The 90's one

it's immense, I've watched it a hundred times & it never gets old, the costumes even & i'm aware of the dodgy accents

I have to add some other faves too:

Blade - best opening scene ever, and so great to see Wesley in Deadpool last month looking as fine as ever.

Not strictly vampirical but the Russian films Nightwatch and Daywatch also excellent.

Whatineed · 13/08/2024 21:02

Oh and I really enjoyed the Netflix miniseries - Midnight Mass.

Scorchio84 · 13/08/2024 21:06

True Blood was amazing, I ended up donating my books to the library after what Charlaine Harris did to the glorious Eric (&this was even before the Alex) @needhelpwiththisplease

I love it too, it's so atmospheric and sexy and looks amazing.

I'm so excited to see the new Nosfetatu film next year!

Yes I saw the trailer for this when I went to see Mad Max. Looks excellent. I love a weirdo Skarsgaard brother or two. 😂😂😂

Also saw another on trailer that they've remade The Crow. Not sure how I feel about that one yet...

It's such a good film. I go to Whitby most years, always hope to catch Keanu at the Magpie Cafe. The Dracula Experience in Whitby is sooo bad it's fantastic.

Sort of off topic but not quite, I just found out today that China in your Hand by Tpau is was based on Mary Shelley's writing of Frankenstein. Love that song but had no clue what she was on about 🤣

Oooh good fact re. T’pau. It does make sense of the lyrics.

May09Bump · 13/08/2024 21:24

My list:
90's Dracula
Lost Boys
Interview with a vampire
Dusk till dawn
1st Blade movie - Wesley Snipes (abattoir dance scene was very well done).
Trueblood series was an interesting take on the subject.

Scorchio84 · 13/08/2024 21:31

Monica Belluci was (&still is) stunning

also Bill Skarsgård , my night is made!

Edit, I wasn't clear, he being in a new vampire film is music to my ears

I'm a huge Stoker fan but didn't like the film.

Fav vampire films:

Let the Right One In (original)
Night Watch
Interview with a Vampire
Lost Boys
A Girl Walks Home
30 Days of Night

What didn't you like about it? I thought it was really well done, the diary entries were even included

I love other peoples perspectives

For me it didn't really capture the book and the Mina-Dracula love story was made up. I couldn't stand the actors, although I thought Oldman was very good the rest weren't good. I especially couldn't stand the Lucy actress. I thought Reeves was awful; wooden with a terrible English accent.

The cinematography was good but I found the film nice to look at but vapid.

Another vote here for Let the Right One In - the Swedish version. Just a masterpiece, so atmospheric.

It's a brilliant film! Great choice.

I don't think you can beat the original 1931 Dracula film with Bela Lugosi in the title role.

Actually, I do adore this film too. It’s visually stunning, all that German expressionism. Love it. And of course the 1958 Dracula with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. I also have a soft spot for the 1966 follow up with Barbara Shelley.

And talking of sexy Draculas, a special shout-out for Richard Roxburgh in Van Helsing - 2004? He was hawt.

Aheadfullofwords · 13/08/2024 22:08

Not the film, but the book. The book is one of my favourite novels.
I personally think Interview with the Vampire, or The Lost Boys, are the best vamp films

TransformerZ · 13/08/2024 22:09

Lost Boys is the best English language vampire movie ever!

Thank you! I had totally forgotten about Daywatch and Nightwatch. I must hunt them down for a rewatch at once!

Yes, I really enjoyed that version

Why are Vampires / Draculas made to be good looking? Is there something in the history?

I was going to say basically this.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 13/08/2024 22:13

Also agree that the original Let The Right One In is brilliant. As is A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

I think because it’s not supposed to be just a violent act (turning someone into a vampire) - it’s almost like a seduction, and that the sired kind of wants it to happen - which is less creepy if the Dracula is sexy.

AdoraBell · 13/08/2024 22:40

I also saw on the big screen, it’s my favourite vampire film. I read the book after the film, it’s really good but not the love story it was hyped up to in the film promos.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 13/08/2024 22:43

Can I just add Only Lovers Left Alive?

I so want to be Tilda Swinton when I'm undead. So many books....and that dressing gown... swoon.....

Most cultures have some kind of vampire lore but it was John Polidori, who wrote the story The Vampyre, who created the vampire as we know him today.

The main character Lord Ruthven is based on Lord Byron who was aristocratic, good looking, charismatic and very promiscuous. The character was very popular in Victorian society and alongside Stoker's Dracula formed the idea we now have of the vampire.

The vampire appealed to the Victorians because it was a very sexual being during a time of sexual repression. It's very appealing to a woman because she is placed under a spell and not responsible for her seduction. The vampire also seduces men.
