On alternate day fasting - not 16:8 but fasting for 36 hours then eating anything you want for 12 hours. E.g stopping eating at 10pm on Sunday and not eating until 10am on Tuesday. Eat all you want until 10pm and the cycle continues. No calorie counting but essentially cutting calorie intake in half.

Thought about trying it for ages but never in the right headspace. Watched a Michael Mosley doc on Netflix out of respect for the great man and saw him talking about it again (welled up a bit when he was talking about wanting to live longer I must say) then just decided, F IT. I’m doing it.

Age 53. Starting at 18 stone 4. Aching knees and back, swollen ankles, couldn’t go upstairs without needing 5 mins to get my breath back, DC complaining that I’m heavy breathing over them 😳, high cholesterol, high risk for T2 diabetes, high blood pressure also hypothyroidism and deep in menopause,

In just over 4 weeks, I have lost 20lbs. Now 16stone 12. I absolutely love my food on feed days. I thought I would overeat but I don’t. In fact I haven’t got time to eat everything I planned (oohhh, I’ll have you tomorrow kind of thing 😃).

I work out in the gym on feed days so I go every other day instead of pressuring myself to exercise everyday and then not do any at all! I eat chocolate bars, big meals etc. I have started making overnight oats ready the night before feed days which I am loving and really fill me up. Drink tonnes of water etc. I have cut out normal bread and have gluten free instead just because it made me extremely bloated after fasting (wouldn’t have otherwise), gluten free pancakes with syrup too. More natural gravitation to healthy food now.

On fast days, I drink loads (as well as electrolyte water), have coffee with sugar, herbal tea with honey and two milk shakes with protein powder and ground flax seeds for extra nutrition. I will probably switch to fruit and veg smoothies when I get fed up with them but not yet!

I was worried I would be dizzy or have headaches but nothing! First few fast days were hard but now it’s so easy. I look forward to eating the next day and even fasting afterwards when I feel stuffed (!) and think about what I want to eat. I’m not starving when I wake up after fasting either and feel very cleaned out so to speak.

I have a busy household (2 adults - 4 older DC), I WFH, and it works fine. Don’t mind cooking for family as know I can have it tomorrow. Honestly I never thought I’d ever find a diet I’d keep up for more than 2 weeks which was my limit. I can’t keep up with calorie counting or denying myself nice food for months on end, so depressing.

I can see the benefits already to my skin, so much less tired, mental fog lifting, no swollen ankles!, dress size gone from tight 20 to comfy 18. I can almost run upstairs and the difference to how hard I can work out in the gym is amazing in just a month which is due to the fasting IMO. In addition there are internal benefits from fasting which will be adding up. I feel 100 times better than a month ago. I know the weight loss will start to slow down but I expect to reach a reasonably healthy weight before Christmas and can then do occasional fast days if my weight starts creeping up again.

Honestly, I really want to advocate this way of losing weight. It’s not a fad, we are designed for feast and famine. No extra costs, actually save money on fasting days as two shakes cost the equivalent of £2 and I’d easily spend more than that eating 3 meals a day especially if I was getting a cheeky Costa, McDonalds, or Subway for lunch although I can and have had that on feed days!

AIBU to think this is amazing and think more people should try it before resorting to spending hundred of pounds on weight loss injections which can have damaging side effects and are affecting Tyoe 1 diabetics getting life saving medication and equipment for that medication?

Obviously fasting is not for pregnant women or people with contraindicated medical conditions but most people could do it if I can!

Those who've been fasting for a while - have you had any issues with gallstones? The research on fasting is so appealing but the fear of gallstones is strong!

I’ve fasted ten years (24 hour one meal a day) and no health issues whatsoever! :)

theworldsmad · 08/08/2024 12:11

bonzaitree · 08/08/2024 11:44

I feel like I’d go mad on feast days though… McDonald’s breakfast, all you can eat buffet for lunch etc.

I haven't found that to happen though.
Firstly, one can physically only eat so much. Then you've got that after Christmas feeling and can't eat any more.
Secondly, it hasn't happened for me, it's like my stomach says whoah, why you giving me so much, bro? Easy...it's like I'm fuller faster

FarTooFat · 08/08/2024 12:23

Well done OP - keep it up - losing weight is really hard, so finding something that works for you is the best way to achieve it.

I have successfully used fasting for a few years now and get the best results when I fast 3 times a week for 36-42 hours (Mon, Weds and Fri usually). I eat nothing during the fasts and drink only water, black coffee and green tea.

I lose about 1.5 pounds a week - which matches with what Dr Jason Fung says that a full day of fasting equates to about half a pound in fat loss.

I also have to be fairly strict and eat low carb and drink little to no alcohol - otherwise all the fasting does is maintain my weight. (Menopausal, years of yo-yo dieting, wrecked metabolism, insulin resistance).

I really look forward to eating on my fasting days ... and really look forward to fasting on my eating days!

I sometimes take some time off - either purposefully or accidentally - but I have a long way to go (2.5 stone lost, another 6 to go), so regard this as a long-term project. Once I'm happy with my weight, I think OMAD would be my choice as it's good for maintenance and I would be able to stick to that easily.

I'm lucky that I don't have a gallbladder to worry about ... but I lost that many years ago after rapid weight loss. My gallstones came from a low fat / calorie counting diet, so it's not just fasting that causes gallbladder issues, it's any kind of rapid weight loss.

I have much better skin during periods of fasting, and notice that small wounds heal faster, so can attest to the autophagy that fasting brings.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/08/2024 12:26

XlemonX · 08/08/2024 02:45

Well done OP

further down the line you should try to clean fast and only have water on fasting hours to achieve the full effect of autophagy and detoxing.

I am a true believer of OMAD (one meal a day) it works better longterm and I throw in longer fast a few times. That works wonders. My fat just melts off and I become full of energy, skin becomes flawless.

So eating is 'dirty' to you?

Religious purging might have gone out of fashion, but it's certainly been replaced by the diet industry. It's just called 'clean' or 'detox', 'autophagy' and 'flawless' instead of Mortification of the Flesh, these days.

How do you concentrate at work?

@Kipperthedawg , fasting supposedly heightens your powers of concentration.

Nonsense. Maintenance Phase is a pro-Fat Acceptance podcast that spouts misonformation about your “set point” and so on. Bodies are not “programmed” to recover lost weight. If you go back to overeating, you will get fat again. It’s not genetics, it’s caloric intake,

Zoe podcast interviewed Dr Robert Kushner who studies the popular injections like Ozempic he says the science demonstrates set point is a reality. A person can fight it but the body will be doing everything it can to drive up the hunger hormones after weight loss.

ETA - I have just read this article that says the science is less clear.

Well done OP! I very loosely was doing intermittent fasting around 7- 8 years and lost half a stone. I've not been in the headspace to do it in the last 4- 5 years or so, probably due to stress related stuff.
Probably excuses, I used to run a lot which helped to keep weight off but haven't done it much in the last year.
I'm the same age as you and have no will power, have put on a lot of weight.
I commented a couple of months ago on Mumsnet that I have joined Slimpod, have listened and watched videos several times but don't feel it's doing much, I'm probably not spending enough time on it.
I have recently been fasting for 14- 15 hours but its night time that's hard with snacking.
I'm going to start going to gym and classes soon. Any advice gratefully received!

EatStopEat · 09/08/2024 00:44

Well another fast day down today! I’ve been gradually moving my shake times further back. Had first one at 6pm today and last one at 10.30pm. Could have gone without it actually but I want the nutrition.

So I only took a few calories in from a coffee with sugar this morning (also had lemon water, water and electrolyte drink) from 10pm last night to 6pm today which was 20hrs.

I do actually wonder if me having that bit of sugar and honey on fasting days is stopping my blood sugar from crashing so I’m not getting dizziness, headaches etc. Something to think about if people want to do similar fasts.

Finding it so easy now despite making toast for DS’s friend with thick, white toastie bread, that smelled wonderful. That was/is my nemesis but I said to myself I’ll have some tomorrow and it passed. Probably won’t though as got so much other stuff I want to eat that I doubt I’ll fit it all in!

Thank you so much for all the positive responses.

I have tried so many diets in my time. I was a size 6 until I had my first DC at 28 (always very slim and athletic), then jumped up to a size 16. I always think DD broke my thyroid (no grudge held though 😂) as I just ballooned in the last 3 months of pregnancy despite being extremely active and going to the gym still! Had all the hypothyroid symptoms after I had her, horrible dry cracking skin where I had amazing skin before. GP wouldn’t diagnose until 8 years ago when TSH was sky high!

Hoovered between sizes 16 and 20 for the last 25 years. Did cal counting, low carb and fasting diets like Lighter Life, Cambridge but never stuck to them for more than a week or two. I’m just delighted I have tried this and have found it the easiest thing to stick to ever. I actually get excited about all the lovely things I’m going to eat the next day, that makes me want to eat good food as well, not junk.

Not read through the thread but sounds like an eating disorder

AShortName · 09/08/2024 06:37

ImPunbelievable · 08/08/2024 09:21

You need to re-read the OP - it's an extra 24.5 hours not .5 hours!

😬 ah that might do it… will read again!

AuCo44 · 09/08/2024 06:45

I've tried intermittent fasting but I'm a nurse who works 12.5 hour shifts and it's just not compatible with that regime.
You're taking in around 600 calories on 'fast days' so you're not actually eating/drinking nothing but water.
I'm glad it's working for you, but it does concern me that people with eating disorders will get validation from diet regimes like this one.

LemonWater222 · 09/08/2024 06:54

Thank you @EatStopEat

I'm going to give this a try. Will watch the MM documentary too.

So glad this is working for you, please keep us posted and well done!

Beautiful3 · 09/08/2024 08:09

What are you having on fast days? And which version are you doing? I want to try fasting again. I used to get bad headaches.

Seagramsginrocks · 09/08/2024 08:17

EatStopEat · 08/08/2024 02:25

Oh I know but I’m following MM’s fasting regime which allows up to 600 Cals on ‘fasting’ days. I don’t want to get bogged down in carb counting so shakes are easier as don’t have to think about it and still getting some nutrition on fast days. The one I’m using has got iodine in it which I probably never had much of before and omegas in the flax seeds.

I’m not cutting sugar out of coffee and honey out of tea as it would just be miserable and not doable. I’m probably only having a fraction of the sugar (including in carbs) I’d have if I was eating food all day so practically reduced by a half to a third over the course of a week. Not going to stress about that!

.

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 09/08/2024 09:03

@EatStopEat you have prompted me to start this!

Can I ask what your week looks like in terms of fast/non fast days

I'd read that a 36 hr fast should only be once a week?

Yourdemonsyourproblem · 09/08/2024 09:36

You aren't lazy and have self control a lot of people don't.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 09/08/2024 09:59

OP, do you spend any time not thinking about food? You think about not eating/what you're going to eat/what you have eaten? With respect (losing any weight at all when you need to is an achievement), this seems like obsessive behaviour.

Flumpie59 · 09/08/2024 10:16

I'll have to try that! I'm 5'1 and about 17 stone. I can't exercise because of physical disabilities which leave me in horrendous pain 24/7/365 and I'm on a 4- wheeled seated Rollator and a walking stick, also menopausal so that's another reason for having difficulty in losing weight as it actually puts it on!

My weight makes it hard on my disabilities and vise versa, I've tried loads of diets over the years but they either don't actually work or they do but it takes me forever just to lose 1/4 of a stone, it gets really boring going so slow so I just gave up!

But what you've said sounds really sensible so I'm definitely giving it a real proper go! Thanks, EatStopEat !

Footballwidow24 · 09/08/2024 13:00

I'm not the Op but I do alternate day fasting - usually 3 fast days a week. I think about it a lot less than on diets where I record every calorie, weigh food etc. It's very simple! So today, I just don't eat. Tomorrow I eat whatever I want - though I do try to eat more fruit than biscuits obviously. But I don't record anyhing or weigh anything.

CranfordScones · 09/08/2024 13:36

That's wonderful OP. It's great to hear a positive story about someone using a bit of willpower and determination.

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 09/08/2024 14:01

@Footballwidow24 can I ask how you space this out across the week?

Do you stop eating at 10pm one evening and don't start again until til 10am 36 hrs later?

I've started today and trying to understand how best to space this out?

Thanks

Footballwidow24 · 09/08/2024 14:36

@BobVanceVanceRefridgeration i don't think I really manage 36 hours. I stop when I go to bed one day, don't eat the next day, and start when I have breakfast the following day - which can vary between 6 and 9 depending whether I'm at work.
I can do it strictly every other day but often have two "eating" days in a row so I can still eat out, have a weekend off or a bad couple of days at work. I don't do it if I'm sick. I don't do it when away on holiday. Honestly only thing I can stick with after years of dieting.

blubberball · 09/08/2024 14:39

I think that I need to try this

blubberball · 09/08/2024 14:47

How long is the feed window before you start fasting again? Do you eat anything you want in this window?
