Oh FFS! Not THIS shite again. It's really not that difficult to educate yourself on this subject with minimal research. 🥱

Yeh, yet you chose not to do so apparently @nietzscheanvibe 🤷🏼‍♀️

amicissimma · 04/08/2024 22:55

While the argument rages back and forth, and looks as if it may do so for some time, there seems to be some evidence suggesting that these two people could be biologically male and, as a result, physically stronger than women would be expected to be. Surely, for the sake of safety of the female boxers, they should be suspended from the competition, or, in fairness to them, the competition delayed, until good evidence is produced that they are biologically female.

It's unfortunate that this hasn't been sorted out before the competition started, but that is the failure of the sports bodies of their own countries and of the IOC and doesn't mean that it is OK to subject other competitors to physical danger because fairly simple precautions were not taken.

This is not a matter of insults, or hurt feelings. It is a matter of ensuring that all competitors are as physically safe as they can possibly be.

It's all very well arguing about the generally-accepted definition of male and female, based on presence or absence of a Y chromosome, or coming up with various interesting words to describe abnormalities, but this is a matter of safety.

FYI these graphs specifically say they do not include women with PCOS,
so not the most helpful response to that particular comment/ debate

Cookiecoop · 04/08/2024 23:02

I have PCOS and worry about being attacked (verbally or physically) in female toilets because I don’t always look typically feminine. I can’t imagine how a trans/intersex/etc person must feel but I care deeply about one and I fear for them too.

I used the word d*ck (referencing someone else using the same word) and my comment was removed. I have apologised multiple times.

However, I have had the most spiteful abuse written directly to me on this thread, questioning my education, telling me to F off and saying that I am embarrassing (ironic really as being embarrassed about people calling me a man is what prompted me to write on here)

I sincerely hope that you are not this awful to vulnerable people in real life.

@mumsnet this is a horrible, horrible thread and I wish I’d never seen it let alone commented.

Goodnight x

Sending love 🩷 you are not wrong, these attitudes harm all people whose bodies and identities to not conform in the expected way to binary ideals of sex/ gender.

And similarly the “male” range is for “normal” / healthy males , so doesn’t map people with DSDs. A more relevant graph for this particular debate would show testosterone ranges in women with CAH and/ or PCOS , compared to those in people with XY chromosomes but with a DSD often resulting in female assignment (eg PAIS).

I will not take lectures on the non existance of DSD and intersex individuals.

Great, you're in the right place; nobody is doing that here.

Males with 5-ARD do not have a uterus or other female internal structures, but they do have what looks like a vagina, so are often sexed as females. However they are males with normal testes, which produce typical male hormones. Those hormones, among other things, prevent the development of female internal reproductive structures (like the uterus and cervix).

In embryonic development, we all start out with two sets of primordial duct systems, one set that will develop into the male internal reproductive stuff (the Wolffian ducts, which become the epididymis, vas deferens and seminal vesicles), and another that develops into the female internal stuff (the Müllerian ducts, which become the upper part of the vagina, cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes, pic at the end).

In males, fetal testes don't only produce testosterone! They also make Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), which is crucial for getting rid of the Mullerian ducts, and thus, ensuring that the eventual uterus, etc. don't develop. If there's no testes and no AMH, that female internal stuff will develop.

Males need high levels of T for male-typical development of all the male reproductive structures. Without T production and action, the external (penis and scrotum) and internal (described above) genitalia won't develop. But as I wrote in my monster tweet yesterday, T alone isn't enough for development of the penis and scrotum (and prostate): for that, T must be converted into DHT (a more potent androgen, production pathway below), and people with 5-ARD don't make the necessary enzyme to carry out that conversion. So they end up with what appears to be a vagina.

FYI, some males inherit a genetic mutation that means they can't produce AMH. They are typical males, but have a nonfunctional uterus and fallopian tubes inside their abdomen. The condition often not discovered until adulthood (it's called Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome). AMH is an important hormone for males, but hardly anyone even knows it exists.

Also, the testes generally don't descend into the scrotum before birth (as usual) without DHT, but they often do at puberty when testosterone levels reach high concentrations. So males with 5-ARD may be "sexed" as female, due to the female-appearing external genitalia.

But brain and the rest of the body are typically male. Most people with the condition will "transition" to living as a male once they realize they are male, and this often happens at puberty, when the testes descend and the body develops in a typically masculine way.

You're clearly knowledgeable and I'm not trying to be difficult but is AMH not a female hormone that shows ovarian reserve 🤔
I could be talking shite, or is it same / similar letters different hormone?

On the "They have F in their passports, so they are women front."

What if the Government raised the breath alcohol limit to 100 mcg instead of 35? You could have a couple of bottles of wine and drive home, because a flawed law said it was fine.

The IBA and WBO, two of the world's biggest boxing authorities say they are not eligible, because they failed "gender" tests. The IOC has little to no experience of controlling boxing and its safety.

Rustnot · 04/08/2024 23:45

@Cookiecoop ignore the awful and personal comments people are making on here. There is so much wrong about this thread its nonsensical now anyway.

Needanewname42 · 04/08/2024 23:47

The bottom line to all of this is to protect female sport the IOC need to re introduce chromosome testing.

While there is a huge focus on two boxers, there are footballers who appear to be flying under the radar. And those are the 'sports people' who have been noticed.
We've still to get to track n field events which usually throws up some 'questionable females' and actually it would be better for everyone if the XX / XY tests were carried out.

No hate, why would there be. but it’s a very emotive subject, as women are constantly gaslit about this topic. It’s like being told night is day when it clearly isn’t.

But we’ll not agree on this one. Which is ok. Take care.

The WBO is the 4th most respected boxing organisation in the world behind the WBA, the WBC and the IBF. Their European vice president, a Hungarian, made these comments before the recent match with a fellow Hungarian competitor. As far as I'm aware it is not the overall stance of the WBO on a whole, but I'm happy to be corrected. The IBA is a very, very minor organisation in the grand scheme of the boxing world. It also has received a lot of negative press relating to it's Russian connections, corruption and selective testing for non Russian or Belarusian boxers. So much so that some 20 nations boycotted the 2023 championships they arranged including major players like the USA, the UK, Canada, Germany and Poland.
It should also be pointed out that both of the boxers in question had 4 fights in these "championships" before they were suddenly disqualified for failing a gender test that was never specified.
Why were they allowed to fight in the first place if they were tested and found to be male? Surely a boxing organisation of such high standards would make sure everyone was eligible before a punch was even thrown.

The Olympics should be amazing for girls and women - a chance to see how strong and dedicated and courageous women can be, great role models, exciting competition.

But I just feel it's all soured.

Oh, come on.

It's not "all soured'" is it?

A couple of outlier situations/examples do not mean, for example, that Keely Hodgkinson is not absolutely wondrous.

And there are a thousand other examples of absolute aceness to enjoy.

Let's not over-egg here, please.

SinnerBoy · 05/08/2024 02:10

DogFacedWoman · Today 01:24

The IBA has been in existence since 1946 and its membership comprises more than 200 national boxing authorities.

I don't know why they didn't test them before the competitions, but it's not unlikely that there were complaints. Also, they have eyes and presumably, a modicum of intelligence.

Don't forget, the tests were conducted by properly accredited laboratories, it wasn't a dodgy Uzbek doctor, brought in and given a brown envelope.

TheKeatingFive · 05/08/2024 02:57

I believe the reason for them implementing tests is because a group coaches asked them to, presumably based on what they were seeing on the ground.

It's dominating the press conferences everyday so it's having a significant impact. I imagine it's souring the experience for the IOC spokespeople for starters.

NotBadConsidering · 05/08/2024 03:27

I would be interested to know how many more women need to be punched in the face by men and how many more (known) rapists need to be walking around freely before the Olympics tips from woman celebrating to woman hating.

Five more? Ten more? Do they carry equal weight? Is it a 1:1 ratio? So one man-punches-woman : one Keely Hodgkinson? One rapist : one Simone Biles?
