Amazon delivery driver came into my house

I was laying on the sofa earlier watching tv, I had a notification that my Amazon parcel had been delivered.

I thought it was strange that I hadn’t heard anyone knock the door, I went to check the garden for the parcel and as I walked into the dining room I could see the parcel on the dining table.

It really creeped me out that the delivery driver came into my house, he/ she would’ve seen and heard the tv on, I cant understand why they didn’t knock the door or just throw the parcel into the house from the open door, there really wasn’t any need to come into the house.

I’m home alone this evening so I’m probably thinking about this differently than if there were others in the house with me, but its left me feeling really uneasy.

I’m thinking of reporting it to Amazon.

AIBU - it was a normal thing for the driver to do

IANBU - its weird that they came into my house

rubbish sketch of where I was, and where the parcel was left is attached, also where the parcel was placed on the table, the driver would’ve definitely have had to come into the house, there was no way it would’ve been where it was from being thrown in or them reaching from the door.

just report it?

Shiningout · 04/08/2024 21:36

Well of course report it to amazon, obviously a delivery driver should not be entering your house.

HappiestSleeping · 04/08/2024 21:36

Is your front door unlocked?

Surprisedmystified · 04/08/2024 21:38

Well I live by myself and if that happened to me OP it would really freak me out.
I would actually report it.
In fact the driver is putting himself in an unsafe position because he could be accused of doing anything - e.g. stealing, causing damage - whilst in someone's house unannounced.

Sendnudes · 04/08/2024 21:39

It gets posted on here all the time. They've opened my front door and stuck it in the porch too. Its pretty weird but seems common.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 04/08/2024 21:42

It amazes me how many times this gets posted.
I've lived in a few houses at my grand old age. I've never lived in a house where a front door didn't lock when it was shut.
I've only ever known one person whose door stayed unlocked. Is it really this common?

Persiancouscous · 04/08/2024 21:42

Lock your door if you are that worried in future?

ApplesonTuesdays · 04/08/2024 21:43

Was your front door open?

Putting it in the porch isn’t weird if the porch is unlocked. It’s not like it’s your actual front door.

Are you living in the dark ages of Yale locks? Most doors do not lock unless you lock them.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 04/08/2024 21:45

Did they have to open the door (ie it was unlocked) or was it wide open already?

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 04/08/2024 21:47

What do you mean? I’ve only ever had Yale locks in the last 5 houses I’ve lived in.

Gunz · 04/08/2024 21:47

The only way Amazon could enter my house is if the front door was unlocked. If its a double glazed front door - it needs to be double locked. OP if Amazon can get in to your house so can Burgalars!

Yes and these dont exist in most houses build since say 1950 onwards. It used to be mortice and lever but since 90's they're all Euro style locks.

I've never seen a front door that didn't lock when it shuts. Yale or no Yale.

Ohmydreams · 04/08/2024 21:50

Did they post a photo of where they delivered it to? Otherwise potentially your word against amazon...

ThankFitsFriday · 04/08/2024 21:50

My back door was unlocked, that shouldn’t justify a delivery driver coming into the house though. If I was posting here saying that I’d been burgled, but had left the door unlocked then I’d know that I was to blame.

I haven’t seen the other posts about the same thing happening to others so didn’t realise that it’s quite common.

I will report it, I just wasn’t sure if I was making a big deal about nothing.

My front door locks automatically when I shut it and so does my mother's. Neither of them are Yale locks. (Can be opened without a key from the inside, but not from the outside.)

But the answer to these threads is always the same - if you don't want the postie/the Amazon delivery driver/the milkman/a burglar entering your house, lock your doors!

BearFacedCheek · 04/08/2024 21:51

Surely you lock your door then no-one - Amazon driver, burglar, or any other unwanted guest - can enter your house?

Really? I have a 9 year old house, the front door doesn’t lock when it shuts, same for other houses round here.

I disagree, I shouldn’t have to lock the door for them not to come in.. they just shouldn’t come in!! It’s way overstepping the mark and totally unnecessary, leave the parcel / milk / whatever it is outside.

With the uPVC doors unless you lock them then yep, anyone can walk in

Although I do of course agree about locking the doors to stop burglars coming in!

Exactly. For all modern euro/cylinder locks you need to lift the handle. This activates the 3 or 5 point locking mechanism you need for most insurance policies.

Other than Yales ive no idea what mechanisms lock themselves.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 04/08/2024 21:55

My doors don't lock on shutting, have to be locked with a key. Not had a Yale lock in years
