Due to fly to Spanish island tonight and the weather for at least half of the week looks shocking. Cloud, thunderstorms, wind, rain. I am gutted. We haven't been abroad for years and each week either side of ours looks glorious in terms of weather.

I'm now wondering if I should re pack as we literally just have beach wear, shorts and T-shirts. And wondering what will happen with the pool and beach days id hoped for. Two small dc who will be a nightmare to entertain in a hotel room. Please tell me your bad weather holidays and give me some hope it'll be ok!!!!!

Bad weather does not mean you should be stuck indoors. I went to Spain last year and the weather was cloudy with some storms here and there. We were still outdoors for most of the time.
Also, kids don't mind swimming in a pool when it is cloudy and rainy. I wouldn't deny them that. It is still pretty warm in Spain this time of year even if it rains.
Not to mention that what you see on the app is just a snapshot and, in all likelihood, you'll get 20 min rain a day and intermittent clouds but it will still show up as rain on the app.

pennycrayon88 · 12/08/2024 11:54

Really hope that's the case. I just don't know what to pack. Will they need waterproofs or will it be too hot and humid for that? I just hadn't expected rain and storms at all. The weather up until this point has been 30 degrees and solid sunshine.

Take a splash suit for each of the children. Light and easy to pack. Use them or not according to how you feel.

Movinghouseatlast · 12/08/2024 11:57

Yes. A week in Crete it rained in absolute torrents for the whole time. Its very hard to enjoy a beach holiday in those circumstances.

Often the weather forecast shows rain but its actually only for a part of the day, especially at this time of year.

BendingSpoons · 12/08/2024 12:00

I have been twice to Menorca in May half term and had lots of thunderstorms. Everyone said 'this is once in a lifetime weather' which I did roll my eyes at second time! Hopefully nearer the time the weather will be more 'condensed' and get the storms over with.

Last time we were away it generally rained heavily but with breaks. It was a bit annoying having to check the weather and pan around it but we did get in the pool/beach. I bought shortie wetsuits for the kids and they were great when it wasn't so warm. They stayed in the splash pool throughout the rain and grumbled when I made them get out because of a thunderstorm!

Edited to add - I used an umbrella and sometimes a thin jacket or longer dress, but it was still fairly warm.

pennycrayon88 · 12/08/2024 12:00

I've been looking at the hourly forecast and for at least two of the days it says rain pretty much all day. The other days it's just morning.

Incredibly difficult to enjoy a beach holiday in the rain I would have thought.

Is there indoor things at the hotel? Soft play? Indoor pool? Or any attractions close by that are mostly inside?
That's what we did when we had bad weather in France. Although the kids were happy to swim in the pool when it was cloudy (it was still hot) and go to the beach and the playground.
I agree pack puddle suits but it'll probably be too hot. Also our hotel had a kids disco every night which they loved and helped tire then out.

Spacecrispsnack · 12/08/2024 12:06

Which weather are you using? And where are you going? I just checked weather for Ibiza and it just looks like a 40% chance of showers one morning. Tbh they need all the rain they can get!

UncomfortableSilence · 12/08/2024 12:08

I've seen this too, we're off to Menorca on Friday and noticed the weather for the Islands this week. However, I have 4 weather apps on my phone, and they all say different things.

Hopefully like PPs said it will pass quickly. It's still going to be hot and a friend who is over there at the moment said it is very humid so hopefully it may clear that a bit.

But I agree it does feel rubbish when you have saved and booked a week and the weather doesn't play, we have had rain a few times in Spain in August as well as May and Easter so we know it's not an absolute guarantee of pure sun.

pennycrayon88 · 12/08/2024 12:10

It is Ibiza and we are going tonight. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all say rain and storms. Met office doesn't look too bad but BBC and local Spanish forecasts look rubbish.

Which island?

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 12/08/2024 12:14

Yes. A few years ago we flew somewhere and it was thunderstorms and rain the entire week. Halfway through the first week of a two week holiday we decided to fly back to the UK and then fly to a different country

Rained the entire second week too!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 12/08/2024 12:15

Scattered thunder Wednesday and Thursday and lovely otherwise.

It will be a short lived thing. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Deebee90 · 12/08/2024 12:19

Yep I went to Tenerife in May and it was cloudy , overcast and rained. Oh and cold. Bloody awful as we weren’t expecting so bought summer stuff. Pack warm clothes and stuff to keep you busy just in case . We bought books, games etc.

purplecorkheart · 12/08/2024 12:24

Yes, a good few years ago, really bad storms. Many power cuts. We found a secondhand bookshop the second day there and stocked up on a load of books and spent most of the time reading on our covered balcony.

Maybe pack a wear jumper/jeans and download films etc for kids if you do have to spend sometime in the hotel.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 12/08/2024 12:26

I normally use Accuweather app when it's not UK. It doesnt look as bad as you are suggesting, there is a risk of storms, but it doesn't look like constant rain over the period you are there, and it's also still very hot. It will be too hot for waterproofs, I'd just stick with normal beach wear but take an umbrella and shelter when the storm does arrive!

I've been abroad a fair few times when there has been a storm, it's normally short lived.

Ladybughoping · 12/08/2024 12:27

We went to Marrakesh, the literal desert, and they had torrential rain storms 😂 the locals were so thrilled as it had broken the draught but we had zero appropriate clothes or plans beyond leaving the pool. We ended up doing some amazing tours and napping in the room a lot, and whilst it wasn’t perfect, it was weirdly very relaxing! My youngest was happy to be on his tech though, if you have young kids I can imagine it being a nightmare!

Rummly · 12/08/2024 12:29

I went to the Canaries years ago and had such torrential rain that the guests in the hotel had to help out the staff to sweep away the water to stop the hotel getting flooded.

It was actually a very good holiday!

annieloulou · 12/08/2024 12:32

Went to Lanzarote in March, heatwave the week before, then a storm hit on our 2nd day, torrential rain, strong wind’s for the rest of the week until our last day! Even the markets were cancelled due to the high winds. There isn’t much to do on those islands if you don’t get decent weather, even walking around is a bit grim.

We had some nice evening meals out and did a lot of shopping .

Barleysugar86 · 12/08/2024 12:35

Yes- we had a very rainy break in the Netherlands at Easter- we still had a blast- two very wet days we found an indoor soft play and a Castle to visit. Other day we got rained on whilst taking out a self driving boat but it wasn't too cold thankfully- it was a bit miserable and a bit funny and we went to warm up with hot chocolates and pasta straight after. You can definitely still have fun- just look around for things to go as a back up if needed. Most rainy days weren't all day.

Crunchymum · 12/08/2024 12:35

Went to an island off the coast of Venezuela and it rained for 12 out of 14 days. And I mean torrential rain.

It wasn't the rainy season either.

Meant we had to cancel all our excursions (the main reason we went to this destination)

Awful, awful, awful.

We've also had shit weather everytime we've been to Majorca (we used to visit friends who lived there and now they've moved, I'd never go back. We visited in June / September mainly a few times over a few years and had crap weather! It got the point our friends were incredulous about the weather as the day before we came it was glorious and same as soon as we left!!)

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/08/2024 12:37

We've had a few which is why we now go on holiday to Egypt as the weather is guaranteed.

taxguru · 12/08/2024 12:40

Bad weather in sunny resorts tends not to be like in the UK. Here, we're usually in for bad weather all day, but in the Med or other "hot" places, the bad weather tends to pass pretty quickly and isn't usually baked in for the day like the UK. It's also not usually too cold, even in the middle of downpours, the underlying air temperature is usually quite mild/warm and as soon as the clouds pass and the sun comes out, it gets hot again pretty quickly. We've certainly continued to splash about in the hotel pool or in the sea during rain showers - you're wet anyway so it doesn't matter. Maybe not ideal if all you want to do is lay on the beach or by a pool! But you probably don't need thick clothing and coats - most people still wander around, go shopping, etc in light rain as it's still pretty warm.

MrsImtheProbleM · 12/08/2024 12:54

We went to Tenerife last year and it rained on and off one of the days randomly , we were at a water park when it started and we didn’t even notice at first was still hot. It was actually really nice experience and nothing like rain in the uk. The rain was warm and I was still walking around wearing my bikini and shorts. I think you will be fine as it’s august. Hope you enjoy your holiday!

It's storm Debby. It probably won't be as bad as the weather app is making it look so far though, I wouldn't be staying in a hotel room or packing Waterproofs. Just get in the pool and crack on! It'll still be warm.
