Amazon delivery driver came into my house

I was laying on the sofa earlier watching tv, I had a notification that my Amazon parcel had been delivered.

I thought it was strange that I hadn’t heard anyone knock the door, I went to check the garden for the parcel and as I walked into the dining room I could see the parcel on the dining table.

It really creeped me out that the delivery driver came into my house, he/ she would’ve seen and heard the tv on, I cant understand why they didn’t knock the door or just throw the parcel into the house from the open door, there really wasn’t any need to come into the house.

I’m home alone this evening so I’m probably thinking about this differently than if there were others in the house with me, but its left me feeling really uneasy.

I’m thinking of reporting it to Amazon.

AIBU - it was a normal thing for the driver to do

IANBU - its weird that they came into my house

rubbish sketch of where I was, and where the parcel was left is attached, also where the parcel was placed on the table, the driver would’ve definitely have had to come into the house, there was no way it would’ve been where it was from being thrown in or them reaching from the door.

I have not had a door that locks itself since the mid 1980s, when I lived in a rented flat with a yale lock. Since then all the homes I have lived in - mostly with DH, have had high quality uPVC doors with deadbolts.. I think the 'lock themselves type doors' must be cheapo ones. Easily kicked in. High security doors that you have to lock yourself are much better. (Unless you have a smart door/smart lock, which I doubt most people have.)

Self locking door? Nah fuck that. I'd be locking myself out every 5 minutes!

Sendnudes · 04/08/2024 23:15

I can only assume you guys have some high quality doors! The industry standard ones are known as a cylinder or "euro" lock, fitted as standard to practically every new build or any replacement door for the past 40 years or so. I suspect you must be specifying a higher quality kit.

Current door was expensive,we had all the doors and windows replaced and they let us have it at cost. All other doors have been yale locks.

I disagree, I shouldn’t have to lock the door for them not to come in.. they just shouldn’t come in!! It’s way overstepping the mark and totally unnecessary, leave the parcel / milk / whatever it is outside.

There have been dozens of threads about this. Equally, there have been dozens of threads where people complain that their parcels keep getting stolen from outside their house. Drivers are in a no-win situation. In this case I agree with others, if you don't want them to come in, lock your door. In my own case, I live in the country and the postwoman always puts our post inside. DPD and UPS usually just leave on the step.

I was sitting with my two young children in my back garden when a big, tall man strides in, in a motor bike helmet, having let himself in using the 6 foot high side gate. He had not rung the doorbell. I was terrified as I had no who this was and no way of protecting my kids or myself from this total stranger. I then realised he was holding an Amazon parcel. It was really intimidating and I wondered why someone would have bypassed your front door and gone through the closed side gate.

I did report to Amazon and they didn’t come across like they could care less.

It's not a cheapo one it was an option I requested that cost either the same or slightly more. My back door and French door obviously do not have this feature. I keep a large empty ornate wine bottle by the door to prop it open if I nip out the front, it would also serve as a handy weapon if needed. Maybe.

HauntedbyMagpies · 04/08/2024 23:48

Amazon call handler or live chat agent won’t care. They'll apologise profusely and give you a £20 voucher but it won’t get passed on/absolutely nothing will be said or done about it at their end.
The company is just too big and too successful to basically give a toss. In other words they can well afford to lose customers over rare issues like this so the customer agents are instructed to 'deal with it' on the company's behalf

HauntedbyMagpies · 04/08/2024 23:53

@HappiestSleeping Well you're very sheltered then because I live in a new build complete with new composite door and it has a lock like in the picture on both sides. That's it. It's called a multipoint lock. My home insurance requires these and charges 2% higher premium if you have Yale locks as they're easily pickable

HauntedbyMagpies · 04/08/2024 23:54

Would help if I attached the photo!

With the uPVC doors unless you lock them then yep, anyone can walk in

I have a upvc front door. It locks when I shut it.

TheKingCobraIsNotStrictlySpeakingACobra · 05/08/2024 02:56

In the last 19 years, I have lived in 10 different houses. One - possibly two of those have had doors that lock on closing.

OP, you should be able to have your front door unlocked without uninvited guests wandering in. I’d be complaining.

I have a brand new front door, also multi point, and it latches. I've had several houses and doors, all multi point, and they all latches too. None of them made by Yale. I have also replaced several doors over the last 50 years and fitted multi point locks with latches.

I would humbly suggest that it might not be me who is sheltered assuming that it is only Yale who make latching locks, and that it is not possible to have a multi point lock that also has a latch.

(Yale also make multi point locks with latches, and have high security variants of same.)

Edited to add that many of them looked exactly like your picture.

Also, new builds are not known for high quality supply, and cheap euro cylinder locks are also very easily picked. I can't see the make of your lock in the picture, but it's probably worth checking.

Lock your door. You might have been snoring loudly and not heard his/her knocking.
Be thankful that it was the delivery driver and not a theif.

I've never seen a front door that didn't lock when it shuts. Yale or no Yale.

Me neither, and.i don't think it's the dark ages of locks like a PP said. I'd rather my front door automatically locked itself. Feels better and safer to me.

How are you able to tell how every door you see locks? Do you walk down streets with some kind of label on every door . I absolutely can't believe that unless you never go out or live on some place with unusual door rules.

Every time you leave the house you must see all manner of different doors

gleefulstar · 05/08/2024 06:11

Maybe use this as a lesson.

If an Amazon man can come into your house without you hearing, so could anyone else.

Lock your door.

I think the thing that surprises me is that everyone seems to think there is only one type. I would expect to have a latch on the front door and no latch on a back door. It's entirely possible to fit either to either door.

Personally, I wouldn't want a front door that doesn't latch.

As I said earlier, each to their own though.

Are you living in the dark ages of Yale locks? Most doors do not lock unless you lock them.

Or the very modern ages of extremely expensive Banham locks, seen as the gold standard on period doors.

Love how these threads always turn into victim blaming. You don't see how "you should lock your door if you don't want someone to come in" is just another variation on the "well she shouldn't have worn that if she didn't want to be attacked" culture. ?

Peoples behaviour is their own responsibility !! Her door could have been wide open, you don't enter someone's house without permission.

ThankFitsFriday · 05/08/2024 08:59

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 04/08/2024 23:30

I wondered that too.

I really don’t know, I usually hear everything. I was watching a film, but the volume wasn’t up particularly loud.

If they’d come in to drop the parcel off and said something eg ‘hello, just dropping parcel off’, I wouldn’t have been so bothered, but it seems that they were intentionally quiet and discreet about opening the door and coming in.

I've never seen a front door that didn't lock when it shuts. Yale or no Yale.

We have a standard double glazed uPVC porch door - and have had for 20 years. That has to be locked. Our front door has a Yale lock, but none of our relatives have one.

Sendnudes · 04/08/2024 21:48

Yes and these dont exist in most houses build since say 1950 onwards. It used to be mortice and lever but since 90's they're all Euro style locks.

I got a new composite door fitted recently and it auto locks. I think you're wrong. Most doors will lock when closed ( lock from the outside anyway, you can still open from the inside without a key).

I have also never lived in a house where this wasn't the case

countrysidelife2024 · 05/08/2024 09:21

i dont lock my doors and this has happened to me before except he was just trying, i had the chain over the door and was in the bath, heard him literally trying to RAM my door open ( obviously knowing i was probably in) i had both of my babies sleeping and i was in the bath feeling really scared, then got notification delivery left outside. i was so angry

countrysidelife2024 · 05/08/2024 09:21

also i have lives in 8 houses in the last 5 years ( long story) and none of them have auto locked

Justleaveitblankthen · 05/08/2024 09:26

@Sendnudes

The old Terrace I grew up in did this.
Full Yale lock.

These days they mainly need to be locked using the door handle upright whilst turning the key 🤔

I visit lots of vulnerable/ elderly people and lock the door myself when I enter and make sure one of us fully locks it on my exit.
