to report this to the police, even though I am technically implicating myself?

My local park is locked overnight and isn’t opened until 6am. It’s a huge park but in one area part of the fence is missing so I squeeze through and go into the park to walk my dog at 4am (he is an XL bully so I like to go the park when nobody is about)

The last few mornings when I have been walking round by the pond there have been a couple of men sitting on the benches next to the pond “feeding the ducks”. I noticed they have black bin liners next to them too. I’m pretty sure I recognise these men from working in a takeaway restaurant.

I am concerned they are trying to catch ducks. I hope i’m wrong, but I just can’t see why two adult men would sit feeding the ducks at 4am?! Especially as the park is officially closed and they have bin liners next to them.

AIBU to report this to the police, even though I’ll be implicating myself too?

"Why would they sit there for ages with bin bags to steal ducks? " @ LoquaciousPineapple

They're just Quack dealers picking up their supplies. obs.

You think she's one of the two men with ducks at 4am being spied on my a woman and her unbelievably dangerous dog?

Or she's a duck?

Possible

🤣

In seriousness, I would report.

It's up to the police to decide if a crime is being committed.

oneskip · 11/08/2024 09:39

You need to get your ducks in a row, Op

'Bully in a black bean sauce' is part of that insufferable trend no ?

After this thread, can you start a thread about why you feel so unsafe in your home that you got an XL bully OP

soakingupthesun · 11/08/2024 09:57

This is a fun thread, although slightly quackery. Can't wait for the update OP. I presume you're having a sleep in after your late night.

In all seriousness though, the main thing I took from this thread is why on earth you would acquire a dog if that nature though, one that is potentially volatile ( and worse), that you get awful stares when you take it out in public, so much so that you feel the only acceptable time to walk them is in the middle of the night in a closed off property.

That's not a life for you. That's not a life for the dog. Will you not eventually grown tired of these in the middle of the night jaunts?

It sound pretty miserable tbh. And where abouts exactly do you live that you feel so unsafe in your own house that you are only comfortable having this breed to guard you?

I'm not deliberately targeting you, I just don't understand the need for this.

Is this a new take on the horrible racist urban legends about Chinese takeaways stealing cats and dogs to cook?

I actually don't understand if it's anything else. Why would they sit there for ages with bin bags to steal ducks? Who do you think they're stealing the ducks from? Why is it relevant that they work in a takeaway? How many ducks could they possibly "steal", that it would be worth their time and effort to sit in a park at 4am luring them into bin bags?

I think further down in the thread we've had my local Chinese was serving cat and it's not an urban myth...... yeah right, they've also taken the word gullible out of the dictionary!

You’re allowed to walk an XL bully off lead on private property? The park is closed at 4am so it’s private property.

im not sure if that counts, being on private property that you don’t have permission to be on! And as the blokes at the pond came in, who is to say other people won’t come in at that time? I was supporting you against other people on here re you dog, but if you do walk it off the lead, even in a closed park (which does not count as private property by the way as far as the law is concerned) you are breaking the law and irresponsible.

An exempt dog becomes an illegal dog the minute the owner breaks any of the exemption conditions.

Having the dog off lead somewhere other than private property she either owns or has permission to use is a breach of those conditions.

If caught, the dog could be siezed and then probably held in kennels whilst the owner is taken to court (if she chooses to defend herself and not just sign the dog over), and then euthanised.

I don't know that we've seen any such seizures yet (we might have, I haven't been looking) but I do know with the pitbull ban, at least one dog was seized after the owner removed the muzzle to allow the dog to vomit without choking. There was then and almost certain is now, zero excuse and zero tolerance for breaking the exemption rules.

Fair comment
I must have missed that she had the dog off lead.
i agree that the exception rules should not be broken…

I still disagree that all dogs of the breed shouldn't be judged the way that they are!

but my opinion is my own no need to attack me personally…

Do you realise how many are bred and released purely for shooting? Animal Aid reckon about a million.

Not really the point though is it , it OP is correct about the bin bag take away men you could be getting peking pond duck, I don't think that's what one has in mind when ordering a Chinese. Glad you're on this OP.

Where do people think duck meat comes from? Are pond ducks dirty?

Maybe she could complaint to Trading Standards because Pekin is a specific breed and if the are selling mallard as Pekin perhaps that's an angle.

But objectively, wild duck is likely to have had a better life than farmed so depends what the moral issue is for OP.

Really??
The issue is that the ducks aren’t theirs to kill, they’re not necessarily wild, , and probably aren’t being killed humanely. You can’t just go and kill the wildlife!

Thank you, I will xx

Just a quick update, i’m currently on my surveillance operation, i’m crouched in a bush in the arboretum which is right next to the duck pond so I should be able to see what they’re up to. Hopefully they’ll turn up soon cos I’m starting to get cramp in my leg 😩

Over and out.

You've actually done it, OPGrin
What's the verdict?

You literally can kill certain wild ducks, such as mallard, ubder the law, as long as you don't cause unnecessary suffering.

The issue is in identifying whether they are wild or owned birds.

iv had enough of your childish, ridiculous nonsense comments now this is my last response to you :)
you seem a very judgemental and spiteful person who clearly just judges a situation before actually knowing facts.
from your ridiculous response to me I have one interesting fact for you: I actually dislike any large dog!
But just because I dislike them I don’t feel that it gives me the right to judge or make rude comments to anyone who owns one or has a different opinion to me….
maybe learn from that!?!

All you have done is make ridiculous and judgemental comments on a post when the OP is actually not asking yours or anyone else else’s opinion of her dog but a different subject entirely…

invisiblecat · 11/08/2024 15:00

Of course, the other way to do it would be to report them to Environmental Health, and tell them that you believe they are poachers taking ducks from the local park at night, and then serving them up in the restaurant.

willowtolive · 11/08/2024 15:29

@EatTheGnome I think you're taking this a little bit too seriously, however farmed ducks are looked after like you know wormed and things.

Well they don't, by law, need to have access to a body of water to swim which I think is sad.

I'm also not really into second hand antibiotics.

Pixiedust88 · 11/08/2024 17:56

I’d be more worried about you being caught walking the dog, who I’m assuming you are walking off the lead and unmuzzled at 4am. If not I apologise.
