On alternate day fasting - not 16:8 but fasting for 36 hours then eating anything you want for 12 hours. E.g stopping eating at 10pm on Sunday and not eating until 10am on Tuesday. Eat all you want until 10pm and the cycle continues. No calorie counting but essentially cutting calorie intake in half.

Thought about trying it for ages but never in the right headspace. Watched a Michael Mosley doc on Netflix out of respect for the great man and saw him talking about it again (welled up a bit when he was talking about wanting to live longer I must say) then just decided, F IT. I’m doing it.

Age 53. Starting at 18 stone 4. Aching knees and back, swollen ankles, couldn’t go upstairs without needing 5 mins to get my breath back, DC complaining that I’m heavy breathing over them 😳, high cholesterol, high risk for T2 diabetes, high blood pressure also hypothyroidism and deep in menopause,

In just over 4 weeks, I have lost 20lbs. Now 16stone 12. I absolutely love my food on feed days. I thought I would overeat but I don’t. In fact I haven’t got time to eat everything I planned (oohhh, I’ll have you tomorrow kind of thing 😃).

I work out in the gym on feed days so I go every other day instead of pressuring myself to exercise everyday and then not do any at all! I eat chocolate bars, big meals etc. I have started making overnight oats ready the night before feed days which I am loving and really fill me up. Drink tonnes of water etc. I have cut out normal bread and have gluten free instead just because it made me extremely bloated after fasting (wouldn’t have otherwise), gluten free pancakes with syrup too. More natural gravitation to healthy food now.

On fast days, I drink loads (as well as electrolyte water), have coffee with sugar, herbal tea with honey and two milk shakes with protein powder and ground flax seeds for extra nutrition. I will probably switch to fruit and veg smoothies when I get fed up with them but not yet!

I was worried I would be dizzy or have headaches but nothing! First few fast days were hard but now it’s so easy. I look forward to eating the next day and even fasting afterwards when I feel stuffed (!) and think about what I want to eat. I’m not starving when I wake up after fasting either and feel very cleaned out so to speak.

I have a busy household (2 adults - 4 older DC), I WFH, and it works fine. Don’t mind cooking for family as know I can have it tomorrow. Honestly I never thought I’d ever find a diet I’d keep up for more than 2 weeks which was my limit. I can’t keep up with calorie counting or denying myself nice food for months on end, so depressing.

I can see the benefits already to my skin, so much less tired, mental fog lifting, no swollen ankles!, dress size gone from tight 20 to comfy 18. I can almost run upstairs and the difference to how hard I can work out in the gym is amazing in just a month which is due to the fasting IMO. In addition there are internal benefits from fasting which will be adding up. I feel 100 times better than a month ago. I know the weight loss will start to slow down but I expect to reach a reasonably healthy weight before Christmas and can then do occasional fast days if my weight starts creeping up again.

Honestly, I really want to advocate this way of losing weight. It’s not a fad, we are designed for feast and famine. No extra costs, actually save money on fasting days as two shakes cost the equivalent of £2 and I’d easily spend more than that eating 3 meals a day especially if I was getting a cheeky Costa, McDonalds, or Subway for lunch although I can and have had that on feed days!

AIBU to think this is amazing and think more people should try it before resorting to spending hundred of pounds on weight loss injections which can have damaging side effects and are affecting Tyoe 1 diabetics getting life saving medication and equipment for that medication?

Obviously fasting is not for pregnant women or people with contraindicated medical conditions but most people could do it if I can!

@EatStopEat
Just to clarify, so you stop eating Sunday at 10pm and eat from 10am Tues. Then from 10pm Tuesday stop eating till 10am till Thursday?

And when you say you stop eating, do you mean you just drink tea, coffees, juice, shakes? You don't eat fruit or anything even raw?

LaurieFairyCake · 08/08/2024 08:59

I've just come on t say how fantastic your regime is, I'm so pleased to hear about your energy levels Flowers

Ohdearyme72 · 08/08/2024 09:05

I do 16/8 7 days a week and excercise every day too. As long as you watch what you eat and still enjoy the occasion treat you'll feel healthier pretty quickly.

Livelovebehappy · 08/08/2024 09:14

I have a slightly different take on this. I eat the bare minimum on work days. Just some fruit for breakfast. A whole meal sandwich lunch. Salad for tea. Then I have a weekend of treats, ie fish and chips, bar of chocolate, pizza. It works well for me, because it has to be a lifestyle thing and sustainable for life. I just couldn’t cut out things I enjoy entirely, so this way I can still look forward to my fave foods without giving them up totally. And not sure I could starve myself for a couple of days, as surely on those days your energy levels both physical and mental will be very low.

ILoveNigelTufnel · 08/08/2024 09:21

Well done @EatStopEat thats brilliant progress!

I tried the 5:2 diet a few years ago and I stuck to it rigidly, made sure I had enough water and I was drinking enough on the fast days but goodness the migraines were awful so I stopped. I’ve been in two minds to start it again but I get hormonal migraines anyway, so I’m worried about causing more issues like that.

I am happy for you, but this doesn’t work for me. I naturally don’t eat from c.9pm until 12:30 the next day (I’m not sure the extra half hour helps?) and I’m still putting on weight. I don’t eat that much in the other hours either 🙁

You need to re-read the OP - it's an extra 24.5 hours not .5 hours!

Cherrysoup · 08/08/2024 09:32

I think it’s the mindset. Like giving up smoking, you need to be on the right headspace. Cooking and thinking you’ll have it tomorrow is strong willed! Well done!

Silverliver · 08/08/2024 09:38

Congrats for finding something that works for you OP and the weight loss.

Just a quick point for anyone else reading that a fast has to be zero calorie (I.e. water only or zero calorie squash or black coffee no sugar). What you're doing currently is alternate VLCD which is clearly working for you so that's great.

I've also lost a lot doing IF - I have an 8hr window from 12-8pm and it works perfectly for me. I'm also not evangelical about it so if I go for breakfast on a weekend or have a drink in the evening it's all fine.

ruffler45 · 08/08/2024 09:42

5 lb a week sounds way to fast a weight loss (from memory i think 1 lb is equivalent to 3500 calories) unless you are burning it off at the gym rather then overall reduction in calories.

Donotneedit · 08/08/2024 09:46

Your posts are so heartwarming OP, well done and good for you!
you might enjoy trying some gentle exercise like a walk or something on an empty stomach, coffee and fasting before exercise boosts the metabolism and you get used to it really quickly, I wouldnt want to exercise after eating any more. And then always have some vitamin C after to mop up the free radicals. This is the advice I got when I was an athlete sometime ago, things may have changed but it’s worked for me over the years.

"Lose" . Sorry someone had to say it!

Menapausemum1974 · 08/08/2024 09:57

@JudyBlumesBlubber maybe try having nothing to eat from 10pm and then waiting until 12pm to eat again. My husband lost weight doing this

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 08/08/2024 10:06

I'm only under a month but I'm liking 16:8 myself. LIke OP, what seems to be happening is not just that I'm eating less calories over all but also that the choices I'm making are different. I just feel like I get fuller a bit quicker and am less likely to WANT to snack. I've just had my period and it was a bit different compared to the previous 2-3 weeks and I definitely wanted more food, but considering that usually I have a full week where I'm eating everything in sight, I still see a difference between how I ate this month on my period vs usually.

We've also had lots going on because of holidays and family and friends visiting so I haven't always been able to be militant about 16 hours but I'm okay with that as it feels like an overall lifestyle change, but one where if I need to be a bit flexible, I can. So far I've lost about 6 pounds. Will be interesting to weigh myself today after my period.

What about 0 calories fizzy drinks ie coke zero? Fruit teas? Would these be allowed on fast days?

AFAIK anything zero calorie is fine. Obviously there are then other questions about diet choice around UPFs

Actually not. Have you heard of brain fog? People sometimes fast before a big interview or something to eliminate brain fog.
Fasting makes your mind sharp for some reason!

Flightsoffancy · 08/08/2024 10:38

Congratulations! Sounds like you've made a really positive change. I'm currently having a low calorie diet, combined with Huel, which is working well. I'm on school holidays at the moment and it's much more bearable than when I'm working. I get so tired and hungry during term time that any kind of dieting is extremely tough, impossible really. I'm hoping that my body will get used to fewer calories and make it easier to cope when term begins again, but my hopes aren't high. At least I might be able to maintain what I've lost, even if I can't lose any more until next holiday!

poppymango · 08/08/2024 10:40

I've never done the type of intermittent fasting you're doing, but I did the 5:2 and really really recommend it. I'm trying to do OMAD at the moment, and I have a similar experience to you - I love actually being properly hungry when I eat my meals, I love planning what I'm going to have but strangely I never overeat and do tend to gravitate towards more healthy food. I am tempted to try what you're doing though as you sound really happy and full of energy! I will be watching the Netflix documentary too. Lovely to hear a success story 🙂

Somethingsnappy · 08/08/2024 10:52

Well done op! That's absolutely fantastic! I haven't read the whole thread yet, but will do.

I also know what you mean. I started intermittent fasting 3 months ago (16:8, but I often go for 17 or 18 hours in reality) and I've been delighted too. I totally understand the point you are making about how it works mentally. Because you're not restricting any particular foods, you don't get the same cravings. You simply follow one rule. .. the timings. You can still enjoy food and look forward to it the rest of the time. I'm finding it easy for the same reasons. It's the only 'diet' that I feel I am capable of doing long term... Forever potentially.

I want to lose 3 stone to get back to my pre baby days weight of ten years ago, and I've lost a stone so far. It's slow, a couple of pounds a month, but I'm delighted with the progress, and already am wearing dresses and lovely clothes that I hadn't felt good in before. I'm quite fit anyway, despite being overweight as I walk and swim a lot, so haven't noticed fitness levels altering particularly yet, but I just feel so much more confident, looking better and taking control.

Well done again! Keep it up! Great time to do it too, to cut your risk of health issues arising in your 50s and 60s.

BigDahliaFan · 08/08/2024 11:06

It's not so much the losing weight it's the keeping it off....

bonzaitree · 08/08/2024 11:44

I feel like I’d go mad on feast days though… McDonald’s breakfast, all you can eat buffet for lunch etc.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 08/08/2024 11:57

I'm definitely going to read up on that OP! Even if it slows down and no longer suits you, you've gotten the ball rolling. The first couple of weeks of weight loss for a heavy person are so daunting people don't even start. Once you feel the benefit of being lighter that's motivation in itself to keep going. Or if you were slim previously. But when you have always been overweight on some level it's hard to know what that energetic feeling is.

I feel weirdly that eating makes me hungrier. I can go long enough periods without food but as soon as I eat I get intense cravings and then snack on and off until the next meal. I have been monitoring it and certain foods trigger this reaction, some don't. So I feel I would be a good candidate for this type of regime.

lemarr · 08/08/2024 11:59

Fasting is amazing OP I agree, I have fasted for a decade, lost weight initially and now maintain it without ever really changing my weight by more than a couple pounds. I do not track any calories, and I eat as much as I like (one meal a day, 24 hour fast). It is stress free and suits me perfectly.
