Due to fly to Spanish island tonight and the weather for at least half of the week looks shocking. Cloud, thunderstorms, wind, rain. I am gutted. We haven't been abroad for years and each week either side of ours looks glorious in terms of weather.

I'm now wondering if I should re pack as we literally just have beach wear, shorts and T-shirts. And wondering what will happen with the pool and beach days id hoped for. Two small dc who will be a nightmare to entertain in a hotel room. Please tell me your bad weather holidays and give me some hope it'll be ok!!!!!

It will likely be warm rain and too hot to wear waterproofs, so just go with the flow and wear swimsuits, or maybe shorts away from the pool, the less the better, because that's less stuff to get dry once/if the rain stops. We did this in the Algarve, when we had 12 out of 14 days of rain.......Though unless you want to flash your underwear, don't wear anything that goes transparent when wet.

Iasonnas · 12/08/2024 13:20

Don't know what you're looking at OP but accuweather suggests there potential for 30 mins of rain on Friday. Otherwise looks pretty glorious.

Don't pack waterproofs 🤣 enjoy

PfishFood · 12/08/2024 13:23

Yes. Did a trip of a lifetime to Disney World and the weather was awful. It was a time of year that everyone said you'll get a downpour around 3pm each day then it'll be fine.

Not a chance. Rain started at 1pm most days and rained continuously until gone 10pm at night. All parades cancelled, all night time shows cancelled. My feet got so soaked I ended up with blisters across the entirety of the balls of my feet. We had been planning on doing lots of mini golf courses after dinner in the evening but couldn't. Couldn't use the pool in our villa because there were thunderstorms in the area. Ended up sat indoors watching TV most evenings because we were just fed up of being soaked!

All in all it was one of our worst holidays and one of the most expensive!

Currently saving for a return visit at a different time of year!

WonderingWanda · 12/08/2024 13:26

Pack some light waterproofs and a couple of brollies just in case. Just a bit of rain or showers will be fine you can get in the pool. Maybe just do a bit of googling of other options if the weather is much worse e.g hire cars, museums, caves (if there are any....I don't know Ibiza).

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 12/08/2024 13:35

We found stuff to do. Castles, underground caves, churches, museums. There's an aquarium there if it's really bad. Thunder and lightening is tricky but if it's just a bit wet and cloudy I'd get on with it. Go looking for interesting shells, crabbing etc.

Menorca tended to be biblical for about 30-45 mins and that was it for the day but hot and steamy with the rain. I wouldn't bother with splash suits, you'll just sweat inside.

longdistanceclaraclara · 12/08/2024 14:05

AccuWeather doesn't agree with what you are saying op. It will still be hot. The kids can still go in the pool. Swimming in the sea in the rain is fun.

We had rain in Ibiza last year it lasted minutes and was dry in minutes until the next deluge.

They are all saying different things. Some are saying bad weather Friday too. Other ones just saying Wednesday and Thursday. Met office saying no thunderstorms at all.

Well let us know when you get back but it'll be hot and sunny and may rain briefly on Thursday or Friday 🤷🏽‍♀️

Sparkle849 · 13/08/2024 06:15

We're going to Mallorca too from Wednesday, planning on watching movies and reading in the room Thursday, what can you do?! I hoping it'll be a fantastic storm as can be so cosy! Oh and loads of yummy food for the hotel room!! At least it's only going to be for a couple of days, I bet the locals as so relieved they'll get some rain, apparently there's a water ban between 11pm and 11am there atm and a heatwave

itsgettingweird · 13/08/2024 06:29

Whenever I go abroad I always pack a pair of bottoms (leggings/tracksuit) and a light weight waterproof jacket.

It's very unusual for storms to be longer than a few hours are usually in the evening/night.

Rain doesn't stop you swimming or being out and about as it's rarely cold.

Also have a look at the local area before you go - or if you're happy to say - I'm sure there's plenty of rainy day options. You can even do zoos etc even if it's raining.

notanothernana · 13/08/2024 12:50

Yes, France and it rained torrentially for five days straight. The campsite down the road flooded destroying cars and tents. It was miserable and cold. 14 degrees and 30 in UK at the time.

Now we laugh about it, not then.

Bohranbiddy · 13/08/2024 13:00

Went for a week in majorca years ago, forecast was good weather reality was black skys and loads of rain. Didn't have one day on the beach or by the pool. Spent the week in the irish bar getting pissed (no kids in those days) havent been abroad since.

whirlyhead · 13/08/2024 13:05

I’m in mallorca and rain would be welcome. It’s sweltering and humid and there’s been hardly any rain all year so the water table is really low. Tourists use 4 times the amount of water than the locals do as residents are very aware of how dire the situation is.

it won’t rain all day, maybe just an apocryphal storm and a power cut (lots of power cuts here) but then it will go back to being fine. In the sun it’s closer to 40 than 30 at the moment - it’s too hot to be out in the middle of the day.

and make sure you wash off any sunscreen before going in the sea or a pool. It ruins the water quality.

lifebyfaith · 13/08/2024 13:06

Yes. A week in Portugal in August one year brought nothing but rain. It was depressing.

Leafygreen84 · 13/08/2024 13:40

Hope the weather turned out better than expected op! It rarely rains all day I’m sure you’ll get some sun

feelingalittlehorse · 13/08/2024 14:19

Yep, pissed it down for a whole week in Tenerife. Was just like being back at home, but hot. I was absolutely furious about it and have refused to ever go back. 🤣🤣

Goofy03 · 14/08/2024 17:38

How’s it been weather wise @pennycrayon88? Have had unseasonably bad weather and it sucks!

YellowphantGrey · 14/08/2024 17:50

Deebee90 · 12/08/2024 12:19

Yep I went to Tenerife in May and it was cloudy , overcast and rained. Oh and cold. Bloody awful as we weren’t expecting so bought summer stuff. Pack warm clothes and stuff to keep you busy just in case . We bought books, games etc.

That type of weather is typical for Tenerife in May. No idea why. Each time we go in May, we know not to expect sunshine as its often mega cloudy and overcast

OP it will still be warm, even if it does rain. They have forecast storms for Spain and surrounding islands. You definitely won't need full on water proofs!!

Will still be warm enough to go in a pool or be out and about and you won't need coats or wellies as it will be too warm.

Weather all over the world is changing and now it's not reasonable to expect long periods of warm weather anywhere. It's becoming more extreme in terms of heat and storms.

There's a weather warning issued for the canary islands of temperatures in excess of 37 degrees and there's no calima expected either

I'd ask on the holiday pages on Facebook for people their in real time and check the local webcams too which show exactly what the weather is like.

But you definitely don't need to stay in a hotel room all day, that's just bizarre!

BoobyDazzler · 14/08/2024 17:58

Yes, the south of France 3 in August for 3 years on the trot. 14°c day time temps for some of the time. Once we got flooded out of our tent! Thankfully there’s loads to do in France…and they make nice wine.

Iasonnas · 14/08/2024 19:33

"That type of weather is typical for Tenerife in May. No idea why. Each time we go in May, we know not to expect sunshine as its often mega cloudy and overcast"

In the north? We have been to the south in may several times and it was glorious

kirinm · 14/08/2024 19:46

We went to lanzarote in early April - I'd never been keen on the idea but thought at least it'll be warm. It wasn't. It was okay but the wind was icy cold and strong. The pools weren't heated and so my daughter was reluctant to get in them and when she did, went purple. It cost a fortune and the food was crap!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/08/2024 19:52

France in August. It absolutely fell down for about three days. We went to an indoor pool. Luckily it wasn't freezing cold. I would take light waterproofs.

I use to live in Tenerife. And boy - when it rains there does it rain!

We used to use the blow up dingy to ride down the roads there was so much surface water - and its very hilly 😂

GiveMeSomeWaterItsHot · 14/08/2024 19:59

Yes, our honeymoon 😢 We went to Crete and they were really happy because they hadn’t had rain in 6 months 🙄 I was gutted.
