Amazon delivery driver came into my house

I was laying on the sofa earlier watching tv, I had a notification that my Amazon parcel had been delivered.

I thought it was strange that I hadn’t heard anyone knock the door, I went to check the garden for the parcel and as I walked into the dining room I could see the parcel on the dining table.

It really creeped me out that the delivery driver came into my house, he/ she would’ve seen and heard the tv on, I cant understand why they didn’t knock the door or just throw the parcel into the house from the open door, there really wasn’t any need to come into the house.

I’m home alone this evening so I’m probably thinking about this differently than if there were others in the house with me, but its left me feeling really uneasy.

I’m thinking of reporting it to Amazon.

AIBU - it was a normal thing for the driver to do

IANBU - its weird that they came into my house

rubbish sketch of where I was, and where the parcel was left is attached, also where the parcel was placed on the table, the driver would’ve definitely have had to come into the house, there was no way it would’ve been where it was from being thrown in or them reaching from the door.

It amazes me how many times this gets posted.
I've lived in a few houses at my grand old age. I've never lived in a house where a front door didn't lock when it was shut.
I've only ever known one person whose door stayed unlocked. Is it really this common?

Where I live all the surrounding houses have the same type of door, a super common one that doesn't lock when you close it, it's totally normal

I'm always surprised how so many posters on here aren't aware that not all doors are the same as theirs especially as there are so many threads about delivery people entering the house and doors being unlocked during the day

Theunamedcat · 04/08/2024 21:56

I always have my door locked I suppose I'm more paranoid than most especially as my ex is a psycho but I do complain to amazon about piss poor delivery practices I have extremely clear instructions to leave the parcel in my safe space literally an open porch area next to my front door they can put it in there photo and go but no they insist on leaving it on my doorstep in full view of everyone and leaving it for people to steal I'm pissy with them because there is no need for it

With the uPVC doors unless you lock them then yep, anyone can walk in

Not all uPVC. I have had several and they all lock when shut. You do have to lift the handle to engage the multi point lock, but it shuts and you can't get in without the key even without the multi point lock.

Meadowlands · 04/08/2024 21:58

Delivery drivers can't win can they.
Damned if they leave them outside and damned if they leave them inside.

Mines got the bit where you lift the handle but must be broken because it doesn't lock it😅

Really? I have a 9 year old house, the front door doesn’t lock when it shuts, same for other houses round here.

I've had old houses, old doors, new doors, wooden doors, uPVC doors. Never had one that didn't latch when it shuts. Would change it if it did to be honest too.

Fluffyelephant · 04/08/2024 21:59

HappiestSleeping · 04/08/2024 21:49

I've never seen a front door that didn't lock when it shuts. Yale or no Yale.

PVC doors don’t lock without you locking them… I thought they were the norm.

it’s insanity people don’t have their doors locked. Even when they’re inside. If an Amazon driver can come in and drop off a parcel on the dining table while you’re distracted watching tv someone could just as easily take your car keys by the front door or your handbag from the hall.

I've never lived in a house where the front door locks automatically.
None if my friends or either 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had something similar happen to me OP and I reported it to Amazon.

I posted on MN at the time and got told it was my own fault. Apparently leaving your unlocked means anyone is allowed to enter your property 🙄

JC03745 · 04/08/2024 22:00

Were you actually asleep OP? Having seen your diagram, I can't believe a person opened your door, walked in, left the post then walked out without you being aware. I'd also find it odd they didn't knock, ring the bell or yell out 'amazon/delivery' etc.
I agree they shouldn't have entered you home at all.
Why are they coming to your back door and why keep it unlocked if you can't see/hear the door being opened?

twilightcafe · 04/08/2024 22:01

Secure your front door! The only way you can get into my house is with a door key or someone indoors lets you in.

Could have been much worse than an Amazon driver.

It isn't so much that the type of lock doesn't exist, that isn't what surprises me as I know it is a thing. What surprises me is that it doesn't have to be that way and that people don't change the lock. Especially as there are so many threads about it.

Sure, the delivery drivers shouldn't do this, but then, thieves should not burgle people either. They do, so why have a lock that allows entry?

Seems crazy to me, but each to their own.

Catza · 04/08/2024 22:02

I must be the only person who tapes the note on the door saying “I am working and can’t’ come to the door. Please pop the parcel inside. The giant dog just wants smooches”.

Devilsmommy · 04/08/2024 21:53

Depends on the lock. I've had uPVC ones that lock on close, and ones without. With some locks its a little switch you can flick to change the behaviour.

DoAClassicCamel · 04/08/2024 22:07

You’re lucky it was a delivery driver, could have been a burglar. Lock your doors.

If I had a door that locked itself I'd buy a new door, me and my family go in a new out of the front door probably 50 times or even more a day, it would be completely unworkable if the door was locked all the time.

I wouldn't mind if a delivery person pops a parcel in the hall, they dont as they mostly need a signature or photo but obviously it depends where you live, I'm semi rural and I don't think I've ever heard of a day time burglary where someone was in their house

AdviceNeeded2024 · 04/08/2024 22:15

I think the only thing I want to say is please don’t leave your doors unlocked when you are inside. There are so many opportunistic burglars who will enter your house even if you are downstairs watching TV. Lock your doors at all times!!

TheFlis · 04/08/2024 22:18

Sendnudes · 04/08/2024 21:53

Exactly. For all modern euro/cylinder locks you need to lift the handle. This activates the 3 or 5 point locking mechanism you need for most insurance policies.

Other than Yales ive no idea what mechanisms lock themselves.

Most Banham locks also lock themselves when they close.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 04/08/2024 22:18

When we had a new front door I specified I wanted a handle that locked out side so we have like a fixed square instead of a handle. I've never lived in a house that didn't have an automatically locking front door.

Yes.

We have to actively lock our door going in or out.

When we got our new door it didn't have a 'latch' option and where I live I wanted to have it unlocked when I was outside

But I always keep it locked the rest of the time

It gets posted on here all the time. They've opened my front door and stuck it in the porch too. Its pretty weird but seems common.

Porch isn't usually considered "coming into the house"

Sadly I know someone who had their downstairs burgled while she was upstairs during the daytime. It was awful how vulnerable she felt after that. Some people are real scumbags

Jessk30 · 04/08/2024 22:25

This happened to me a few weeks ago I was in the sitting room with my teenage daughter and feeding my newborn and he walked in to the sitting room then left then walked back in and threw my parcel then zoomed off in his car!! Was so strange

Don't move to London then. 😞

EmberAsh · 04/08/2024 22:34

There was a thread a few weeks ago about a 'post person' and it was completely batshit. The majority said that delivery people had the right to walk into your house if the door was unlocked and you should be grateful you got your parcel rather than feel your privacy had been invaded. Interesting that the vote option on this thread is skewed heavily the other way.
