to report this to the police, even though I am technically implicating myself?

My local park is locked overnight and isn’t opened until 6am. It’s a huge park but in one area part of the fence is missing so I squeeze through and go into the park to walk my dog at 4am (he is an XL bully so I like to go the park when nobody is about)

The last few mornings when I have been walking round by the pond there have been a couple of men sitting on the benches next to the pond “feeding the ducks”. I noticed they have black bin liners next to them too. I’m pretty sure I recognise these men from working in a takeaway restaurant.

I am concerned they are trying to catch ducks. I hope i’m wrong, but I just can’t see why two adult men would sit feeding the ducks at 4am?! Especially as the park is officially closed and they have bin liners next to them.

AIBU to report this to the police, even though I’ll be implicating myself too?

He’s all above board.

I walk him at 4am because many people (like the people on this thread) make rude remarks under their breath when we walk past. Parents grab their children and I get dirty looks if heaven forbid he barks at another dog (like dogs do)

It’s just not nice.

FFS you cannot be real. It's common sense for people to keep themselves and their kids away from XL Bullies. A nasty breed with a terrible reputation and rightly so

Having witnessed some men stealing geese and swans in London a few years ago I’d be reporting them. I also wouldn’t stick around to observe them as they might notice and become upset.

tommyhoundmum · 11/08/2024 18:24

Yes, tell the park wardens/local council not the police.

They will have a wildlife person who will take action.

What you describe is not unusual. Often people from other cultures don't understand the concept of onamental ponds and creatures. Someone here got jailed and fined for having a large live bird inside his coat. The judge was unimpressed with his assertion he was cuddling it.

Btb · 11/08/2024 18:28

Just say you are walking to clear your head don’t mention your dog

Facescar77 · 11/08/2024 18:37

OP, did you see anything?! We need an update!

LexiiRH · 11/08/2024 18:40

Imperrysmum · 11/08/2024 03:54

Thank you, I will xx

Just a quick update, i’m currently on my surveillance operation, i’m crouched in a bush in the arboretum which is right next to the duck pond so I should be able to see what they’re up to. Hopefully they’ll turn up soon cos I’m starting to get cramp in my leg 😩

Over and out.

Last post…😬🤔

Is the OP still in that bush? 😅🤣

LaraThot · 11/08/2024 18:42

No sign of the XL bully in the 4am pic, what a shame.

petelacey · 11/08/2024 18:42

Never ever talk to the police. You will regret it.

Count the ducks tomorrow. Count them the next day. If any are missing report them.

This, but make sure you have accurate descriptions of the missing ducks. You can’t expect the police to follow up just any missing ducks.

I think it best you find somewhere else to walk the dog.

If these men commit a crime, you could be implicated if there is CCTV,.

There are two of them, one of you. As XL bullies have to wear a muzzle, (if he isn't wearing one, you would be in trouble if they reported you), your dog would not be able to defend you.

They might have seen you many times. They might not be feeding the ducks. The black plastic bag might be for you.

Don't go back. Find another dog walk.

I meant at home. Most people would say they feel safer having a big dog with them at home?

Most dogs don’t deter people from breaking in, they take treats and befriend the dogs with them who then happily let them in. I wouldn’t want to be living with the type of dog who would attack someone so severely they could die from their injuries. I know there is a risk from all dogs but I’m fairly sure statistically the chances of serious life changing injuries/death being caused by a dachsund are lower than those caused by an XL bully. I’m happy to be corrected if I’m wrong obviously!

murasaki · 10/08/2024 15:33

They probably are thinking that you are dodgy and are walking an illegal unregistered dog. Horses for courses, innit.

Where did she say her dog was an illegal, unregistered dog?

Isinglass20 · 11/08/2024 19:28

Just watch police sergeant ‘s face twitching when you’re reporting the incident.
So madam what precisely are you doing at 4am in a locked park?
oh you’ve an XL bully. Is it registered? We’re you threatening these two gentlemen with your dog?
Im sure if they were trying to catch ducks the whole neighbourhood would’ve heard the quacking.Ducks are very strong and deliver nasty pecks.

T1Dmama · 11/08/2024 19:35

Made an anonymous report on line

Washingupdone · 11/08/2024 19:37

Just asked the park attendant/ townhall if he thinks there are less ducks, if so tell him of your suspicions, not that you were present but have seen them leave the park by this exit carrying black bags as a passerby in the street.
Don’t put yourself in danger of them seeing you in the park.

Exactly! Ducks really don't cost that much for them to be going to those sorts of lengths 🤦🏻‍♀️.

GripeOfTheDay · 11/08/2024 20:19

Oh stop being so pious all.

So, what happened..... Is duck off my take away menu???

😁

Tulipsareredvioletsarebue · 11/08/2024 20:23

Nice casual racism bit, with takeaway workers as potential duck stealers just because they sit by the like. A new low.

Suchasonganddance · 11/08/2024 20:36

Have you ever tried to catch a mallard?

For some reason my small garden pond attracts them. It’s not uncommon for a duck to arrive with fishing line tangled round its leg - almost impossible to catch and help them. I would be more concerned that the men were feeding them waste food that is totally unsuitable for ducks - eg bread.

Boopbeepbeepboop · 11/08/2024 20:56

No return form the OP? A non event then?

Not all XL bullies are vicious. Some are the dopiest dogs ever. It is not the breed that is the issue it is the owner and how they are raised. People are a nasty breed with a terrible reputation but I don’t see anyone complaining that we need to be restricted or anything. If OP is a responsible dog owner and stays within the law when taking the dog out why shouldn’t they walk it at 4am to avoid judgment. Dogs can pick up on peoples reactions to them and it can make them defensive or nervous. As a dog lover myself I agree that some breeds are dangerous but OP if your dog is friendly I’d happily fuss it if I bumped into you

So XL Bully owners are disproportionately irresponsible then and the breed attracts arseholes does it? Maybe so but it's also the breed. Half of all of Britain's XL Bully dogs descend from one inbred animal from the US named Killer Kimbo', genealogy created a shallow gene pool of unstable fighting beasts responsible for 70 per cent of dog attacks in Britain.

They are probably wondering why an adult is walking a dog at 4am 😁

Well when you see a big scary dog walking /running around off the lead- you can understand why. Not rocket science

Sunshine9218 · 11/08/2024 23:49

Ask them if they are catching ducks in a jokey way and see what they say!

Or make some other joke about the bin bags
