Should I cancel going to London?

Supposed to be going to London this weekend with DM to watch a show, staying for one night. Are there currently riots in London or is it likely to have stopped by the weekend? Our hotel is very close to the Tower of London not sure if that makes any difference.

OP posts:

Maybe avoid a weekend away and a show at the Sunderland empire for a couple of days but there is literally no unrest in London.

time2changeCharlieBrown · 05/08/2024 20:53

I’d go as pp have said the riots could happen anywhere.

OlympicsFanGirl · 05/08/2024 21:44

I'm just back from London.

No problems.

Iamuhtredsonofuhtred · 05/08/2024 21:48

I’m in Tower hamlets right now. It smells of weed but definitely no riots

viques · 05/08/2024 21:48

The Tower of London will be very safe, all those Yeoman Warders are probably itching to have a go at thugs using some of the sharp shiny weapons they have sitting in the armoury.

Zanatdy · 05/08/2024 21:49

I was in town last night at the theatre and currently it’s fine. But who knows what will be happening by Saturday, I believe there’s a list on social media of locations they are targeting. I’d make the decision closer to the weekend.

Are you stirring for Nigel or Tommy?

MargotEmin · 05/08/2024 21:58

If anything there's quite a positive atmosphere here at the moment

I'm about 5 minutes away from where a "riot" happened in London (Whitechapel) and didn't notice.

There was a riot in Whitechapel? Seems to have gone largely unnoticed, when was that?!

Ringpeace · 05/08/2024 22:08

Divebar2021 · 05/08/2024 18:17

Errrr City of London police seriously don’t have the chops to quell any riot.

They had the "chops" to quell the student protests and the climate change protests very... enthusiastically. I was there.

Although a bunch of young students and a few hippies are a lot easier to take on than semi-retired footy hooligans.

I'm often in Whitechapel (including last Saturday and today) and I didn't see anything either?

BeaRF75 · 05/08/2024 22:18

No! Don't be so ridiculous. London is a city of millions of people, who are all going about their lives completely normally.
What is the matter with people who see a few idiots throwing stones on the TV and assume that a town or city is some sort of post-apocalyptic no go area? Please, folks, just use your common sense.

MadameMassiveSalad · 05/08/2024 22:23

The riots are mainly in the North and the Midlands.
London is peaceful op.

ThinWomansBrain · 05/08/2024 22:29

haven't heard about anything in London, apart from a small demonstration near Downing Street last week.
There was a biggish march in Brixton when I was on my way home the other evening - something to do with anti-colonialism I think. Was slightly alarmed when I heard the noise coming towards me & couldn't see what was happening - as it got closer it all seemed very jolly and carnival like.

the only thing I'd be worried about is maybe stuff kicking off at the Notting Hill carnival - but that's west London.

Whitewolf2 · 05/08/2024 20:46

We visited the Tower of London with our young dc yesterday, it was a lovely day out, no signs of any issues. Given that area is so touristy I’d imagine it wouldn’t be a popular area for riots, not many interesting shops to loot there!

I was fascinated that in the 2011 riots, I was working in Chelsea - all the shops around Knightsbridge untouched, they closed early, but no trouble at all - and rioters were looting crappy places like shoezone and JD sports in Edmonton.

LondonLovie · 05/08/2024 23:10

Honestly it’s all fine. In fact Brixton is probably one of the safest places in the country right now, there is no sodding way we are going to put up with the racist bullshit of the EDL!

RedRosie · 06/08/2024 08:50

Please do come!

It might feel counter-intuitive if you don't live here or don't know London well/visit regularly, just because it's so big. I do understand this, as some of my own out of London family feel that way. But on the whole it is a very safe place. There are often protests (peaceful and occasionally less peaceful) but that's because the government is here and people want to be seen and heard. You can easily avoid them. We've not had anything like the upsetting issues other UK towns and cities have had this time around, and I don't think we will.

faffadoodledo · 06/08/2024 08:55

I think it's notable that in such a large city which is multicultural and had vast differences in wealth that so far there has been no trouble.

I wonder why. Weirdly more cohesive? more opportunities? Better policing and intelligence? Full of people who have moved there purposely rather having been 'stuck' for generations? Better schools (I think this is true - massive investment in schools in London in the late 90s and early noughts when I was there)? I don't know. But it's interesting.

Oneearringlost · 06/08/2024 08:58

I'm planning on going to London this weekend ( I was brought up in London).
My 94 year old mother goes into Holborn/Picadilly Circus twice weekly to groups from Barnet. ( UN for the 3rd Age).
It's fine.
I went 2 days ago to Finsbury Park ( plenty of Mosques and v diverse), again, completely fine.

Polarnight · 06/08/2024 09:01

Why do some non-Londoners think the streets are like a perpetual war zone.

It's bizarre! But I'm.glad it deters people from coming. My home city is crowded enough.

TheMousePipes · 06/08/2024 09:07

We’re going to London next week and there are no plans to cancel here - I think we’ll be safer in London than at home!

2sisters · 06/08/2024 09:10

I've taken my kids into London several times in the last week and haven't had any issues. Although be mindful of your belongings because pickpockets are out in force.
