Does getting ID’d annoy you

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 13:49

Got ID’d for a scratch card earlier and I didn’t have any ID on me so they wouldn’t serve me. I’m 30. Yet I am able to go on a night out and not get ID’d all night for alcohol

It used to, but now they barely glance at me. I'm 34 and it makes me feel old 😂

spermwhale · 03/08/2024 13:52

No. I'm 28 and get ID'd often. I also work in retail and have ID'd people my age and older, if you look under 25 to the person serving you're gonna get asked

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 13:52

@changedusernameforthis1 yeah I’ll probably feel sad when I’m older and no longer get ID’d anywhere😂

No because I know the shop staff are just doing their fucking job

MonsteraMama · 03/08/2024 13:52

No, at 34 I laugh and take it as a compliment. If you think I look like I might be under 25 duck you crack on.

The only time it's every annoyed me was at 6am coming off a 14 hour shift and trying to buy a Monster to get me home. You have to be 16+ to buy energy drinks and I just went "do you seriously think I look 16?" in a tremulous, close to tears voice, wafting my stinky 14 hour shift uniform at her. She changed her mind.

She could get in trouble for that. Once asked you're not supposed to back down

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 13:53

By the way this thread is light hearted and just a general question before people start taking it the wrong way😁

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 13:54

@summerdazey No need to get all angry😂

Mildly irritating being refused service to buy alcohol at 37. I took it politely though.

Getting IDed twice at 42 was just plain funny.

LaeralSilverhand · 03/08/2024 13:55

Only ever been ID’d in America in my 20s. Never once been ID’d in the U.K., and I started going to pubs and clubs when I was 14…

Didimum · 03/08/2024 13:56

Yes, it does annoy me now, though when I was younger I used to take it as a compliment. I’m 39 and still get ID in Waitrose and Asda for alcohol (not Tesco weirdly!). I shop at all three regularly. I don’t drive so unless I get one of those national ID things or carry my passport around with me, it’s a right pain, because I’m just refused service and either my husband has to go out again or I have to traipse back with my passport. I have never successfully bought alcohol in Waitrose or Asda (and this is across two different towns I’ve lived).

I don’t care about looking 25 anymore, I just want my bloody wine please.

Ok? And? I didn't hold her at gunpoint, she chose to ID me then chose to change her mind without actually checking my ID.

Odearr · 03/08/2024 13:56

No, except I dont have ID so it's annoying but I don't get annoyed at the shop workers/ I've worked in shops and it's hard to who looks definitely over 25. I'm 33 though and I don't drink so it's normally me and my two children and I'm just trying to buy a red bull it's always embarrassing if they make me put it back but it is what it is

Didimum · 03/08/2024 13:57

summerdazey · 03/08/2024 13:52

No need to get sweary, love. You can be annoyed about it happening and not blame the shop staff.

I'm 65 and I was delighted to be challenged at the cinema recently because I had bought a senior ticket online.

I offered to show them my senior railcard at which point she said "it's fine, you just don't look your age" 😁

BigAnne · 03/08/2024 14:00

@Tiggersjo8 I get annoyed when I'm not asked for proof for over 60's concessions 😂

pinacollateral · 03/08/2024 14:00

It does annoy me a bit because I'm in my mid-30's and I look it, there is no way in hell I look under 25 or like there is any chance I might be 17.

Having said that, people are just doing their jobs, and some people are not good at judging age.

I'd never have a go at someone over it - really I just kick myself for not bringing ID.

snoopyfanaccountant · 03/08/2024 14:00

I am 54 and I got ID'd buying a bottle of wine in a supermarket in California.

😮 So everyone has a new form of the complimentary IDing to come in later life!

Cabincrew1 · 03/08/2024 14:01

Last time I got Id’d was 9 years ago when I was 40, what’s to complain about it’s a compliment really.

Michellebops · 03/08/2024 14:01

47 and I still get asked for ID
I love it 😂

Well I suppose the complaint is that if they've ID'd you at 40 it probably means they haven't looked at your face properly.

I've never met a 40+ year old who I thought looked like they weren't old enough to buy alcohol. And if you've not got ID on you, you can't buy whatever you wanted to buy, which is annoying.

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 14:04

I understand people are just doing their jobs so I never get rude or anything. I just hope the scratch card I wanted wasn’t a winning one😁

swashbucklecheer · 03/08/2024 14:04

I took my ID with me last night just in case I got asked at the bar. Nobody was interested (I'm 43!)

Didimum · 03/08/2024 14:04

It’s worth noting that in some US states they have to ID like spot checks – so every 10th person or whatever, regardless of them clearly not being under 21.

It can seem to some of us in our 30s rather ridiculous, but I wonder if it’s older employees mainly doing the IDing? Because when I see a 25yr old now I’m like 🤷‍♀️ 16? 17? I dunno?
