Wondering how we can all stand behind & support minorities in this climate.

It is horrendous that there is a climate of fear and that all this far right terrorism is taking place.

are there ways for the general public to give support to minorities who are being targetted?

Can we please stop calling these actions protests? They aren't. They are riots.

kikisparks · 06/08/2024 08:21

FFS some people think a thread about supporting minorities in this climate is a good place to spout “poor little me I’m accused of being a thug”. If you see people being dragged out of cars, punched, having their workplaces and buildings burnt down, their businesses looted, stuff thrown at them etc and your disgust isn’t reserved for the perpetrators but is for the people calling out the perpetrators, then I think you need to re-examine your bias.

If your empathy is not for those people left in real fear by the actions of these rioters, but instead you think “poor little me, I am also far right in my beliefs and I’m being brandished with the same brush as these thugs”, then maybe you can find another thread to post about that.

Popp1ngCandy · 06/08/2024 08:24

So the far right get to broadcast their opinion inflicting violence and racism onto communities whilst everybody else has to just shuffle along just smiling and being polite.

No thanks. I would like to do a little more than what I do anyway. I’d like to be heard and also to contribute to making it clear that such hideous views are part of a minority.

Fifferfefferfeff · 06/08/2024 08:25

During Brexit there was a ribbon or badge you could wear to show you were ready to support someone if they were being harrassed on public transport for being from the EU. Perhaps we need something like that now.

(I came on here to find ways to support people who are, understandably, scared. Am ignoring the hijacker comments.)

I'm disgusted that people like myself are given the label of being 'far right'.

Yes, there's been some horrendous riots by low lives who want nothing more than to cause trouble, and I don't condone their actions for one second. They should be arrested and locked up for their violence. I think 99% of people would think the same.

BUT, they represent a tiny tiny minority of people who are trying to get the Government to acknowledge people's concerns about the illegal immigrants being allowed into the Country. (They just go about it the wrong way)
Most protesters wish to protest in peace, yet, because of the troublemakers, everyone is being labelled as thugs. Why?

Why won't the Government address the real concerns of the people? Why are certain groups allowed to wield knives and machetes in public without intervention by the Police?
It's all wrong.

I'm curious what 'people like you' covers. Being against illegal immigration? Being indirectly racist to anyone different to you? Being directly racist to anyone different to you? Seeking out people different to you to threaten them? Seeking out people different to you to physically assault them?

Or were you one of the people busily smashing in shop fronts to steal bath bombs and chucking fireworks and bricks at police, antifascists and people different to you because that will show them?

SoManyTshirts · 06/08/2024 08:28

I hope I’m nice and polite to everybody. I also stood in support of the anti-racism protest yesterday. I was there for two and a half hours and our side was peaceful (if noisy) all that time. Lots of grannies, trade unionists, Pride T-shirts, 20-somethings. We aren’t thugs.

I agree that immigration should be controlled, and that newcomers in any area should make the effort to integrate. I may have unintentionally offended members of other ethnic groups from time to time. However, I believe it’s necessary to stand against violence, discrimination, and the destruction of our peace and our public realm.

reallytimetodeclutter · 06/08/2024 08:05

The killer of those poor girls was not, it seems, an illegal immigrant. So hijacking that horrific incident to "protest" against illegal immigration is pretty disgusting.

I'm also disgusted and ashamed that people are (not unreasonably) frightened about the violent gangs on the rampage.

You say you are disgusted that "people like you" are being called far right, which suggests you've been on one of these protests. I think that this hatred is being stirred up by people who do NOT have the UK's best interests in mind. So if you've joined in with them (even "peacefully") then - at best - you're a mug.

Even if you haven't joined in, but just sympathise with the "cause" then this thread isn't for you. It's for people who would like to find ways to stand in solidarity with our neighbours who are feeling unsafe - something you clearly are not prioritising right now.

Back to the actual topic: Dazed have done an article here: www.dazeddigital.com/life-culture/article/64297/1/resist-far-right-violence-in-the-uk-racism-islamophobia?amp=1

I know he isn't an illegal immigrant, but the protests were started initially because of false information spread around social media claiming that he was.
Like I said, I completely disagree with thugs rioting, their actions are enabling the Government to tar all protesters with the same brush unfairly.

I've not been involved in any protest myself, but I agree with protesting ONLY if it's done peacefully. Take out the thugs, the violence and the criminal damage, how else do you think the concerned people of this Country could get the Government to listen?
There's always peaceful protests from people from all walks of life, do you not think that people who disagree with the influx of illegal immigrants into this Country have a right to protest? Again, I said only peacefully is acceptable though.

My opinion doesn't make me a 'mug' as you put it, it makes me someone whose very concerned for my Country. You say it's about standing in solidarity with people who feel unsafe, but I feel unsafe, and so do I believe the majority of the population.

Unsafe that we've no clue as to the identity of literally THOUSANDS of people who've come into this Country and who do not want to integrate with us, for a start.

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 08:33

Follow Stand Up to Racism on twitter and Facebook. Every time there are far right protests planned, they organise a counter protest. I attended one at the weekend. I can't emphasise enough the power of numbers. We overpowered the far right simply by being there in greater numbers than them. They retreated in humiliation. If there had been more of them, this wouldn't have happened. It send a very powerful message to the right that we are greater than them and won't tolerate them. It also sends a powerful message to ethnic minorities that we stand with them. Don't worry about getting hurt. There was a dense wall of police between us and them. They couldn't get anywhere near us.

lunar1 · 06/08/2024 08:33

The way things could be better, for the community here on Mumsnet that we are all a part of, is for the endless minimising of racism by white people to be called out every single time.

A zero tolerance to racism here would be a good start, it's not patronising and it would help make everyone feel it was a forum for them.

How offer do we see white people on here telling people 'they wouldn't be offended by that' or it's not racism, you're just over sensitive.

Just last night a now deleted thread minimised the achievements of every black, brown, mixed student at university as box ticking, and that mixed children like mine, who have never lived anywhere else didn't count to the 'indigenous population'

We could improve things in a very real way by standing up every single time the real life experiences of Black, Brown and mixed ethnicity posters are diminished, because a random white women 'wouldn't have a problem with that'

I'm NOT at all racist, and it's vile of you to claim I am.

Just because I don't agree with illegal immigrants coming into the Country, this doesn't make me racist. I disagree with ILLEGAL immigrants because we don't know who they are and their history. Where are all the women and children? Why is it just young men mainly coming in?
And also, how many times have I written that I do NOT agree with violence?

Yet you completely disregard what I've written, just like some other ignorant posters. Go away!

I'll leave this thread now, Too many posters are blinkered and wrongfully accuse others of things we are not.
It seems you can't have a reasoned debate without being falsely accused of racism and siding with violent thugs. Ignorance at its finest.

I didn't claim anything. I asked for clarity on what 'people like you' meant and gave examples of what it might mean as you said you had been unfairly labelled as 'far right'. But you've escalated to calling me disgusting and stupid instead of just clarifying.

Meadowfinch · 06/08/2024 08:56

By carrying on as normal. By treating everyone in the way I would like to be treated myself, with courtesy & respect.

Quiet, unfussy solidarity. If I was in their situation, that is what I'd prefer.

Actually, scrap that, you clarified your position by your use of 'these people'.

Ignoring any violence by anyone who is white.

Doesn't really answer the question from OP does it really?
How can we support people in our community who may be afraid due to their skin colour?
You took that as an invitation to justify the actions of these morons who are rioting
Maybe start a thread about how concerned you are about illegal immigration and "certain groups" rather than pollute this one

Tonkerbea · 06/08/2024 09:09

I know you mean well OP, but I'm hoping there are plenty of black and brown people on Mumsnet, me included. Words matter, what can we all do to oppose racism and support cohesion in our communities might have been a better way to phrase it? However ,thank you for the intention and I'm going to follow Stand Up to Racism thanks to PPs suggestion.

Cornflakes44 · 06/08/2024 09:09

@Milkyway1213 do you truly believe that the police put less effort into policing black and brown people as that's what I think you're suggesting. All the evidence suggests the opposite is true. If you choose to ignore the evidence and make negative assumptions about black people the only conclusion is you are racist.
