To feel relieved and optimistic that we finally have a PM who knows something about something

So impressed to see the speed rioters are being dealt with. We have someone at the helm who knows something about the law. As opposed to the series of buffoons we have had in recent years who literally don't know how to pay for something in a petrol station, let alone how to manage a pandemic. And the worst of it was they were so thick they didn't even know that they didn't know.

I think Starmer knows what he knows, if you get my meaning -he has his areas of expertise, and will know when he needs to refer to someone else's area of expertise.

I feel more optimistic now than I have done for a very long time

I can’t stand Labour, they haven’t wasted any time in getting rid of the winter fuel allowance for pensioners. They disgust me.

You are easily disgusted. You must be incandescent with rage at the previous government.

You couldn’t be more incorrect. 😆

That’s where the line is drawn though. It has to be drawn somewhere, as is the same with all benefits. Pensioners get quite a lot whilst the young are left to suffer. I don’t wish ill on anyone and of course people deserve good retirements, but they have been handed a lot on a gold platter by the tories to secure their votes.

Some pensioners have very little and are barely able to make ends meet. ‘The Young’ have the option to work; pensioners, for the most part, don’t.

I’m not surprised the Labour government has done this, but it disgusts me. Am I allowed to say that or will it be deemed ‘hate speech’?

So you were happy with the last lot limiting widowed parents allowance? Happy that they take carers allowance off people's benefits and means test it if people are able to work and earn a bit of money? Happy that Cb is now means tested?

Carers of disabled children often have very little and don't have the option to work or work extra

Pensioners have had their whole lives to pay into a private pension, actually many of them did and have far more than most of us can expect in retirement even though we do the same jobs

Not everyone worked for the NHS or the police. Most private pensions were/are worth very little.

I’m not aware of any benefits for carers of disabled children being removed - which is a good thing, as it shouldn’t be a race to the bottom. But pensioners are the most vulnerable members of society and it would do this government good to remember that.

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 14/08/2024 22:13

Pensioners are also exempt from bedroom tax, 2/3/4 bed house as a single person or as an elderly couple? Yeah fine, no bedroom tax for you

Single person with 2 same sex children under 16 ? Bedroom tax for you! Even if you are working but still entitled to some HB

It isn’t. The way he has cracked sown on some protesters but not others is storing up problems for the future. I’ve never voted Tory but all this “Adults back in the room” nonsense is just that - nonsense. There is no difference in basic competence between Rishi and keir that I can see.

Two tier justice? Cutting through the online myths

Much has been written, tweeted and amplified about the English and Welsh criminal justice system’s response to the recent incidents of public disorder, very little of which is accurate. Below is a …

So you dont really know what you are talking about then?

Carers of disabled children are shafted every which way, I'd say those children and families are the most vulnerable in society

That exemption was only given when the bedroom tax was introduced, because there were real concerns that very elderly people forced to move house would die as a result. The government did not want new coverage of 96 year old blind Jean crying because she has to move out to an area where she knows no one and dying a week later.
A lot of elderly people as they age do need an extra bedroom for medical equipment and/or a carer to stay overnight. So while they might be fine at 67 in a studio flat, they may need to move to a bigger place at 80 so they have space for medical equipment.
But it was fears of bad PR that led to the exemption.
The reality in many places is the one bedroom flats are either expensive luxury flats, or student places. One bedroom flats cheap enough for housing benefit simply do not exist in many places.

I wouldn't bother, I work for the MOJ . Some people on here aren't interested in listening to it or interested in how the justice system works

As far as I’m aware, it’s not illegal to have an opinion. Yet.

We see things differently. That’s fine - we live in a democracy, or so we are told.

Well that's not true, and they were freeing up prison spaces before Labour got in

Sex offences and violent criminals are not being let out early

I agree OP. I don't expect perfection or to agree with a government 100%, but my overwhelming feeling about UK politics at the moment is relief, like I've woken from a dystopian nightmare.

Have a difference of opinion as much as you like but the whole I'm not aware of carers of disabled children losing benefits shows you don't know what you are talking about

And I think the fact you've come back with the comment about different opinions just seems to me like you don't actually give a shot about that vulnerable group

And single parents of young children really don't need the extra stress and anxiety of bedroom tax either

Edited to say I don't disagree with the elderly being exempt from bedroom tax , I disagree with bedroom tax . It caused hardship for an awful lot of people

Nadeed · 14/08/2024 22:38

@OnAndOnAndonAgain I do not support the bedroom tax. But the stress of moving to a smaller house is not going to kill someone in their thirties or forties.

@OnAndOnAndonAgain I do not support the bedroom tax. But the stress of moving to a smaller house is not going to kill someone in their thirties or forties.

And how are they going to do that? Where's the money coming from to move to somewhere smaller?

I doubt the majority of them would die either, if that was the case we wouldn't have so many people in nursing homes

And it doesn't help those people who are elderly and become unable to get upstairs and are sleeping in their living room when they could have been supported to move to smaller homes , we have loads of them in my area for over 65s

Because there no support for the elderly once they get to that point, it's left to the family where it would be better for a lot of elderly people if they were supported in moving somewhere that is better for their long term needs .

Obviously the government didn't care about that though, just interested in keeping votes

StoneofDestiny · 14/08/2024 22:53

We had have had 14 years of the Tories, their 5 Prime Ministers, 7 Chancellors, 8 Foreign Secretaries and 16 Housing Ministers and the ...em 'Minister for Common Sense.............just to end up with huge NHS waiting lists, Railway Chaos, expansion of Food Banks, increased austerity, inhumane and idiotic schemes like Rwanda and the ridiculously expensive and unnecessary HS2. Worse, the extensive use of dog whistle politics blaming migrants for everything! Too many of these PM's were inept and frankly dangerous, towards the end, the rhetoric was indistinguishable from Farage and Reform.

Thank you Keir for getting shut of them - now crack on grasping the nettles they sowed!
