Need urgent advice to lose weight quickly- bridesmaid dress doesn’t fit!

I’m due to be bridesmaid for a good friend next Saturday. She’s just been round to drop my dress off, and I tried it on while she was here- we couldn’t get it done up!

I’m 5’ 5.5” and according to my scales I weigh 64.7kgs, or 10 stone 2lbs and 10oz. My clothes are mostly a size 10. So I’m not exactly big- I’ve got a 9mo baby that is still breastfed but I’ve just checked and back in February when the dresses were first ordered (and I was weighing myself regularly to see if the baby weight was coming off) I was 62kgs!! But I don’t weigh myself that often now as I tend to just go by how my clothes fit, and whilst some things are a little on the tight side atm there’s nothing that I can’t get into.

My friend has taken the dress home to see if she can get it altered to let it out a little bit, but we had a look and there isn’t really any extra fabric to play with and the style of it means that it would be quite complicated to make any big adjustments to. So basically I’ve got a week to lose enough weight to fit into this dress.

Help!!

@Whatsernom - excellent points 👌

I don’t think I’m gonna be able to fit into the dress and there are no alterations places locally who have the time for it so the plan is that baby and I will travel up to Lincoln on Thursday and stay overnight at my friend’s parents house, then her Aunt is going to attempt to perform a miracle alter my dress on Friday. Her idea apparently is to insert some stretchy sheer panels either side of the bodice in such a way that it’ll look like cutouts? Dunno but it sounded like a plan. DH will travel up with other DC to hotel on Friday ahead of the wedding on Saturday.

Can you order another dress and use the fabric for her aunt to make the adjustments?

PoppysAunt · 11/08/2024 19:10

I think that sounds like the most sensible approach, @AngeloMysterioso - rather than some madcap diet scheme!
It could work, but maybe have an alternative dress on standby anyway?

NannaKaren · 11/08/2024 19:33

Panel in the back or sides of zip allows (you mentioned side zipper)…
a local dry cleaners might have a seamstress or similar doing alterations 🤞🏻

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 11/08/2024 19:46

Good luck OP, I hope it works out. Have fun at the wedding!

OhcantthInkofaname · 11/08/2024 19:51

Bridal dresses and bridesmaid dresses are always small. So if you are a ten you should order a 12. Bigger is always better as you can always take something in not let something out. You should see if the bridal shop has something close in style in your size.

rosyAndMoo · 11/08/2024 19:58

Where doesn’t it zip up? Is it hips/waist or is it chest/boobs?
you have only put on about 1/2 stone. Lots of walking, low carbs and low ish calories for a week and you should shift that.

also was baby due a feed before you tried on? Could be that big full boobs vs empty boobs could get the dress zipped up?

Find someone with Norovirus and lick them.

I lost several kg in a week.

it wasn’t.., pleasant.

Cut carbs and concentrate on protein and veg only. Drink plenty of water. When I was getting married dI tried my dress on and had this issue as we had a delay of a year due to COVID. I swore to the lady at the dress shop I would get in it and she looked at me sceptical and made a bit of a worried comment, but 4 weeks later… boom! I think she was almost quite impressed, but I am used to that type of thing when I need to do it 😂

Eat nothing but carrots.

Book a sauna session or two.

On one day, wear as many clothes as you can and go for an hour-long run.

Fast.
Only consume tea or water for at least three days. Weight will fall off.

Just wondering, maybe one of the other bridesmaids has lost a bit of weight before the wedding and can swap dresses with you.

If it's a zip up the side, could you zip the zip up and get her to put a lace up option at the back? I'd imagine that might be easier than cut out panels from a POV of making it "bridesmaid" ish? But either sounds good and a lot more sensible than trying to lose 2.5 kg in a week.

Dieting whilst breastfeeding isn’t an issue, your body will prioritise making milk. I would drink lots of water, eat healthy good quality food (no empty calories or ‘diet food’) and aim to be in 1000 calorie a day deficit. You will be using about 500 calories a day to produce milk assuming you are still reading a fair bit. Your base metabolic rate is probably around 1800 (assuming you are normally active and don’t have excessive amounts of muscle) so that gets you to 2300. So you either need to eat 1300 calories a day (which is difficult imo) or you need to burn extra calories to make the eating goal more achievable. I would try and add 500 calories of extra walking if possible because eating 1800 calories a day is pretty doable. You need to walk around 10km to burn 500cals so that’s about 12,000 extra steps. If you are reasonably active already you might do 8000 so aiming for 20,000 a day should do it. That should bring you back under 62kgs in an week, assuming that’s the target. Good luck!

Christwosheds · 11/08/2024 22:37

If the original dresses were a different colour, I think almost certainly the one you tried on was bigger than the one you now have.
2kg might make a dress a big snug but not unable to zip up level of tight. So it is a manufacturing issue, but that doesn’t help you now.
The sheer stretchy stuff should work. Or lowering the back, depending on where it won’t zip up. A low back might sort it. Or as pps have suggested, lacing across the back. Lots of prom dresses have this to make the fit more flexible.

SnozPoz · 12/08/2024 06:02

Low carb (no carbs in evening) high protein high fibre diet, no drinks except tap water and black tea and coffee... you could easily lose the 2kgs in retained water. Like a PP said. No bread, pasta, rice or potatoes or processed food

I'm 5'4" and 10s 2 lb and I'm a size 14/16, how are you a size 10?

Packetofcrispsplease · 12/08/2024 10:21

I wouldn’t go on a crash diet because you’ve got little children to look after and need the energy !
I would cut out all foods that can potentially make you bloated and get some control pants .
other option is a good dressmaker can alter and in many cases provide the extra piece of fabric .
my daughter needed urgent alterations as an outfit ordered online was too short and she didn’t want it like that at all .
quick visit to a dressmaker and a nearby dress fabric shop and we were sorted ✔️

There are so many variables when it comes to a person's weight distribution/body composition.

I'm 5' 5", 9 stone and a size 8. I was a size 14/16 at 13 stone.

PoppysAunt · 12/08/2024 12:36

Also "size 12" or "size 14" means absolutely nothing, because they're not standardised.
I've got clothes of varying "sizes" - they all fit!

Pinkrinse · 12/08/2024 14:22

The best way to
lose weight quickly is the Zoe Harcombe diet. It’s severe but I lost 10lbs in a week, and was about a stone and half over. It’s basically vegetables and protein. Nothing else. It’s strict, but you can eat unlimited quantities, a bit of butter and oil, herbs spices etc. and 1 portion of oats and a small portion of Greek yogurt plain a day. Trust me I’ve done this again when I needed to shift weight and bloat quickly.
