To feel relieved and optimistic that we finally have a PM who knows something about something

So impressed to see the speed rioters are being dealt with. We have someone at the helm who knows something about the law. As opposed to the series of buffoons we have had in recent years who literally don't know how to pay for something in a petrol station, let alone how to manage a pandemic. And the worst of it was they were so thick they didn't even know that they didn't know.

I think Starmer knows what he knows, if you get my meaning -he has his areas of expertise, and will know when he needs to refer to someone else's area of expertise.

I feel more optimistic now than I have done for a very long time

Wonderful Kier. Wonderful Labour.

Letting prisoners out after serving just 40% of their time to replace them with kids & OAP's. All the while people who beat up policeman are home on bail.

Already caved in to Junior Doctors & train drivers. Anyone else fancy a big pay rise ??...just go out on strike & Labour will pay.

Small boat crossings haven't ceased & are running at the same rate as they were last year. Another success !!

But dont worry because when Labour are finally found out & "Sir" Kier leaves office you wont have to worry that he might struggle on retirement as he has his very own personalised tax exempt pension scheme.

What the hell are you chatting 🤣

Scenicgirl · 16/08/2024 06:01

It's one thing dealing with the rioters who have pleaded guilty but quite another when he is doing b-all to stop the boats and male migrants, now I would be impressed if he tackled that problem. It's not going to happen though, is it, labour are far too woke and terrified of offending the incoming people not born here.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 16/08/2024 06:13

How much about what?

Scenicgirl · 16/08/2024 06:14

Yeah get over yourself or go have some cheese since you tried to be clever with my user name. I’m 25 so please tell me what I’m going to get when I retire? Oh yeah. Jack shit because being retired probably won’t even be a thing.

I feel for you, it's a depressing thought.
I take it you are working and paying into a pension?

Except it isn't widespread concern about immigration that's set it off, is it? A small minority of the population who are always up for a fight because they enjoy the violence, have been manipulated like puppets by far right racists. The events of the last week are by no means a barometer of public opinion on immigration. If they were, given how hugely the rioters were outnumbered by counter protesters with placards saying migrants are welcome, you would be forced to conclude the public are very pro immigration indeed.

Only welcome if they are able to contribute to society and stop this crap about coming here to flee from danger 🙄 yeah right, so where are their families?

CurlewKate · 16/08/2024 06:21

It's always fun to press the "You can't say anything nowadays" people to explain what they want to say but feel they can't. The ones that don't just shuffle their feet and tell you that they're not going to google for you or that you should do your own research always want to say something like Merry Christmas. Strangely, they are never suitably grateful when you reassure them that they can....

Yes. And ive been paying tax since I was 18 (worked full time whilst at uni).

It's the "ya can't say nah'in deez days" crew. The irony of the double negative does not escape me.🙄

Others are ideologically biased towards global right wing politics..
Some are Tory supporting immigrants, with fanciful ideas of homeland.
Some, salaried workers who've never set foot in the UK.🤔

And some are pissed off Tory voters, struggling with the failure of their preferred party over 14 years. They'd rather see the UK burn than see it do well under Labour.🤨

This.

I'm going to start asking them what they want to post but can't

5 weeks in and the grapes are still so sour.

JoanOfMarch · 16/08/2024 09:00

I'm old so have lived through a lot of governments. The last Tory government were not conservative enough for me and deserved to be thrown out.

I am centre-right but voted for Tony Blair (1st time). I think my younger self was annoyed with a tired out Tory party at the time, but I did not vote Blair for a second term.

I grew up in a politically divided household. My father is left wing but my departed grandparents were right wing. My grandad always used to say the feckless, illegal and misfits of society will be looked after before you with a left wing government.

I don't think it is sour grapes with posters, certainly not from me. I have resigned myself to 5 years and do believe the younger generation need to experience different governments. It's alright us old timers telling them so, they need to live it themselves.

I do not relish the next 5 years. The unions are primed to cause chaos and demand unrealistic pay rises. The deterrents to the unwanted boats quashed and a 'come one, come all' forhorn klaxons heavy across the globe. Operation scatter in place. Winter is coming.

Nah, you're not convincing me. Do you agree with your late grandfather?

A Tory former minister has admitted that the strikes have cost the taxpayer more than the pay settlement for rail staff - people like to forget that part. I am old, I've lived under Tory and Labour governments and I sincerely hope that it will be 10 years or more before the Tories get in again.

Lastly, if you think this Labour government is left wing, you haven't been paying attention. They're centrist. It's just that the Tories have drifted so far right they're unrecognisable.

I’d imagine that’s true of all public sector strikes. Which is why some resistance to pay claims will always be necessary. Otherwise the threat of a strike would just open the door to ever more money.

Labour inherited the small boats and prison fiasco and have only been in government a few weeks. Unfortunately there isn't a magic wand, so it will take more than a few weeks to sort out the mess.

If the kids and OAPs didn't want to be charged, then they shouldn't have committed crimes. They were rushed through in order to deter further violence. Which I'm sure you already know.

You misunderstand the point. It's this: allowing strikes to continue for over 2 years has cost the public purse more than settling them would have done. A fair pay settlement would have cost less.

The rail strikes were also about more and other than just pay.

pointythings · 16/08/2024 10:05

@Biggaybear kids and OAPs who set hotels on fire with people inside and attacked emergency workers. In other words: violent criminals.

They're in jail because they pleaded guilty. They pleaded guilty because they were filmed in the act.

’Fair’ is what opening-bid pay claims are always described as by union negotiators.

Neither the junior doctors nor the rail workers got their opening bid. That's why the process is called 'negotiation '. And the previous government were the ones who stopped negotiating, making them responsible for the duration of the strikes.

Do you know how much locum and agency staff cost the NHS every year? Pay people properly, improve retention, save a fortune.

Then maybe all the rapists, murderers & drug dealers can all rushed through too....to deter other rapists, murderers & drug dealers.

Just waiting for Dominic Casciani to be standing outside many other criminal courts in the weeks to come reporting on the above cases.

That seems very unlikely. Labour are in for at least two terms. And if they can improve things along the way, good for them.

As for this ‘sour grapes’ crap, there are plenty of people who have voted Tory in the past, and will again, but who thought the last government should go. Governments get tired and governing parties get fractious. There’s a natural end to a party’s time in government, whichever party it is.

There’s something between amusing and absurd about the Labour cheerleading on here. The best bit was the Labour posters’ benefit bashing in support of cutting OAPs’ fuel payments. Even after Labour said what a terrible thing that would be just a few months before!

Tribalism, I guess.
