to report this to the police, even though I am technically implicating myself?

My local park is locked overnight and isn’t opened until 6am. It’s a huge park but in one area part of the fence is missing so I squeeze through and go into the park to walk my dog at 4am (he is an XL bully so I like to go the park when nobody is about)

The last few mornings when I have been walking round by the pond there have been a couple of men sitting on the benches next to the pond “feeding the ducks”. I noticed they have black bin liners next to them too. I’m pretty sure I recognise these men from working in a takeaway restaurant.

I am concerned they are trying to catch ducks. I hope i’m wrong, but I just can’t see why two adult men would sit feeding the ducks at 4am?! Especially as the park is officially closed and they have bin liners next to them.

AIBU to report this to the police, even though I’ll be implicating myself too?

When I worked for a local authority we used to send an internal audit officer to carry out an annual audit of all the livestock at the local wildlife park. (They also had to audit the stocks of bull semen, which is apparently very valuable).

They are probably wondering why an adult is walking a dog at 4am 😁

How is stealing ducks an odd conclusion? 🤔
Please tell me the alternative scenario then….

-2 adult men at 4am
-Sitting on a bench in a locked park
-Encouraging ducks over with bread
-Have black bin bags next to them
-Recognise men from working in a takeaway that serves duck

Just report it to the parks and police.

So you think they're just catching random ducks and shoving them in bin bags?

Are these ducks still alive in this insane scenario or are they somehow wringing their necks?

Let me think, breaking into a park & walking a dangerous breed dog? And you have absolutely no idea what they are doing. Don't be daft.

“Dangerous dog breeds” still need to be walked? Im walking him in a locked park at 4am when nobody is about (except the potential duck snatchers) surely this is me being responsible.

You're walking a dog that is dangerous and off a lead, probably without a muzzle.
Maybe they are watching you....

Potentially stealing ducks.. this has really made me laugh 😂

I honestly don't think your report will get taken seriously. Even if it is happening or not

I'd say the same but when I was a kid our nearest takeaway was closed down because they were catching local cats and using them for meat.

And yes, it was in the local press, not just an urban myth.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 10/08/2024 15:54

Maybe they are spies are using feeding the ducks as their cover story to meet up without raising suspicion.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 10/08/2024 15:54

Imperrysmum · 10/08/2024 15:34

Surely this makes me a responsible XL bully owner? As i’m walking him at 4am when the park is closed, therefore it’s on private property?

Is the dog on a lead and muzzled though.

They’re probably not catching ducks, a duck isn’t going to be easy to catch and a binbag isn’t very strong and would likely tear if you put a duck in it. Also the effort of catching a duck, plucking it and then serving it up isn’t likely to be worth it, especially as a lot of wild ducks aren’t the same breed as edible ones and won’t have the right amount of lean meat and fat etc on to serve. To be honest though even if they were catching ducks I doubt the council would be that bothered, a few less ducks isn’t likely to be seen as an issue. It’s possible the men would get in trouble for trespassing but I’d actually think you would be in more trouble for trespassing with a banned dog breed than they would be.

Thesecretingredientiscrime · 10/08/2024 15:30

Well it does sound a bit dodgy.
Before reporting anything, I'd be going back to the park without dog to observe them more closely.

You''d sneak into a local park in the middle of the night, under the cover of darkness, all by yourself, to conduct surveillance on two men feeding ducks? Okay. 😶

luckylavender · 10/08/2024 15:55

@Imperrysmum a locked park you broke into

Delphigirl · 10/08/2024 15:55

Makes you a trespasser actually.

What the fuck? That's some pretty ignorant assumptions right there.

Delphiniumandlupins · 10/08/2024 15:55

Most likely reasons for them being in the park at 4am.

  1. Feeding the ducks on their way home from work - hopefully rice rather than bread.
  2. Sleeping in the park.
  3. Meeting in the park - unlikely if they work together - could be lovers or birdwatchers.
  4. Disposing of food waste/body parts in the pond.

please make it make sense.

the only thing I’m “definitely doing wrong” is entering a locked park.

BUT they are also entering a locked park?

So at the least we are both equally wrong.

Absolutely. Who wouldn't? 😚

Cottaging is far more likely than killing random wild ducks to be used in a takeaway, tbh.

All these goings on at the quack of dawn.
