Should I cancel going to London?

Supposed to be going to London this weekend with DM to watch a show, staying for one night. Are there currently riots in London or is it likely to have stopped by the weekend? Our hotel is very close to the Tower of London not sure if that makes any difference.

Is this a TAAT?

😂

JADS · 05/08/2024 17:54

There were a Palestine march on Saturday and there people protesting outside the Nigerian embassy, but no riots. You will be fine.

twopercent · 05/08/2024 17:56

If all the rioters in the entire country gathered on the green outside the tower of London you would walk past without thinking there were more people there than normal

Allfur · 05/08/2024 17:21

The tower of london is the gathering spot

😂
@bouncingboundless I was 2 miles from a Riot this weekend, and heard nothing, despite being in the ''Zone'' where police had extra powers.

You will be fine.

These "riots" are tiny. A few hundred people going round the country in circles

Rentamob. 🎯

bouncingboundless · 05/08/2024 18:11

Thanks everyone, thought I was being silly but just wanted to check. I lived in the centre of Birmingham at university during the 2011 riots and it was horrific, people walking around openly with knives etc and shops around where we lived being set alight so it's put me on edge since then.

I've been in London all day. Why would you seriously think you'd be at risk of rioting and let it affect your plans?

oakleaffy · 05/08/2024 18:14

Immemorialelms · 05/08/2024 17:22

Less likely to have riots in London because it hasn't been systematically disadvantaged for 40 years, people have jobs, and we also see the point of multicultural life here.

That's so true.
I watched the Rotherham riot {a small part} on video yesterday and the poverty and general vibe is totally different.

A great shame, as it was once a proud steel making area.

Doveyouknow · 05/08/2024 18:14

I am in east London and it's fine here. London is huge so your chances of coming across anything are pretty low. Even when there have been issues like clashes between the far right and the Palestine protesters they are confined to a small area and have no impact on most of the city. Enjoy your visit!

Divebar2021 · 05/08/2024 18:17

Errrr City of London police seriously don’t have the chops to quell any riot.

TheOGCCL · 05/08/2024 18:20

Definitely no need to change your plans. Even if a riot broke out in front of you, which it wouldn’t, without warning, you would just walk away to another area. Plenty of London to go round. Not that I think they will get much traction in London which has voted in a Muslim mayor yet again.

Mummadeze · 05/08/2024 17:41

Am in South West London and thought all the riots are up North? Not seen or heard anything around here

What, up North? Hampstead you mean?

Must be. I'm in Islington ATM and no sign of any riots, although I saw a mild skirmish in Waitrose over some yellow stickered chard.

Thepeopleversuswork · 05/08/2024 18:27

I actually think London is probably the city in the UK which is least likely to have rioting. Particularly if you are in central areas.

FlamingWheelieBinofDespair · 05/08/2024 18:28

I’d definitely go. Just keep your eye on the news.

LakelandDreams · 05/08/2024 18:28

Don't be ridiculous. Are you normally this anxious and timid OP?

Cattery · 05/08/2024 18:31

Im in SE London. All as quiet as it usually is. Don’t think “rioters” would be fighting outside a theatre.

Polyp0 · 05/08/2024 18:36

You've been on edge since 2011?

Rorpethy · 05/08/2024 18:37

I don't know why the op is getting grief, I think it's perfectly reasonable to question if the capital city would have a planned riot after what's been happening in other cities.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/08/2024 18:37

No riots in London!

On the contrary. I’m in London and people in work have been saying “I feel safe in my London bubble” whilst worrying about the riots in other parts in the UK.

Thank you. Most comments have been informative but some people, as always, are just wanting to be rude.

I live in London and feel perfectly safe. If the rentamob crowd tried to protest near the Tower of London they would get shut down quickly because it is so near the financial district, Bank etc.
The weather's lovely, lots of tourists enjoying London.

TheSquareMile · 05/08/2024 18:49

You will be fine, honestly.

There's been nothing said locally in the EC/E areas about anything to worry about this weekend.
