Amazon delivery driver came into my house

ThankFitsFriday · 04/08/2024 21:34

I was laying on the sofa earlier watching tv, I had a notification that my Amazon parcel had been delivered.

I thought it was strange that I hadn’t heard anyone knock the door, I went to check the garden for the parcel and as I walked into the dining room I could see the parcel on the dining table.

It really creeped me out that the delivery driver came into my house, he/ she would’ve seen and heard the tv on, I cant understand why they didn’t knock the door or just throw the parcel into the house from the open door, there really wasn’t any need to come into the house.

I’m home alone this evening so I’m probably thinking about this differently than if there were others in the house with me, but its left me feeling really uneasy.

I’m thinking of reporting it to Amazon.

AIBU - it was a normal thing for the driver to do

IANBU - its weird that they came into my house

rubbish sketch of where I was, and where the parcel was left is attached, also where the parcel was placed on the table, the driver would’ve definitely have had to come into the house, there was no way it would’ve been where it was from being thrown in or them reaching from the door.

It amazes me how many times this gets posted.
I've lived in a few houses at my grand old age. I've never lived in a house where a front door didn't lock when it was shut.
I've only ever known one person whose door stayed unlocked. Is it really this common?

I’ve lived in 5 places, only 1 of them locked when the door shut.

Are you living in the dark ages of Yale locks? Most doors do not lock unless you lock them.

I’ve never had a door without a Yale lock either, and can’t think if anyone I know whose door doesn’t ‘automatically’ lock with a Yale lock from the inside. Only exception I can think of is DHs late gran who was very old school and never locked up as house was always open for many visitors to pop in.

Still not right for delivery driver to enter house though.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 04/08/2024 22:38

Lock your door if you don't want intruders. Simple.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 04/08/2024 22:40

@ThankFitsFriday

That is majorly weird and creepy af. I have never known ANY delivery driver do anything like this - ever. Pop it in the porch, or through a little gap in the front or side door into the hallway (if the door is ajar.) But opening the front door, and walking into the house and through the hallway to your lounge, and putting in on the table behind you when you were on the couch lying down?! Really?! I don't want to 'victim blame' but FGS lock the door when you're in.

@HappiestSleeping

I've never seen a front door that didn't lock when it shuts. Yale or no Yale.

You have lead a very sheltered life. Most doors don't lock when you shut them! 🙄

HappiestSleeping · 04/08/2024 22:28

I don't think I've ever heard of a day time burglary where someone was in their house

Don't move to London then. 😞

I realise my wording wasn't as clear as it should have been, I meant I haven't heard of it in my village, obviously I know it happens

TaylorSwish · 04/08/2024 22:42

It Is just me that giggled at the diagram 😂 Thank you OP.

Sendnudes · 04/08/2024 22:43

Sneak in burglaries are very common where they want your car keys or handbag or whatever else is near the door. Happens UK wide.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 04/08/2024 22:43

It was strange of delivery driver...but...Where I grew up in the countryside in the 90's, an unlocked door was an invite to come in. These were more trusting times and this has since changed. Perhaps delivery driver is foreign and its a different etiquette to where he is from or what he is used to.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 04/08/2024 22:46

Please don't leave your front door unlocked - I know a few people who have been burgled while they were upstairs during the day because they left their doors unlocked - insurance didn't pay out either.

NoisyDenimShaker · 04/08/2024 22:47

That is AWFUL. I can't believe he barged into your house like that. Was he casing the joint or something? I think you should complain asap. Like now. I would be totally creeped out by that.

DreamW3aver · 04/08/2024 22:10

If I had a door that locked itself I'd buy a new door, me and my family go in a new out of the front door probably 50 times or even more a day, it would be completely unworkable if the door was locked all the time.

I wouldn't mind if a delivery person pops a parcel in the hall, they dont as they mostly need a signature or photo but obviously it depends where you live, I'm semi rural and I don't think I've ever heard of a day time burglary where someone was in their house

That’s the thing about latch doors, you just put them ‘on the latch’ (push or slide the button to keep the latch unlocked) and come in and out fifty times. But when you are alone in the house and worried about strangers walking in for example you can have it locked.

Aliceglass · 04/08/2024 22:52

Well, if your sketch is anything to go by, maybe he saw you on the sofa and thought you might be dead 😬

Sendnudes · 04/08/2024 22:57

Actually Ive just remembered my old postie used to carry a gas meter key and if you were out and he had a parcel that didnt fit through your letter box but did fit in the gas meter box, he used to wedge it in there if you werent home. Pissed me right off I had to tell him to stop.

I would say the opposite. Since the 70s, I've seen hundreds, and fitted many too.

Hiddenmnetter · 04/08/2024 22:59

Generally for a door to latch and not be openable without a key from the outside then the external handle has to be disconnected from the barrel, or you have a traditional style night latch/deadbolt.

uPVC/aluminium/timber modern doors that have a multipoint locking system can exist in both varieties- it depends on how the lock was installed.

lifting the handle to actually turn the key and prevent doors from being opened (either side) is when they’re “locked” but you can have modern doors that pull closed, and aren’t openable without a key from the outside.

User364837 · 04/08/2024 23:00

My 1980s front door has to be locked manually with the key if I want it locked. There’s no snib or latch or anything.

Demonhunter · 04/08/2024 23:02

Not the point of the post but love that you drew yourself lying on the sofa hahaha.

Sendnudes · 04/08/2024 21:48

Yes and these dont exist in most houses build since say 1950 onwards. It used to be mortice and lever but since 90's they're all Euro style locks.

I have no idea what a euro style lock is but our door shuts and locks for security, makes one very careful about getting locked out if you nip to the bin! Door is 15 years old. Looking back all out doors have shut and looked.

I love the word snib. It’s not used enough.
our door locks automatically then you double lock it when you leave but you should never double lock when inside. I’ve never got the hang of those lift handle ones, my Mum had one and I was always wrestling with it.

I can only assume you guys have some high quality doors! The industry standard ones are known as a cylinder or "euro" lock, fitted as standard to practically every new build or any replacement door for the past 40 years or so. I suspect you must be specifying a higher quality kit.

Our front door is never locked once we are up and about.
Amazon/yodel etc usually come up my drive and open front and internal door and leave parcel in the hall.
It's never bothered me tbh.

According to your drawing you were laying right next to the room where he walked in. How did you not hear him open the door and come in?

Curiousto · 04/08/2024 23:22

EmberAsh · 04/08/2024 22:34

There was a thread a few weeks ago about a 'post person' and it was completely batshit. The majority said that delivery people had the right to walk into your house if the door was unlocked and you should be grateful you got your parcel rather than feel your privacy had been invaded. Interesting that the vote option on this thread is skewed heavily the other way.

My exact thought.

The contrast between the two threads is a surprise. Maybe a different crowd on an August Sunday night compared to a June weekday daytime?

Catza · 04/08/2024 22:02

I must be the only person who tapes the note on the door saying “I am working and can’t’ come to the door. Please pop the parcel inside. The giant dog just wants smooches”.

You're absolutely not, I used to. Now I don't need to as most delivery drivers/postal workers are aware and will simply open the door and put the parcel inside. If the door is locked, I'm not home and it's left according to the safe place instructions.

They really can't win. People complain if they leave parcels outside and complain if they put them safe inside. Just put a note on the door saying don't leave parcels inside instead of slagging them off on MN.

I wondered that too.
