Partner telling me to eat healthily- fuming

I went for a run today. It's 23 degrees where I am, it's hot and it's not the best weather for running. I managed 3.2 miles but then had to stop as I'd ran out of water and what little water I had left in my bottle was warm given the heat.

I texted my partner when I'd finished (he was at a soft play with our toddler) to say I'd struggled but managed 3 miles, and that I felt a little dizzy and was craving water and salt (presumably because I'd sweated so much I'd lost a lot of salt). I said I might drive past McDonalds on the way home to grab some chips (just chips, nothing else) as I needed to replace the salt. He replied, "you need to eat healthily".

So... I saw red. This is a man who is overweight and who I watched sit on the sofa at lunch time and eat a Greggs cream cake. I didn't do this - I had a half a sandwich and a banana then went for a run. This is, by the way, my 3rd run of this week and I also plan to go to the gym tomorrow morning to do a weights class.

For context, I am a size 10 (BMI is 22.5 ish). So I am not even overweight but I want to tone up a bit and to get back my pre baby level of fitness, hence making this effort

Am I right to feel really annoyed by what feels like judgement for what I've chosen to eat post run, when I'm making an effort here and he is not? If he was the picture of health and fitness then maybe I'd accept that comment a bit more but ... seriously?! You eat a cake for lunch then tell me, post 3 mile run, to "eat healthily" 😵‍💫

Or am I overreacting or am I right to feel annoyed at this judgement? 🤔

No you wouldn’t. It’s barely hot at all and a mile is 20ish minutes. This reliance on water every few seconds is nonsense.
Keeping hydrated is obviously all fine and good, but it’s not necessary to stop you dropping dead (or even being uncomfortable). I walk dogs for a Dogs’ Home. I do an hour’s walk and can’t take water for me as my hand is full of water for them. I’ve been fine so far.

Unfortunately Micheal mosley and many others thought the same and wasn't fine. It's been 27°-32° across the UK and the OP has started exercising after a pregnancy. She doesn't have to declare if she's been/is bf but would need extra hydration if she is.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 12/08/2024 10:30

It doesn't sound like you're trying to lose weight, but tone up - which is done in the gym and with things like protein. Some chips won't derail that so I'd be fuming

No sh*t sherlock!

It's psychosomatic though. If I eat crap and then do exercise then I don't feel so bad.

If I do exercise then eat crap afterwards I feel really bad and annoyed with myself.

I personally wouldn't eat crap then exercise as I'd probably feel rubbish during. Whereas on occasion if I exercise and then fancy a takeaway for dinner, I'll have it. Equating 'bad' food with guilt, and exercise with worthiness isn't a good way to approach a healthy lifestyle. I don't exercise to 'burn off' the bad food, I exercise to be fit and healthy, and I eat an overall good diet to be fit and healthy. I also occasionally eat a McDonalds, because I want to. I don't feel guilty about that.

@BunnyLake It's Alright Darling has already explained, but I just want to back her up. Your body is constantly using calories to function, it's an ongoing process. Even when you're asleep. Thinking of calories in terms of 'one cream cake = 300 calories and one run = 300 calories, so I can eat a cream cake because I ran' isn't particularly useful, and is why a lot of diets fail.

HowlingFantod · 12/08/2024 10:42

I’m with you OP! A portion of chips is an easy way to replenish salt and carbs after a sweaty run, and half my running club can be found in McDonalds after a hot evening session. Emile Cairess (4th in the olympic marathon) is also a big advocate of a chippy-inclusive nutrition plan if his Runner’s World Podcast interview is anything to go by. As long as your overall diet is balanced, there’s nothing wrong with some of it arriving in a fast-food wrapper

dreamer24 · 12/08/2024 11:12

@HowlingFantod
Well if it's good enough for an Olympic marathon runner 👏🏻 I might do it more often 😂

It was 40C or thereabouts when Michael Mosley died, and in a very different climate to the UK, a whole step change different from 27C, let alone the 23C that OP says it was when she went out. He was also in his 60s, not a woman of childbearing age. The two events are simply not comparable.

GasPanic · 12/08/2024 12:07

Why is it weird ?

I used to run a lot. I used to love running.

I would often pick up some chips after running. It is not weird.

It's only weird if you associate running with trying to keep yourself fit. But a lot of people run because they just love doing it. Even though that might actually be incomprehensible to people that do it as a chore.

It's astounding how many people are rude to overweight people in public.

I'm on thyroid medication that causes weight gain in 90% of users.

One of these days I'm gonna end up force feeding them to one of these arseholes so they get to experience the shoe on the other foot!

As a thyroid sufferer myself, I'm curious to know which medication this is?

Running is about listening to how your body feels. You could run 7k a day, everyday, and still feel woozy one day after running for 10 minutes. Feeling ‘off’ on a run is often the first sign for me that I’m coming down with something.

Some people tolerate heat better than others. Some need more fluids than others.

If you’re feeling rough after running and you can tolerate milk, it’s actually really good for rehydration.

I can absolutely relate to the feeling off | coming down bit. I had an unpleasant run a couple of days ago and couldn’t understand it then. Well, I am now down with shingles…

Cassidyscircus · 12/08/2024 12:29

You’re not running to lose weight though are you OP? The chips are fine! When I was training for London marathon I had a crème egg after almost every run 😂 I’m training for one in Italy at the moment and I eat bacon butties and sweets most days

Carbimazole. All of the Graves Disease groups are full of women who've been thin their whole lives but ballooned on it.

It's the devil, but then it does keep us alive 😂

Ahh I see.

But that's just their weight going to 'normal' after their overactive thyroid has become stable.

So technically it causes weight gain, but only until that point.

The rest is down to diet/exercise, the same as it is for everyone else.

Suchasonganddance · 12/08/2024 17:44

A ridiculous time of day to run.

There is never a reason to eat a McDonald’s product - just a self indulgent poor food choice.

No, not at all. I didn't lose any weight with Graves. My heart was fast, though, hence the need for the medication.

I am now on Mounjaro and, even with that and hardly eating, I'm losing on average less than a pound a week.

As I said, there are many women on it that have ballooned. As ever, people want it to be put down to 'laziness' etc, but it's not. I've always been a 'bigger' girl, actually, and have only had Graves for about 8 years. I haven't eaten more or moved less since being on it, which is the general report from people who take it, but many see a huge increase in weight that isn't 'returning to normal weight' at all. They are now fat, not their normal weight at all.

It's really disappointing to see someone with a thyroid condition being so ignorant to other conditions and dismissive of the struggles of others.

You can die from the disease. It's not flippant and if we need medication, we NEED it. It's not fair at all to then be dismissed like that when they gain weight on it, a recognised side effect of the drug slowing your metabolism.

Sunnysundayicecream · 12/08/2024 18:12

I go to running club and once in a while we do a chippy run. Having a run out and chips on the way back. As long as you don't do it after every run you'll be fine! Keep going with the running, you get used to running in the heat, although some runners hate running in extremes of hot/cold. My nemesis is cold weather 🥶, then I become an indoor treadmill runner and freeze during my competitions!

@Mrsttcno1
It's not usually a huge amount that I lose I agree. But in 23 degrees when I'm pushing the pace, I did sweat a lot more than I would typically for this distance.

Just reply with 'healthy eh Mr Gregg's cream cakes for lunch' with a winky face.

I would also be quite confused if someone had run a pretty short run and then went for chips after it.

Agree

FootieMama · 12/08/2024 19:10

What you expected to hear? Why did you explain why you need to eat chips for the salt? Makes no sense.
It's kind of whats the point of going for a run and undo all the good it did by eating fried food?
Not about calories only. Chips are very unhealthy

FootieMama · 12/08/2024 19:13

If you want to replenish electrolyte at mcdonalds an orange juice with a pinch of salt is a better bet.

Deboragh · 12/08/2024 19:35

@Crunchymum
No I'm not a weight bore. I don't talk about it constantly. As I said, I'm not even technically overweight. It's mostly to increase my fitness.

And no he's not controlling about what I eat, it was just in general conversation, telling him I was craving salt so I might pass McDonald's and grab some chips. This is normal conversation for us. But his reply was just like wtf!? It's almost as though he felt the need to mansplain healthy eating to me. Which is embarrassing for a man who ate a cream cake for his lunch isn't it.

You probably did need the salt, also your body might have needed to replace the carbs so chips would be fine.

Neves7 · 12/08/2024 19:39

I went for a sea swim yesterday and then had two McD’s cheeseburgers! My diet is mostly healthy - I’ve lost 5 stone over the past two years and am still steadily losing 1/2 to 1 pound a week.

but I like swimming so I went and I like cheeseburgers so occasionally I have them…

you do you OP

why? better than not going for a run and having chips! maybe they run so that they can have a (very small!) indulgence every now and then!

dreamer24 · 12/08/2024 19:47

I calculated that I burned approx 330 cals on that run yesterday. Small McD's chips are 230 cals. So I'm still 100 cals lighter 😁
