To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

Are there children in the house watching this as an example?

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:28

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 13/08/2024 19:24

ok so what if you don't use a pot or pan again the next day - you wash them again even though they're clean?

@AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds yes they would just stay in there, no harm done!

@TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree a few minutes perhaps?!

It takes agggggeeessssss longer to cook a whole carrot vs chopping. I’ve tried it too many times.

Also agree with PP re wasting loads of the carrot when you snap the end off: lots more comes off than if you were to chop it.

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 13/08/2024 19:28

Interesting. I'm genuinely curious about your other household tasks. Any wisdom on changing bedding? Cleaning toilets?

(I wouldn't do dishes your way as sounds like a lot of faff checking whats clean, but I do dump all my cutlery in one drawer without spacers)

mothsandgoths · 13/08/2024 19:28

But seriously emptying a dishwasher takes max three min. Seems silly to not just do it

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 13/08/2024 19:28

sorry OP but i think that's batshit Grin

just put the clean pans away and give yourself more room

I don’t get why people are confused about the dishwasher… it’s ran every evening after dinner so dirty is only next to clean for a matter of hours? So what?

Because if you put in your porridge bowl at breakfast time, it drips milk onto the clean casserole you were going to make dinner in, and your used coffee cup dribbles coffee onto your clean dinner plates?

I concur with a pp — isn’t it very hard to snap the fatter end of a fresh carrot?

Apileofballyhoo · 13/08/2024 19:30

I do the dishwasher thing but I just stack used stuff up on the side until everything is used after dinner and then it all goes back in. Exceptions are if I've baked or made an elaborate meal, that stuff that isn't used daily has to get put away or there won't be room in the dishwasher. Only 3 of us living here so it's pretty much the same 3 mugs, 3 bowls, 3 saucepans/pots, 3 dinner plates everyday. Often don't put clothes away either, I do both things where we wear some straight off the airer and some get put away. I hang my good clothes. Snap broccoli florets off sometimes, and I've done the carrot thing. I rarely chop, usually slice things straight into the pan/pot or onto the plate.

I think it's largely because there are only the 3 of us. And laziness of course. Or efficiency.

ReadWithScepticism · 13/08/2024 19:30

What about things you only use every so often like the extra big saucepan, the fancy serving plate, the potato masher or whatever? Do they stay in the dishwasher being washed over and over, until you next need them?

This sounds like the killer point. Unless you cook the same meal every day, with the same implements, because 'why make more work' for yourself by varying the menu.

Scandiviews1 · 13/08/2024 19:30

I mean, I like your style OP and I wish I could do it your way. Apart from the carrots, as I can't see how you can snap the end off them unless you have fingers like pliers.

Q124 · 13/08/2024 19:31

I'm praying you're not a friend of mine and been feeding me!

Flammekuche · 13/08/2024 19:31

OnLockdown · 13/08/2024 19:26

I just tried to snap the fat end off a carrot and wasted half the carrot because it would only snap lower down.

Do you use the exact same dishes everyday or do you end up rewashing clean ones that haven't been taken out of the dishwasher.

I sometimes wear clothes straight off the airer but usually I have to put stuff away to put the next load on it to dry.

I love that you tried this. I admit I was also tempted, but I’m just home from holidays and can’t be bothered…😀

@Apileofballyhoo thank you for making me feel less alone!!! It does make sense doesn’t it?!

This has got to be a reverse ......

Messen · 13/08/2024 19:33

Op I hear ya, For smaller households with fewer pots and pans, and clothes, plus limited time and storage space in particular, the dishwasher and dryer thing totally makes sense. It’s what we do as well. Why make work for yourself? Nothing wrong with minimal veg prep. If it works for you it works for you, go for it.

Starlingexpress · 13/08/2024 19:34

I’m scared to ask how you clean the toilet…

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:34

I did used to empty and put away the crockery and the clothes and then one day I literally just thought sod this, what a bloody waste of my time!! Putting things away for the sake of it basically.

It isn’t a reverse, I live alone with dd 3 and she certainly isn’t doing any jobs!

@TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree a few minutes perhaps?!

I reckon it takes longer than a few minutes. I really can't see the part that 'makes sense'. It takes you longer to cook them, uses more energy and you still chop them to eat them.

twojumps · 13/08/2024 19:38

It's called having standards!

You could apply your logic to anything if your standards can go that low.

Don't flush the toilet, do it once at the end of the day. I mean, really?

Be careful not to keep sliding into living with little care.

OakTree16 · 13/08/2024 19:38

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:25

@ReadWithScepticism yes just cook them whole! Why chop them up? You can do that on your plate?

but you’re still chopping them on your plate later so you’ve saved no time at all? Why not chop them beforehand and they will cook quicker? This is weird 🤣

@twojumps erm well that would be gross?

how is not flushing the toilet the same as not chopping a carrot for goodness sake?!

Tbh it just makes you sound a bit like a lazy slob who's trying to justify their laziness.

Also, using the dishwasher every day? So unnecessary. You wouldn't have to use it every day if you were less lazy...

Choccyp1g · 13/08/2024 19:41

Leaving pegs on the washing line saves a lot of time, but I think they wear out more quickly.
