Due to fly to Spanish island tonight and the weather for at least half of the week looks shocking. Cloud, thunderstorms, wind, rain. I am gutted. We haven't been abroad for years and each week either side of ours looks glorious in terms of weather.

I'm now wondering if I should re pack as we literally just have beach wear, shorts and T-shirts. And wondering what will happen with the pool and beach days id hoped for. Two small dc who will be a nightmare to entertain in a hotel room. Please tell me your bad weather holidays and give me some hope it'll be ok!!!!!

The other thing to bear in mind is, it's not unusual for the weather apps to change their mind, so whatever it's saying now for the weekend, it might be saying something else by Friday. Add that to what other people have pointed out about how it might be saying rain but it's only for about 2 hours, and I just take it all with a pinch of salt now.

piscofrisco · 14/08/2024 22:58

We went to the Maldives, NOT in the rainy season -we were very careful about when to go. It pissed it down for the whole ten days and was very windy.
I was gutted

LKea · 15/08/2024 06:37

We arrived in Majorca after a 4 hour delay yesterday, and the weather is just awful. There’s none of this “it’ll blow over” we even have letters from the hotel telling us how bad it’ll be and how bad it’ll get, too. At the moment it’s torrential rain. Bad weather until Saturday, and now Sunday looking bad too. We go home Wednesday morning. The cost of this holiday was absurd, being tied to summer school holidays has really done us in the backside.
I’m 20 weeks pregnant, too, so no drinking through this one!
not sure how to entertain a 6 year old in this weather? We have a hire car but have been basically told not to drive anywhere due to the extreme winds, all the news outlets are reporting threat to life.
Totally devastated. Left the sun in Manchester for once!

pixiesaresmall · 15/08/2024 06:45

Quite accurate weather for abroad is aemet.com
Always recommended by people on tripadvisor forums who live abroad and post the daily weather on the forums for the area you are going to.

ChefsKisser · 15/08/2024 06:46

@LKea ah I’m gutted for you. In fairness Manchester isn’t great today and certainly isn’t in a heatwave but rubbish weather on hols is soo disappointing I’ve been there!

DrRiverSong · 15/08/2024 06:49

We once went on a summer holiday to France and a wether front meant it was properly cold. Instead of swimming in a pool and eating bread and cheese on the veranda we had to go buy wood so we could light the fire. It just flattened things a bit though. We still went a saw things and did stuff and had a nice time.

AgentJohnson · 15/08/2024 06:51

Last year it rained the entire time we were in Chiang Mai, so we were forced to switch it up, hiking and inner tubing were replaced with cookery classes and ping pong tournaments in our hostel. DD (17) said she wasn’t mad at the change in itinerary, the heat was getting boring, apparently.

backinthebox · 15/08/2024 06:51

We had ‘the Year of the 24 Degree Holiday.’

South of France - highest temperature we got over the fortnight we were there was 24C, but more typically it was about 18C and grey during the daytime and dropped to about 8C at night. We were camping, and had to go to the supermarket to buy fleeces and socks. We were so cold! We had been to the same place, same time of year for the previous 2 years and the temperatures were in the mid 30s, we’d cooked those other years!

Anyway, 24C was just as disappointing on our ski holiday that year. The snow melted and ran off the hills in rivers. We wore T-shirts from morning till night, even at the top of the mountain. By the final day there was just a little strip of white left on the piste for you to ski back to town on. It wasn’t the end of the season though, and it began to snow about an hour before we left and didn’t stop for the next fortnight, giving some of the best skiing all year.

It was disappointing to have both holidays afflicted by the same temperature, but it happens. They don’t feature on our list of our best holidays ever, but they were not ruined. We just had to alter our expectations.

Update: arrived Monday night, tuesday was fine but cloudy. As the forecast said, the storms started Wednesday morning. Biblical rain, thunder and lightening, power outages in the area for a short time. It was still warm but there was no way you could be outside in it. Thankfully it stopped early afternoon and by about 3 the sun was out so we managed some time outside by the pool.
Woke up today to more rain which is forecast to go on for longer today. All of our things on the balcony are soaked so I guess it's been raining for a while. Not sure how we'll entertain the kids today as we scoped out the hotel yesterday and there isn't much to do indoors.
After today I think it's forecast to be fine for the rest of the week so it's not too bad really but if it were like this for the whole week I would be absolutely gutted. For a beach holiday you really do need the weather. I'm sure we could hire a car and find indoor attractions for the kids but that's not what we'd hoped (or budgeted) for.
So sorry to @LKea for your Majorca nightmare, and you couldn't even drink through it.

Went to Spain end of May and fair enough only one day was showing rain and it was an almighty shower absolutely bouncing down but lasted for about 40 mins then glorious sunshine's and the floor was dry within about 10 mins!

What's funny? If it's your first holiday in years and you get shit weather you'd be gutted

You must be someone who is lucky enough to have multiple abroad holidays a year. Trust me it is pretty devastating when you've saved hard and planned a week by the pool/beach to end up sat in a hotel room in worse weather than the UK.

Where are you Pennycrayon? We're in Peurto Pollensa and arrived 2am this morning, I knew today was going to be grey and rainy, but I'm fed up of it already! I wouldn't mind one day, but tomorrow is the same and I'm praying Saturday will be ok, the morning looks rubbish tho.. Met office is hopefully more accurate than bbc weather? As the latter is predicting more rain on Sunday. We go back on Wednesday!

So Penny I hear your pain! We will book a water park for next week, and the children (9 and 11) played in the pool today but it's not the same without the sun. I'm still in my airport joggers 🤣

Treatyourself · 15/08/2024 19:52

We are in Majorca. Arrived yesterday. Weather is terrible, it rained all morning, we had a few dry hours but it gets cold quickly swimming because it's cloudy.

It's rained all evening.

I hope it gets better.

Ti7ch · 15/08/2024 19:55

Scotland is always awful whenever I visit

JoJothegerbil · 16/08/2024 06:36

We want to Mallorca once when the DC were around 8 and 6. Out of 14 days, we had 2 days of sunshine. For the rest it rained solidly. It was miserable and there is very little to do in those kind of places in the rain. I feel sorry for you OP. Hope the weather improves.

We are at Cala Llonga. Yesterday was grim. Rained on and off all day. The morning was pretty torrential, the afternoon was drizzly and grey. It was too cold to be in the pool. The kids did a couple of clubs but we spent most of the day in the room!
Today looks better where we are, maybe an isolated shower or two but hot this afternoon and the rest of the week is set to be sunny I think.
Really feel for anyone who gets shit weather for the duration as it totally ruins the holiday.

Yes I went to a place in Mallorca in October one year with an old boyfriend. Stupidly didn't even glance at the forecast, I was very young and just assumed it'd be hot! Packed only light ish clothes. Arrived to gale force winds and constant rain, colder temperature than the UK. The pool was closed due to the weather, it was out of season so most bars and restaurants had closed. There was literally nothing to do for a week, this quiet little area with nothing around it. We ended up getting a train to a shopping centre just to buy warmer clothes and try to find English books to read!

Beckysgran · 17/08/2024 16:50

Hope you have a fab holiday. We've had many holidays in menorca with parts of the week rain showers and thunderstorms even a flood which receded quickly. Even in the rain it is still very hot. I always pack an umbrella and maybe a hoody or cardigan as jackets will be too hot. Most entertainment is outside but hopefully your at a hotel that has Indoor entertainment. I'm off there next week so seriously watching the weather apps. Sadly the weather is freaky this year. Good luck

WellyBellyBoo · 17/08/2024 16:54

We used pac a macs and a couple of umbrellas Majorca in the summer. Luckily only had a couple of wet afternoons but being able to walk to the all inclusive restaurant without getting drenched was handy. Definitely take some downloaded TV on a tablet or laptop. Fingers crossed if isn't as bad as the forecast for you.

Advent0range · 17/08/2024 16:55

Well if it helps I'm going camping next week. Stupidly checked the weather forecast and it says rain all week.

northernballer · 17/08/2024 16:56

I'm in Barcelona atm and its stormy, still boiling and the kids are fine, don't worry.

turtlestarlight · 17/08/2024 16:58

We went to California to see relatives and it was the coldest and wettest 7 days they have seen since they moved there 5 years ago.

It also rained when I went to Egypt. The rain follows me.

Cattenberg · 17/08/2024 17:05

As a kid my family and I once enjoyed a rainy week in a caravan in Wales. What fun! It didn’t quite rain all week though.

Can you find an indoor swimming pool OP?

My last holiday was a week in Cornwall and the weather was mixed. This was OK for me as my skin burns easily and as much as I’d like to spend a week on the beach, I need to mix things up a bit.
