Quiet neighbours now making noise.

My neighbours talked to us about the noise coming from our property. OK, my son has a hobby that does make an annoying noise. Since then we have made sure he's doing it less but we obviously aren't going to stop him completely. They haven't said anything since and I think we've been considerate in reducing the number of hours our son does his thing.

It seems like they've now decided that they are allowed to make more noise. We've been neighbours for years and they've always been quiet. Now we get occasional music or radio in their backyard. When I asked them about it they said they have always worn headphones to be considerate but they don't really like listening that way, so they thought it was fair they got to have their hobbies the way they enjoy them best as well.

Would I be unreasonable to complain to them again? There is a difference between children playing and music when they have the option of headphones.

OK I am obviously not in line with the majority thought on this.

The basketball is only about half an hour at a time, a few times a day. Their music yesterday was for two hours. We've got our son down to no more than three or four times a day now, so it's not excessive. It used to be twice that. So we've done something about it.

So they have to put up with 2 hours of basketball and you're complaining about two hours of music?
Unless the music was being played at 2am you are being very unreasonable.

BoxOfCats · 10/08/2024 07:59

Half an hour at a time, a few times a day?! That absolutely is excessive and I would be pissed off in their shoes. Basketball noise is repetitive and annoying.

Noise from basketball playing is torture! How old is your DS? Why do people think it’s ok to put up a basketball net if they’ve got neighbours nearby?

jackstini · 10/08/2024 08:00

YABVU

Basketball bouncing is like Chinese water torture - loud and repetitive; one of the worst noises there is!

Music is normal noise when you live in a residential area

Unless they are blasting it out after 11pm/before 7am it's fine

DaisyChain505 · 10/08/2024 08:00

I’d rather hear someone’s radio than the continuous bang bang bang of someone’s basket ball. You’re the annoying neighbour, they’ve just had enough.

strangeandfamiliar · 10/08/2024 08:00

I'm with your neighbours on this one.

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 10/08/2024 08:00

At half an hour a time as you said that's 2 HOURS of hearing a ball thud against the ground A DAY 😦

And you got him down to this?

Wow, you are very unreasonable and I'm not surprised they took the 'fuck it's approach

Monkeybutt1 · 10/08/2024 08:01

We play music in the backgarden on a nice day as do our neighbours it's just at an appropriate volume. We always have noise, kids playing, people talking having fun BBQs etc. i didn't know silence was expected 🤣
Personally I love it in summer sitting in the garden listening to the lawnmowers, people having fun etc

He's 13 and we think it's better than screen time. I didn't think normal kid playing noise was wrong.

I had an hour of radio during the week when I was trying to work from home last week.

Two or so hours of basketball noise thoughout the day?

Fuck that. I’ll be retaliating with some Wagner at full blast. Your neighbours seem positively restrained.

Have you tried wearing headphones when you WFH? Send your ds to the local basketball park where he can play an actual game with his friends.

The horror. Your time to try headphones?

So you expect people to sit in silence because you are working from home but it’s okay for your son to be bouncing a ball around 2 hours a day? What about the people also working from home? One rule for you and another for everyone else.

MissingMoominMamma · 10/08/2024 08:04

You can’t ask your neighbours not to listen to the radio because you’re working 😂.

How about YOU wear the headphones!

It could be argued it's inconsiderate and selfish to not allow a child their hobby. Maybe I'll limit it to three sessions a day but I think any less is not fair to my son.

Oh boo hoo. Just shut your window or wear headphones. The fact your neighbours have gone to such lengths shows how annoying the basketball is to them.

MissingMoominMamma · 10/08/2024 08:05

Take your child to the park to play basketball.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 10/08/2024 08:05

Earplugs are your friend if you need silence to concentrate. Or send your teenage off to the park to play and maybe they will reciprocate gratefully. It isn’t like he is a tiny tot.

So in total, 3.5-4 hours of basketball per day, and they are doing 2 hours of noise?
You really are the tone-deaf (no pun intended) CF neighbour.mi am amzed you have the temerity to complain to them, let alone come on here thinking yanbu!!

Your poir neighbours

Bellatrixpure · 10/08/2024 08:05

You are so unreasonable. Noise is noise. I bet their music is actually something that others enjoy rather than your sons annoying noisy hobby.

NewtGuineaPig · 10/08/2024 08:06

Yes would definitely be unreasonable to complain unless it's very late at night/early in the morning or maybe if music with a lot of profanity. I think they were being too considerate before. I don't think it's unreasonable for your son to play basketball outside but it is absolutely awful noise and much worse than music or radio.

OpalBird · 10/08/2024 08:06

Maybe I need to talk to them and ask what they think they can tolerate.
