Need urgent advice to lose weight quickly- bridesmaid dress doesn’t fit!

AngeloMysterioso · 10/08/2024 12:04

I’m due to be bridesmaid for a good friend next Saturday. She’s just been round to drop my dress off, and I tried it on while she was here- we couldn’t get it done up!

I’m 5’ 5.5” and according to my scales I weigh 64.7kgs, or 10 stone 2lbs and 10oz. My clothes are mostly a size 10. So I’m not exactly big- I’ve got a 9mo baby that is still breastfed but I’ve just checked and back in February when the dresses were first ordered (and I was weighing myself regularly to see if the baby weight was coming off) I was 62kgs!! But I don’t weigh myself that often now as I tend to just go by how my clothes fit, and whilst some things are a little on the tight side atm there’s nothing that I can’t get into.

My friend has taken the dress home to see if she can get it altered to let it out a little bit, but we had a look and there isn’t really any extra fabric to play with and the style of it means that it would be quite complicated to make any big adjustments to. So basically I’ve got a week to lose enough weight to fit into this dress.

Help!!

As a life long yoyo dieter your only real option is a sauna; you essentially dehydrate yourself.

water weight is all you have to play with it a week.

given you are breastfeeding that isn’t really going to work unless your have a store of milk and they will take bottle feeds for 24/48hours.

I’m an optimist with this stuff but I really think your best bet is to work on getting it altered somehow.

edit: just saw about Glastonbury.
a day of on off sauna and low carb diet will do it and Spanx for good measure.
but honestly I’d alter the dress and be comfy

AngeloMysterioso · 10/08/2024 13:30

So we’ve actually all got a different style of dress, they’re just the same fabric/colour/length. So at least if we have to alter it in some way it won’t be too obvious.

My friend’s aunt is a pretty good dressmaker (she made the flower girl outfits) so as a last resort she might be able to help us out, only problem is she lives near Lincoln and I live in Kent!

I’m so cross with myself for not being more careful and at least keeping a closer eye on my size. I guess it’s all well and good going by how your clothes fit, but it doesn’t mean much when I spend a large portion of my time in sweatpants!

Anywhere near Biggin Hill? Amazing seamstress there managed to let out my sister's lace wedding dress by 2inches when it looked like there was no fabric at all.

GRex · 10/08/2024 13:35

Which bit of the dress doesn't fit? Shapewear or diet will only help with stomach, not boobs/ribs in that timeframe. Get a panel insert in the back with a corset on top, easy for most seamstresses to do quickly.

MarisCapri · 10/08/2024 13:36

A jockey friend of mine exercises with plastic bin bags under his clothes in the lead up to each race, so that he makes his weigh in.

Sounds mad, but true!

TangentsPlease · 10/08/2024 13:39

I second spanx - the proper ones - mine take me down an entire dress size, they're really wondrous

PomPomChatton · 10/08/2024 13:41

This happened to a friend of mine, pregnancy expanded her rib cage so no amount of dieting would fix it. Only solution was to add a panel in the back. You don't even need a 'good' dressmaker at this stage, just someone who can bodge a solution that will last a couple of hours.

Darkdiamond · 10/08/2024 13:41

I do the Big 3:

  1. Low carb
  2. 8 hour eating window
  3. Low calorie

It's doable if you eat fatty/protein food within your low calories allowance, eg avocado, eggs, cream etc (just track it)

Barney16 · 10/08/2024 13:42

To get into my wedding dress I had a body wrap. I'm sure there's a proper name fir it. Basically the beautician covered me with some kind of cream and wrapped me in bandages, then left me under a heated blanket. When I got unwrapped I had lost inches. Very temporary fix of course and it's a long time ago so I'm not even sure it's a thing any more.

Jagsy · 10/08/2024 13:42

Hi OP, apologies if this has been mentioned already. I’m not sure where you live but if you have any Indian/asian outfit shops they usually have seamstress who works there that can adjust garments. If you want quick turnaround they charge extra but can do it. They will also have cuts of material, or can suggest ideas of how they can alter your dress to fit. I only say this as when I went to an Indian weddding and left it very late for my outfit, I paid extra and they asked to come back in 3 hours and had it ready. This was in London.

PoppysAunt · 10/08/2024 13:43

I don't think a crash diet for a breastfeeding mum with other little ones is a good idea - plus, it could get to the end of the week and she's still not there!
I think you're just going to have to get a different dress, maybe similar colour and style.

BossMadam · 10/08/2024 13:44

I’d go gluten free so gluten free bread, eggs and Greek yoghurt or Skyr with fruit and honey for breakfast, big salad with turkey breast and cheese for lunch, sweet potatoes or brown rice, fish/meat, and loads of veg for dinner, fruit and nuts for snacking, a protein shake a day and get running if you can. A light 20 minute jog twice a day morning and evening with a good boob protecting sports bra. Lots of water - at least 2 litres. You will certainly loose an inch or two in a week without starving yourself depending on what your current diet is like.

Have an off the peg back up dress ready just in case, with tags still on so you can take it back if not needed.

It would be nice if you can get into the dress but more important to feel comfortable and enjoy the day.

PoppysAunt · 10/08/2024 13:45

Can you show us the dress and maybe we can find something similar for you?

SaintHonoria · 10/08/2024 13:46

Do not make yourself I'll with shrink wraps and restrictive garments or wrecking your metabolism by quick fix starvation diet.

If the dress can't be let out the you'll have to wear a different dress in as close as match as you can.

AngeloMysterioso · 10/08/2024 12:17

It zips up the side (one of those horrid pinchy invisible zips) so a corset fastening wouldn’t really work.

Do the zip up, ask a seamstress to insert a corset back?

Thebellofstclements · 10/08/2024 13:47

The Jason Vale juice cleanse did the job for me but I wasn't breast feeding. Presumably your body will just turn more body fat into milk so you'll lose even more but you'll certainly be feeling more tired. Will be fine for a week, but hard.

Brexile · 10/08/2024 13:47

Can you unpick the sides and sew in a bit of stretchy fabric in a similar colour? If there's no seamstress on hand you can unpick the invisible zip and have somebody hand-sew you into.the dress with its new stretchy side panels. I suggest this because it's an easy fix which doesn't require any specialist knowledge - speaking as a vintage clothes enthusiast who has done plenty of very simple alterations and who doesn't know how to fit an invisible zip! (Which I agree are horrible pinchy things.)

MadKittenWoman · 10/08/2024 13:47

Jason Vale 7 day juice diet.

PoppysAunt · 10/08/2024 13:47

Also eating"gluten free" foods doesn't mean that you lose weight!

AInightingale · 10/08/2024 13:47

Fast 800 type low carb diet, but you will need more calories if bf. Though weight loss normally takes more than a week to be evident so I think you just need the dress altered!

KerChingo · 10/08/2024 13:48

Get a waist trainer

IncessantNameChanger · 10/08/2024 13:48

I'd agree with shakes. Do slim fast for a week..walk lots. I lost 10lbs doing a protein shake diet but you wouldn't have time to order it. You could have lots of GI food with it too. It's surprisingly filling but you take a few days to get used to not chewing. So add in the low gi, apples, crunchy salads etc. The chocolate one you can have as hot chocolate.

Lemongrassandcamomile · 10/08/2024 13:48

This happened to me; I had pre-menstrual bloating. I had a wrap thingy done at a salon on the morning of the wedding and it was just enough.

Onlinetherapist · 10/08/2024 13:48

@AngeloMysterioso this is what you need:

You need to go to bed hungry every night.

Are there other bridesmaids...are the dresses matching? Or is it just you and a different dress wouldn't look out of place

Or if there are other bridesmaids could you swap dresses? I was once a BM and when the dresses arrived mine was too small but another BM had lost weight and we managed to swap and with minor alterations it all worked out ok.
