Phrases you hate

Mine is ‘buttery soft’…If you haven’t come across this phrase, it is mainly used when describing leggings or other clothes, but now I’ve even seen it being used to describe gold jewellery! Also butter isn't that soft…Margariney soft doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.. Anyone else?

There’s a radio ad where a bloke sings about ‘picky bits’ and I want to smash his face in.

It's the Ocado ad. So irritating. I have to turn it down when it comes on (every 5 minutes...)😠

Or ‘Bathe’ in case you go into the bathroom and need a visual reminder of why you’re there.

😂

BrioNotBiro · 05/08/2024 22:24

The patronising "No?", when ending a sentence.

And starting it with "Look,..."
Always a clue as to what's coming next...so condescending 😶

Boobing the baby, the baby wants boob etc
Saying something is “a bit off”
”Cherry toms” for tomatoes or “jack pots” for jacket potatoes

I've only ever heard the expression boobing on threads about what people don't like.
I've never actually heard anyone say it

SmileLady · 06/08/2024 10:22

In all fairness.
Let's connect
Can we triangulate.

I work with a woman who is not actually qualified to do the job we do (she got promoted through the organisation due to longevity). And she uses all this awful jargon to do with the vocation. That annoyed me. So job specific jargon and abbreviations. I hate it. I prefer simple English.

LoobyDoop2 · 06/08/2024 10:23

“What do we think of….?”

It’s just so pathetic. Form your own opinion, or say that you don’t know enough about it to have an opinion, but don’t try and co-opt everyone else into some kind of hive mind.

ElephantilonZed · 06/08/2024 10:25

Neurospicy. 🤮🤮🤮 I'm autistic and it's disgusting.

BlueBellsArePretty · 06/08/2024 10:28

LlynTegid · 06/08/2024 10:33

Not keen on gentle reminders. If people are poor at deadlines, deal with the individuals concerned. A thank you to those who have met a deadline and just a reminder to others is all that is needed.

We had one who wanted a gentle reminder about not scheduling meetings over lunchtime. Which in my opinion should have been a request not to unintentionally discriminate against people who have a hidden condition that means meals at set times.

ElephantilonZed · 06/08/2024 10:41

🤮Mama [of 4]
🤮Answering a question with "So..." or "Yeah... So..."

SilkFloss · 05/08/2024 21:41

One on one.
It's a fucking RATIO, so one TO one.

There are so many of these that I probably shouldn't start. This one - though I agree it's irritating - isn't a ratio. The derivation is from sport - mostly basketball. It's jargon for 'one versus one'.

PointsSouth · 06/08/2024 10:48

Heritage tomatoes.

I mean, what?

BeNavyCrab · 06/08/2024 10:50

What's wrong with you? Such a horrible phrase people/partners use when they notice you are upset.

”lived experience” and the alternative is?

PointsSouth · 06/08/2024 11:09

redalex261 · 06/08/2024 10:59

”lived experience” and the alternative is?

Also 'human error'. There is no other kind of error. Computers, for instance, never error. They do exactly what they are told.

'Human error' is used when it's not possible for an organisation to pretend there wasn't a fuck-up, but they rather hope everyone will be forgiving of it.

See also 'we are where we are' (we fucked up) but 'lessons have been learned' (we can see that we fucked up) 'and now we need to move forward (and we don't want to talk about it).

OrangeFurever · 06/08/2024 15:59

Finding your tribe. Just read it on another thread and it reminded me

Gallowayan · 06/08/2024 16:04

This too shall pass.

SinnerBoy · 06/08/2024 16:12

RabbitsRock · Yesterday 22:02

Pack lunch instead of packed
Mash potato instead of mashed
Today I saw “ corn beef”

"Grill cheese," meaning grilled cheese sandwich.

What ever happened to the proper form of verbs?

SinnerBoy · 06/08/2024 16:13

And "baby daddy / baby mama" can FOAD.
