To think these domestic things make sense and I’m not being lazy?

There are various things that I do at home that just make sense to me and I can’t understand on a domestic level why anyone would put themselves out further? This has come up in a conversation with friends who found it hilarious and ridiculous that I do this. I can see the funny side (sort of!) but surely others do this too?

Carrots… I just snap the ends off by hand and put them in the pan rather than chopping with a knife. Why use a knife when you can snap it off?! Same for other veg where it works.

The dishwasher… why empty and put in cupboards? With the exception of mugs, I never ever empty the dishwasher as I just take what is needed then when it’s dirty put it back ready for the next wash?

Clothes… hang them on the two clothes airers and never put them away. I don’t have loads of clothes so that probably helps but literally why put them away?! They are in the spare room perfectly accessible once dry.

There’s other things but this is the general idea. I just don’t get why you would make more work for yourself? Surely others do the same?!

Sounds fine to me OP.

The housework fetishists on MN should put down the Zoflora and pick up Betty Friedan.

Josette77 · 13/08/2024 22:46

How many dishes are you and your 3 yo using each day?

It's just me and my 13 yo and I put the dishwasher on every other day or third day.

Often I just do a quick hand wash of them instead of the dishwasher.

The carrot thing I find weird because I love to cook. I can't imagine just throwing whole carrots on the stove. It would take too long and harder to time with the other veg in there.

Lol I hardly think MN is neurotic because most people empty their dishwasher and put their clothes away.

@lalaloopyhead I actually can't stop laughing at this - the idea of dead pan emptying your Tesco trolley onto a conveyor belt, like the America garbage trucks empty their loads, in front of bemused shoppers and cashiers 👀

I'm howling at this...imagine the chaos 🤣

dellay · 13/08/2024 19:25

@ReadWithScepticism yes just cook them whole! Why chop them up? You can do that on your plate?

They cook faster if you cut them up and they fit better in the pan. It's more energy efficient.

mondaytosunday · 13/08/2024 22:55

Snap carrots - but they won't snap at the ends so don't you waste a lot? And you have to cut them up when you eat them so isn't it more efficient to chop a few together?
Dishwasher - so do you just pile the dirty dishes in the sink while waiting to use all the clean dishes out of the dishwasher?
Clothes - I have my machine upstairs so I too tend to hang stuff on the bannister (it's a washer/dryer) and grab from there. I would not do this if the machine was in the kitchen.

murasaki · 13/08/2024 23:01

@dellay , I'm afraid that you are a bit skanky. I wouldn't want to eat any of your food or off any of your plates. Grim.

Ruffpuff · 13/08/2024 23:01

My clothes live on the floor on in the tumble dryer. You’re welcome 🙂.

Well this thread seems to have got a lot of MNers pretty wound up.

@Apileofballyhoo surely you just end up with crumbs everywhere if you don't use a plate?

No, I don't know why. Must be the type of bread or something. If I have very crusty, crumbly bread I use a plate.

SilverPiscis · 13/08/2024 23:21

Please post a video of you snapping carrots' ends, it doesn't make sense...carrots don't snap at the ends. I have too see it to believe it

Franjipanl8r · 13/08/2024 23:28

I want to try your dishwasher trick but I want 2 dishwashers side by side so I don’t have to have dirty plates on show. I heard of someone who had 2 dishwashers and did this.

Just chop your carrots or stop eating them though, that’s odd.

Catza · 13/08/2024 23:33

dellay · 13/08/2024 22:38

The carrots are just snapped where they will snap, as close to the end as possible. It’s about a pound for a huge pack so hardly wasteful!

I am surprised so many people think these things are grim. I’m now wondering if my friends laughing about this means they actually think I’m grim behind closed doors. Kind of wish I hadn’t shared it now!!!

It may not be expensive but it is definitely wasteful,
i am quite intrigued because when I first read your post I thought you were one of those delightful older ladies who are wonderfully eccentric. Then I read you have a 3-year-old and I just can’t picture it…

PurpleFlower1983 · 13/08/2024 23:36

The clothes thing fair enough, no harm done! with two young kids we constantly have an airer up so I can see this would save time.

The carrot thing I personally find weird to be honest!

The dishwasher thing I find weird and unhygienic.

jen337 · 13/08/2024 23:36

You are weird. For the carrot thing it’s much easier to bite the ends off that’s what I do. Dishwasher your way is going to be a lottery when you pull out an item if it’s clean or dirty. I’ve solved this by having one of those catering dishwashers which basically kept running all the time so I can be sure the dishes in it are likely to be clean. Electric and water bills are a bit high though, I guess that’s just the price I pay for being a genius. Clothes I just chuck the dirty ones out, the space I save by not having a washing machine or dryer I use to keep up a good stockpile of new items.

JoyousPinkPeer · 13/08/2024 23:37

Do you live alone?

Dishwasher wouldn't work, hubby empties as soon as he's up.

Carrots, don't know how you do tgat with fresh carrots. Ours are usually cut into buttons.

Clothes drier. Put in ironing pile or away as soon as dry.

You are misunderstanding, she doesn't pile it up in the sink/on the side, she puts dirty in with the clean!! 🤣

100% they think it's grim and are laughing that you think it's normal behaviour!!

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 14/08/2024 00:14

Why do people have 2 dishwashers? Do they have no cupboards? Or is it just due to having a big family?

I don't get why you'd have one for clean and dirty either, the dishwashers must be alternated and have both clean and dirty dishes in them at some point.

Please will someone explain it to me like it is 'Why we have 2 dishwashers for dummies'.

Thanks in advance

Sweet Mary mother of Joseph the dirty and clean plates are mixed!!?? That is abhorrent!! Honestly I couldn’t eat somewhere if someone did this. I wouldn’t even want a cup of tea at your house OP. We couldn’t be friends.

heymammy · 13/08/2024 21:23

I don't do any of your examples op but I do get weird looks in the supermarket when, instead of taking each item out of my basket and placing it on the conveyor belt, I just gently (and carefully) tip the basket contents onto the belt all at once.

My dad does this, I have to restrain myself from rearranging it
Mine is heavy ambient stuff to lightest ambient then heavy frozen/fridge to lightest ambient frozen/fridge. So in order of packing that bread and salad ends up on top

My dad < tips entire basket so salad is under tins >
I nearly hyperventilate

blueshoes · 14/08/2024 00:29

OP, I am afraid you are a bit of a slob.

I suspect what you described is just the tip of the iceberg. I wouldn't want to live with someone like you.

Are you buying carrots the size of your little finger or what? A large carrot, whole, would take fucking ages to boil and snapping the ends off one would be harder work than just slicing with a knife.

The dishwasher thing - and I speak here as someone who generally gives very few fucks about housework and isn’t particularly hygiene conscious - is gross.

Clothes airer - I mean, do what you want, but I’d find it really depressing to be looking at laundry all the time and in any case I’ve got too many clothes for them all to live on an airer.

You are absolutely entitled to do what you want in your own house; it’s not affecting me so I can’t get worked up about it. It doesn‘t, however, ‘make sense’ and it absolutely is lazy - I don’t really get why you don’t just admit it and own it. I do/don’t do a lot of domestic stuff out of sheer laziness, but I don’t try to tell people my way makes more sense, and I’m more than happy to admit I’m lazy; I don’t see it as a moral failing so I don’t feel the need to dress it up as efficiency (or indeed make it my entire personality).

The only people I’ve ever met with two dishwashers are orthodox Jewish families who stick to exceptionally strict kosher rules about certain food groups never being allowed to contaminate each other. When we were househunting in our area we saw lots of properties with kitchens that had two sinks, two ovens, two fridges and two dishwashers. Unfortunately in a normal sized house that often meant an odd layout and/or the surprise presence of a washing machine in the living room or on a landing.
