To think that this is mockery of the highest level.

In a country of food banks and poverty a well know department store has opened a shop selling fake food as toys. It's sold out and people are paying £50 for a chip with a cute smile.

AIBU that we have lost touch with reality l? Consumerism gone mad?!

Quite. The Communist Party of Britain received a total of 2622 votes in the General Election last month (it would've been 2623 if they'd fielded a candidate in my constituency, but sadly they didn't).

There are few supporters of any kind of regime that would seriously address the issue of wealth divide in the UK. While it exists, civil unrest and crime rates are likely to continue to get worse.

Nothing wrong with a wealth divide. Or consumerism.

Time we stop blaming everyone else for our problems and situations in life and work on improving ourselves.

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 04/08/2024 13:03

Op didn't come back then! 😂

Eustaciavile · 04/08/2024 13:15

As an ideaology, I hate consumerism and buying ‘stuff’ for stuff’s sake isn’t for me. I can’t understand ‘shopping’ as an activity, and agree that there is an irony in food banks existing alongside designer play food.

However, I also recognise my own hypocrisy in that my views don’t prevent me from buying second hand books, paying over the odds for a local veg box or indeed £50 for cat tree for my (spoiled) cats whose food is pricier than mine.

I think very few people are genuinely free from consumerism.

MillyMollyMandHey · 04/08/2024 22:06

Just Stop Jellycats coming to a store near you.

Toys we should ban because they might be "insensitive" to some

  • Baby dolls, because some women can't have babies
  • Doll's houses and Lego house sets because some people are homeless
  • Toy cars because some people can't afford to run a car
  • Toy food because some people are hungry
  • Toy animals because some people are allergic
  • Toy money because some people are poor

You beat me to it! This post is crackers......

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:11

I got the bowl of porridge with bluberries Jellycat for my niece....it's adorable!

Overtheatlantic · 04/08/2024 22:18

I don’t like communism because it brings out the jealousy in people.

mondaytosunday · 04/08/2024 22:35

Fake food has been a play thing forever. Expensive toys have been a thing forever. Have you just realised?

betterangels · 04/08/2024 22:40

We live in late-stage capitalism. That said, I'm a 70s baby and played with fake foods in play kitchens. It's not a new thing. I don't know why you're so outraged tbh.

merrywidow · 04/08/2024 23:17

I remember when jelly cat was reasonably priced, good value even. Their prices are eye watering now

stayathomer · 04/08/2024 23:18

Just googled them and most searched seems to be ‘why are they so expensive’, ‘why do people like them’ and ‘what is the deal with them’😅 Not for me, seems like a horrendous waste of money but then toy fads usually are but cherished when bought for the right person (I was a my little pony and Care Bear girl myself 😉)

merrywidow · 04/08/2024 23:22

We are currently in Jellycat fever, this too shall pass like Ty Beenie Babies.

Teamlilac · 05/08/2024 00:10

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 03/08/2024 23:26

Are you talking about the jellycat fish and chip shop? Without any context this sounds mad.

It’s just a soft toy. They are over priced but I’m not sure why it matters if it’s a chip soft toy or a bunny soft toy.

🤣 I have a very expensive jellycat plant for my office, saved me thousands on replacing a real one everytime I forget to water it!

Incredible 😆 X

Gameofmoans81 · 05/08/2024 09:41

I think the jellycat chips are distracting people but the general complete brainwashing of the entire population into buying stuff that they don’t really need and that quite quickly ultimately ends in landfill leading to complete climate meltdown is absolutely dismaying yes. And I’m just as guilty as everyone else, the problem is too huge

Cheesecakelunch · 05/08/2024 09:45

Goodness. We don't live in a communist dictatorship.

LostTheMarble · 05/08/2024 09:55

Fake food toys have been an absolute godsend to me. All three of my ASD children have a love to food stuff but I hate wastage. My house looks like a Squishmallow outlet shop but the kids are happy. They had the best Christmas morning coming down to a huge £50 one each!

Fake food has been a play thing forever. Expensive toys have been a thing forever. Have you just realised?

Look on the pet aisle of a supermarket or a pet store and you’ll find loads of fake food. Fake burgers, fake fruit and veg, fake portions of McDonald’s chips, fake chicken drumsticks, fake strings of sausages, even fake Starbucks coffee cups…and they all squeak.

AngleClara · 05/08/2024 10:22

Are you talking about Jellycats?

One, it isn't fake foood, it's a cute teddy bear barely resembling an article of food.

Two, consumerism hasn't got much to do with poverty. I thought this would be about the environment. Poor people can be consumerist

And what does the price have to do with it? Why does this specific toy annoy you? Have you donated anything recently, or have you selfishly been on holiday, eaten nice food and done other things?

AngleClara · 05/08/2024 10:26

Sweetteaplease · 04/08/2024 01:40

I don't know why you're getting such a hard time OP. I agree with you. We are all guilty of it (buying crap that we don't need, it's quite shameful when you really think about it)

How can one even over-consume jellycats a given the price of them? They are the opposite of overconsumption: well made collectibles that people actually value and keep forever.

OP is ridiculously wrong and can't seem to get their point straight.

I think I’m going to have to investigate them further, for my office!

Zoflorabore · 05/08/2024 11:44

@MooseBeTimeForSnow they are bloody gorgeous! I want some too now.

my dd will be so proud of me 🤣
