Due to fly to Spanish island tonight and the weather for at least half of the week looks shocking. Cloud, thunderstorms, wind, rain. I am gutted. We haven't been abroad for years and each week either side of ours looks glorious in terms of weather.

I'm now wondering if I should re pack as we literally just have beach wear, shorts and T-shirts. And wondering what will happen with the pool and beach days id hoped for. Two small dc who will be a nightmare to entertain in a hotel room. Please tell me your bad weather holidays and give me some hope it'll be ok!!!!!

We went to vegas and had unseasonably cold weather. We hired a car and had a drive to Death Valley and there was all these signs warning about the dangers of heat exhaustion etc. we had our coats and bobble hats on 😱

Birdahoy · 17/08/2024 17:22

Once went to Sicily and by the time we got to the car park at the top of Etna it was 6 degrees amid the swirling clouds. Didn’t give it much time to be honest, in my summer dress 😂

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 17:32

Hope all in Mallorca are ok. Saw a weather report on our news about it being pretty dangerous in places

FinallyMovingHouse · 17/08/2024 17:33

Yep, Tenerife in July. Cold (jumper level) and rained for at least half of the days.

pennycrayon88 · 17/08/2024 17:43

It's been lovely the past 2 days. The first few days were pretty hairy with more screen time than I'd have liked but we are lucky it seems to have passed now. There were a few kids clubs available but they weren't the best. If it had been like that all week I'd have been gutted but it's picked up now.
Speaking to someone who has friends in Mallorca and apparently it's much worse there with flights being delayed due to storms. So in hindsight we got off pretty lucky.

We're in Costa Brava, arrived weds early hours. Full day of storming and rain on weds, brightened a little Thursday, yesterday was rainy and cold (although all the kids still in the pool!). Has been lovely today, hope it can last until Tuesday!

Pouring rain in Sicily - sheets of it one day, like a deluge, the pavements turned into rivers. The sort of rain that works its way THROUGH your waterproofs. Was on a guided tour so not much flexibility in the itinerary, and sightseeing was less fun in the rain.

A chilly grey Scotland when a heatwave had been forecast so I had packed mainly summer dresses, none of which I could wear. I wore the one jumper and pair of trousers I had packed for a fortnight. Washed them half way through, only to find that our accommodation had a washing machine, but no way to dry anything - no tumble drier, no airing cupboard, no airer. Hung stuff on the heaters in the end.

The Lake District It rained all week, and the accommodation was damp and had no heating.

Hailstorm in Lake Maggiore in May, but that was only one day and the rest of the time it was really hot.

You must be someone who is lucky enough to have multiple abroad holidays a year. Trust me it is pretty devastating when you've saved hard and planned a week by the pool/beach to end up sat in a hotel room in worse weather than the UK.

I probably was in a bit of a bad place when I wrote that. My very close family member had died really suddenly, the day after another one had died and I was shocked and sad and not feeling right at all. I would have said I was ‘totally devastated’ at that moment, because I am, and I wasn’t feeling very charitable towards someone feeling ‘totally devastated’ over some rain when they were lucky enough to be on holiday.

Not kind perhaps, which I am sorry for.

Haven’t been away for years either, for various reasons.

Missamyp · 17/08/2024 18:40

Yes, Jesolo, Venice, Sicily pissed it down all week on 3 separate holidays. We had partial rain in Mallorca last year too.

Oblomov24 · 17/08/2024 18:41

Yes, only recently, never before years ago. Recently Portugal alvor, Barcelona and Benidorm. Gutted.

Auburngal · 17/08/2024 18:55

Had torrential rain in France when camping. Played games from the board games chest that Eurocamp let their guests borrow. Then on the long trip from Vendee to Cherbourg to get ferry home, we drove in some awful hailstorms. My parents were glad they had those sturdy and hard plastic Samsonite suitcases on roof rack otherwise clothes would have been ruined.

In Florida, most days, had storms about 7pm and it chucked it down for about 15-30 mins. Majority of our time we were in Disney or another tourist attraction and queued for an indoor ride/theatre thing. Sometimes we missed it as came out of whatever we were in and saw the ground was wet. One time it rained so heavily for about 5 hours that the night parade was cancelled for H&S

BeachyBits · 17/08/2024 19:01

We’ve holidayed in the UK for the last 5 years and have certainly been lucky weather wise.

I remember going to France when we were younger, we stopped in static home in a eurocamp type place - it absolutely chucked it down all week. Torrential rain. I still remember the sound of it hitting the windows and the thunder at night. The grassy areas were flooded and looked like a bog.

We read a tonne of books & played lots of board games that week. My older brother taught us new card games too.
The outdoor pool was partially covered so we could still go swimming.
We were kids, so really not bothered about the rain, it was actually a pretty cool holiday. My dad was happy, he didn’t have to go anywhere all week & mum was pretty chill about it too. The 2nd week was much nicer weather wise and we even managed a trip
to the seaside.

LunaTheCat · 17/08/2024 19:24

Yep… traveled from the Southern Hemisphere to England in June 😂😂

Sparkle849 · 18/08/2024 09:53

We had a glorious day on the beach yesterday in Peurto Pollensa, but today and tomorrow clouds and rain! So annoying! We'll probably have had 2 days of nice weather before we return back to work etc...and we paid for this holiday with a CC that we'll have to pay off by working and saving extra hard. Very annoying!

Sparkle849 · 18/08/2024 09:57

Penny, I think you have better weather in the South, crazy as only an hour away!

MyStylish40s · 18/08/2024 10:01

Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday @pennycrayon88

We used to go to Brittany most years when the kids were young. We had many, many very wet and windy holidays there, but at least we had our car.

My friend was in Spain in June when there was rain all week and flash floods.
They have re-booked it for September because they spent most of the week in the hotel room and the dining room. Obviously not a lot of people can afford to do that or might be tied by work etc

ThinWomansBrain · 18/08/2024 10:08

Christmas tsunami 2004.
there are worse things than the odd shower.

Really hope that's the case. I just don't know what to pack. Will they need waterproofs or will it be too hot and humid for that? I just hadn't expected rain and storms at all. The weather up until this point has been 30 degrees and solid sunshine.

DD ( then 8) and I went to Spain about 10 years ago and unfortunately the forecast was accurate!!

Huge storms, cloud bursts, rough sea
.. you name it we had it. They closed the pool everytimen there was a storm b3caise kf the lightening

BUT we still had a wonderful holiday and some great memories just not quite the ones I'd expected.

One sunny morning we decided to take a ferry trip along tje coast and spend.the day in a very beautiful historic town.. all went well until we decided at about 4pm it was time to catch the ferry back.. the sky went black, the sea went black, the ferry lurched about, water cascaded down the steps from top deck.. but we made it back, run along the beach and through am under pass with water up to our knees and finally got back to our room drenched but very happy and in tears of laughter.

We jad other similar unforgettable adventures thanks to tje weather but remember it beat of all our holidays.. and nothing has yet matched up to the great ferry ride!

listsandbudgets · 18/08/2024 10:10

Ps even worh storms itnwas stillnquite warm.
We were just rather soggy!!

Cheshiremamalife · 18/08/2024 10:12

Hi! We're currently in Majorca and the weather has been very changeable! It's been incredibly hot and sunny some days but also days of heavy rain and thunder storms. It's been very warm throughout so no need to pack jackets etc but if you can fit your lightweight raincoats or some disposable ponchos in the case, I would! We've still had a lovely time though Smile

Maddy70 · 18/08/2024 11:05

I live there. Honestly dont worry about it. Storms are usually short (and impressive) its still hot so dont botĥer with coats youll roast. Just pack an umbrella.

I would be very surprised if you cant get beach days in. It may be cloudier but youll be ok.

Honestly the heat has been unbearable. Itll be must nicer and youll be able to spend longer outside

taxguru · 18/08/2024 11:54

If there's a risk of bad weather, then you choose places with things to do indoors surely? We went to Sitges for what should have been a "beach" holiday but ended up going into Barcelona every day doing more "indoor" things and outdoor things where you could shelter indoors if there were rain showers, such as the Barcelona Zoo.

When we went to Jamaica, we knew they had "tropical" style of weather with random short rain storms during the day. We chose a hotel with an indoor pool and an indoor gym. So when we saw the rain clouds start to gather, we just packed up our stuff from the sunbeds and went to the gym/indoor pool for an hour or two, then came back to the pool once the clouds had passed. We'd never have chosen a hotel without an indoor pool/gym.

Our worst was Gran Canaria. Two solid weeks of clouds and rain on and off. We never once sat by the hotel pool. Just hired a car and explored the island instead.

At the opposite end, we went to a French ski resort one February. There was virtually no "ski-able" snow left due to warm weather and rain. Again, a good job we chose a fairly large resort that had an ice rink, huge outdoor swimming pool, and other activities such as dog-sledding!

I think wherever you go, you need to have a "Plan B" in mind. Brilliant sunny weather is never guaranteed anywhere really.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/08/2024 12:13

Oh god, yes, in the Algarve one year. It literally rained 24/7 the entire time and was cold and windy. There is very little to recommend the Algarve in that type of weather, lol. We ended up hiring a car and driving round the area exploring, so we did see way more of the area than we planned, which was the one good thing about it. We also had to buy clothes as we had nothing suitable with us. Worst holiday ever, I’ve never been back!

Iasonnas · 18/08/2024 13:27

Then you'll know how her weather has been since she's been there a week Confused
