole?!! Do you cook for other people? Don't they care about presentation? Don't you?

Sorry OP, I think all of these are gross and lazy and just show no self respect!

Sorenlorrenson · 13/08/2024 20:17

I think putting dirty plates I with the clean is grim af.
Do you peel your carrots ? If you don't care how things look I suppose making things look nice is a waste of time. Like leaving the laundry all over the place.

That's reassuring, it's not something I've thought through rationally tbh. Just if I stick to eggs cup or a chopping board after raw meat in the dishwasher, I will say don't take anything out, just in case, my dc would sometimes take out a favourite spoon lol to rinse and use.

Strictlymad · 13/08/2024 20:18

But some days I use a baking tray, others a casserole pot, others a lasagne dish, a different array of utensils. My whole kitchen won’t fit in the dishwasher so I need to empty it to fit todays used items

DeccaM · 13/08/2024 20:19

Do it your way if it works for you, obviously. But it definitely wouldn't work for me. The dishwasher thing just sounds disgusting. And it hardly takes any time to chop the end off a carrot. It's not exactly time-saving to avoid using a knife. I also wouldn't keep clothes on an airer. I like to put everything in its allocated place, either hanging up or in drawers.

In terms of putting things away, I guess it depends on whether you like things to be orderly. There's no moral superiority either way, it's just a personal preference (with the exception of the dishwasher routine which sounds unhygienic to me). I also make the bed every morning. What's your stance on that?

mikado1 · 13/08/2024 20:19

I would imagine OP definitely does not peel carrots!

Many don't tbf, quick scrub and use. I do this, organic if relevant!

Wexone · 13/08/2024 20:19

but what are you saving ? the one thing I love about a dishwasher is how quick yoi can tidy after dinner. you just chuck it all in and put it on. why on earth do you leave dishes stacked dirty on the side to put them in later ? juts empty the clean ones and put them away it takes like 5 bloody mins. like what do yoi do on days you are not at home or eaten out and don't use as much Delph? or during the summer hot weather when it gets a but smelly ? I don't get what you are saving or how it's a life hack ?
carrots as people say take a lot longer to cook plus you are wasting carrots so again not the definition of a life hack
the clothes maybe but me couldn't deal with it. can't stand clothes horses etc laundrey is put away properly. p

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 13/08/2024 20:20

@dellay I don't think your friends find this 'hilarious' I think they were laughing in a WTF kind of way (and not a good way)

billybear · 13/08/2024 20:20

TheChosenTwo · 13/08/2024 20:22

These all sound like slovenly Viz top tips!
Fair enough if that’s how you want to live but I think you can see from this thread that most of us don’t.
Here’s another tip for you,

Do you manage to use everything in the dishwasher by the evening then or are you rewashing clean items every day? You said there’s other things you do? What are they?! I’m fascinated!
