to report this to the police, even though I am technically implicating myself?

My local park is locked overnight and isn’t opened until 6am. It’s a huge park but in one area part of the fence is missing so I squeeze through and go into the park to walk my dog at 4am (he is an XL bully so I like to go the park when nobody is about)

The last few mornings when I have been walking round by the pond there have been a couple of men sitting on the benches next to the pond “feeding the ducks”. I noticed they have black bin liners next to them too. I’m pretty sure I recognise these men from working in a takeaway restaurant.

I am concerned they are trying to catch ducks. I hope i’m wrong, but I just can’t see why two adult men would sit feeding the ducks at 4am?! Especially as the park is officially closed and they have bin liners next to them.

AIBU to report this to the police, even though I’ll be implicating myself too?

Isn't an off lead dog better at catching a sleepy duck in the middle of the night

ExhaustedHousewife · 10/08/2024 16:12

How do people think these things up? Absolutely brilliant OP 10/10 and adding in an xl bully for extra froth, bravo! 😂

You’re allowed to walk an XL bully off lead on private property? The park is closed at 4am so it’s private property.

It’s not. It’s just locked.

Takeaways here open til 1-2am. The odd ones even later.

By the time the cleaning is done and closed up it could easily be 3.30am. If they fancy relaxing in the park no reason they couldn’t be there at 4-4.30am

there more likely to be dumping food waste than stealing ducks

That’s what I thought too.

Justcallmebebes · 10/08/2024 16:14

Yes! I have a walk on my way to work that takes me along a canal path and in the last year 4 swans have gone missing and it turns out some bastard(s) caught them and presumably ate them so yes, I would report this as suspicious behaviour

Imperrysmum · 10/08/2024 16:08

He’s all above board.

I walk him at 4am because many people (like the people on this thread) make rude remarks under their breath when we walk past. Parents grab their children and I get dirty looks if heaven forbid he barks at another dog (like dogs do)

It’s just not nice.

Well-trained dogs don’t bark at other dogs when walking…

CountessWindyBottom · 10/08/2024 16:14

This thread is quackers.

The OP breaks into a public park at night to walk her beast of a dog and wants to report two other people who have also broken into the park. In order to keep her beast off lead and muzzle and continue with her bizarre sense of entitlement she wants to accuse these random men of depleting the park's duck population so they can be added to tomorrow's duck dishes.

Yes, call the old bill and see how quackers they think this is. I'd say they'll be flippin' hysterical. Let us know what they say.

Wow, who are you… Ms Trunchball? You know dogs bark at each other to play right? It doesn’t mean they are not well trained 🙄

Spot on, if you read the statistics and evidence on pitbulls and pitbull-type dogs (Because "XL bully" is not a breed, they are differently shaped pitbulls) and you don't get yours put down immediately, then you are a deeply reckless individual and I can only pray it's you and not an innocent bystander who gets eaten when your dog snaps.

So you have no idea if they have been eaten. And in fact no idea if the swans were killed?

because if they were taken home and eaten there wasn’t a dead body.

and based on that you think these men are likely to be catching ducks to use in the takeaway?

and Op, who is walking her dog illegally, should go report it? Based on nothing?

Because I like the way they look and I feel safe having it with me. What’s the big problem, I follow all the rules.

Not if the dog has no lead or muzzle on.

Surely this makes me a responsible XL bully owner? As i’m walking him at 4am when the park is closed, therefore it’s on private property?

Wait. Please don’t tell me that he’s unmuzzled because you’ve mistakenly deemed it private property…?

murasaki · 10/08/2024 16:17

The OP is displaying exactly the attitude that most people expect XL bully owners to have.

No I mean at home. I feel safe having him at home incase someone broke in etc.

Nope. A closed park isn’t private property. It’s public property that’s closed. You risk your dog - rightly - being seized.

CrunchyCarrot · 10/08/2024 16:19

How many ducks are there? Surely after a few days/weeks of catching ducks there would be none left? And any left would be traumatised by seeing their duck family grabbed, no doubt with a lot of splashing and feathers, and just not come back to that particular location?

So many questions. 😅

Personally I’d report…this happened to local swans in some areas years ago. There are also sheep and animals being taken for illegal slaughter from farms.
Although whether any proper due diligence is done with investigation, who knows 🤷‍♀️

A well trained dog is neutral to dogs they don’t know. And they don’t bark at other dogs to play if they haven’t been told they can play with that dog.

If your dog is barking to play with dogs they don’t know, I am not sure many people would consider that well trained.
