McDs reopened and massive queues

longlocks · 08/08/2024 20:15

Between my parents and my homes there is a McDs which reopened the other day after 7 weeks of being refurbished. I normally take the shortest route - a mile and a quarter. Due to the massive queues to the drive thru, I have to take the longer route which is double.

Have no idea why people are going to this McDs when they could have gone to the other 5 McDs within 5 miles in all directions in the meantime - it’s the same bloody food!

When McDs started to reopen their drive thrus in sections in early summer 2020, the nearest one in the first phase was 52 miles away. I do litter wombling (litter picking) and a fellow womble found a receipt from this McDs on the first day of reopening. So this pathetic saddo drove 104 mile round trip to get a burger from the very limited menu.

What’s this bloody fascination with McDs? It’s mediocre food. I only visited McDs when I go with my fussy eater friends. Another time my flight home was delayed by 3 hours and then took 2 hours waiting to get luggage. It was about 2am and bloody starving and that time of day the only thing open is McDs.

You live in Tamworth then OP?

Softycatchymonkeys · 08/08/2024 20:19

Where I live will queue around a roundabout waiting to get in to McDs. Madness

mitogoshi · 08/08/2024 20:19

It's mediocre but reliably mediocre, also useful if you don't want to get out of your car. Ours is busy from 7am until 10pm, it's open 7-10!

supersonicginandtonic · 08/08/2024 20:19

I queued for ages for a drive thru when they first reopened. My son had had his party cancelled, couldn't see his family and all he wanted was a macdonalds but then they closed too, so I promised him I'd take him as soon as they reopened. I did

Ukholidaysaregreat · 08/08/2024 20:20

Haha! Classic MNet totally shut down with first reply. This is a chat forum for a bit of chat. I will say people seem to love McDonald's and given that most of the food is in throw away wrappings and the company is worth millions they should do a bit of local litter picking around the restaurants.

2dogsandabudgie · 08/08/2024 20:20

Withdrawal symptoms?

Bekindtoyourselfandothers · 08/08/2024 20:21

Totally agree with you OP.

I stopped eating burgers many years ago when I read about the cruelty involved in the mass slaughter of animals for the fast food market.
When I did used to have the occasional burger meal there I just didn't find it filling. I was hungry again in and hour or so.

My autistic child with ARFID has McDonald’s chips as one of the very few things he’ll eat. I was so glad when the Drive Thru reopened after Covid and probably would have driven 50 miles for some fries!

bastedyoungturkey · 08/08/2024 20:23

@MultiplaLight I was wondering the same thing

ItsAlrightDarling · 08/08/2024 20:23

I should add I don’t eat it myself, we drive all the way for a single portion of regular fries 🙄

WickieRoy · 08/08/2024 20:24

Seems a bit weird after just 7 weeks, unless they had an offer on to celebrate reopening or something.

I fully understood it after lockdown though, we were all slightly losing our minds at that point and if my DC had been old enough to be distracted and cheered up by a McDonald's drive through there's every chance I would have found myself there! I think it was both something to do and a bit symbolic for some.

OkPedro · 08/08/2024 20:25

I'm laughing at "fellow womble" 😆 first time I have ever heard of this!

But yes op I get it. Some people do seem to be over the top when something reopens. I think that's what it actually is tbh
I like a mcds, probably have it every 6 weeks or so. Always hits the spot.
It's not for everyone 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Softycatchymonkeys
Is that the big McDonald’s in Wandsworth?

SunOnTheRiver · 08/08/2024 20:26

You sound very superior OP, well done you.

There was a story in Scotland years ago, of a MCDs worker coming to the drive through on Xmas day (the restaurant was closed) to ‘hand over’ the fries. This child also ate the fries everyday because it was one of the few things he ate but also it was important that they collected the fries.
I think the parents reheated some put it in a bag, there was some discreet swap and the McDs worker was standing at the end of the drive through, in uniform and handed them back over.

McDs is really important to some kids with SN

Lockdown had many of us grasping at all and any slivers of normality and familiarity

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 08/08/2024 20:37

I hear you Op.

I don't eat them except like you in emergency situations but was very hungover and fancied a very poor food choice. Unfortunately I was doing a "no spend" month and only had £1.40 in coins, which doesn't count.
Desperate I bought one of those appalling Rustlers microwave burgers
fir the time (£1) which comes with cheese and ketchup and added some lettuce and onion at home. Literally no difference in taste between the two ultra processed pieces of junk.
I get why people fancy a nasty cheap burger ( sometimes) but there's so much amazingly cheap, super quick rubbish you can buy. I have no idea why people would choose MacDonalds restaurants either.

No it’s a relatively small McDonald’s in Sussex. Gridlocks the whole bloody town

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/08/2024 20:42

@Twistybranch that's one of the most Christmassy things I've ever heard. Flowers

Eldrick47s · 08/08/2024 20:46

Yeah nice touch with that Christmas story.

That’s lovely 🥰

"So this pathetic saddo drove 104 mile round trip to get a burger from the very limited menu"

What an unpleasant thing to say. You don't even know that someone did drive a hundred mile drive trip for McDonald's. They could have been 50 miles away for lots of different reasons and picked up a McDonalds whilst they were there.

I care about obesity, I care about its impact. I care about some of the way female staff are treated there.

Regarding the re-opened one, I can understand that a new place is somewhere different to visit during a school holiday. For a so-called treat.
