But sex is more than your genes. You have to take into account genes, physiology and hormones.

I will not take lectures on the non existance of DSD and intersex individuals.
And I strongly disagree with the statement that a male was fighting a female in this case. Two women fighting each other, one with a possible DSD which may mean they should not be in the same category. But two women.

Well, speculatively...

Genes - XY
Physiology - virilisation means male puberty may have "overwritten" any erroneous decisions made at birth
Hormones - testosterone dominant

Another one who skipped Biology lessons at school. There is still time.

XY = male
XX = female

Anything else is just whataboutery aka flat earthism.

Obviously DSDs exist, that's the whole and entire point.

What's your understanding of 5 ARD? You do understand it only occurs in males?

Personally I draw the line at "man", and would stick with male - but that's purely cause a lot of people seem to argue with their emotions on the subject and ignore the science

That said, I don't police others language if they choose to say man. After all, an adult male human is a man 🤷🏼‍♀️

For sporting purposes, key criteria being whether this individual has been through puberty as a male.

Two tests have already concluded that is the case. If you have some issue with those tests (why I don't know) why won't the IOC commission another one?

TheKeatingFive · 04/08/2024 22:11

Two women fighting each other, one with a possible DSD

Yet again I ask ...

What female DSD do you think fits the observable facts?

SinnerBoy · 04/08/2024 22:12

Tandora

All facts are pointing to this person being a cis woman with a DSD.

No, none of the facts are pointing to that in any way.

ll09sm · 04/08/2024 22:12

DSD is not some kind of third sex or an alternative to man or woman.

DSD is an abnormality. To the rule that human beings are either male or female. The rule still remains. There are only two sexes. Make or female.

Hunan beings only have two legs and two arms. If people are born without a leg or an arm or born with a third limb, that’s doesn’t make it a new category of how many limbs are normal. It is an abnormality.

It is scary that people who struggle with such simple science and basic knowledge wall among us. Worse still, they are allowed to vote.

Tandora · 04/08/2024 22:13

HipTightOnions · 04/08/2024 21:42

Whether later in life it turned up that she has XY, how can anyone be blamed for that?

Nobody is being blamed for that, but it means that he is male.

(If you don't understand why, try reading one of the many threads which explain clearly.)

What are you talking about. “ Explain it clearly” 🙄😑

Stop passing off your opinions (wrong opinions) - as facts.
its getting really old. The issue has been discussed to death.

if you want to hold on to your black and white position then no one can stop you, but please stop presenting it as the beginning and end of the story.

That's unfair. These issues can be quite complex. Most people have a very crude understanding of DSDs - even those who have read quite a bit on it.

Personally I find the responses of all.the women who've boxed these athletes so far, the IBA ban, the World Boxing comment, the IOC's admission they have DSDs, and the analysis of people like Emma Hilton and Ross Tucker who all suggest these athletes are males pretty authoritative.

Conversely, we have passports.

if only biology lessons were that simple , we’d all have a nobel prize in genetics 🙄

ArabellaScott · 04/08/2024 22:19

We've also had decades of activists and lobbyists convincing people that 'sex is a spectrum' or that people can change sex. The IOC works on the basis of 'gender identity', not sex. It's no wonder people are confused.

DSDs are sex specific, though. You remain either male or female. If you have internal testes and are virilised through male puberty, then whatever your genitals look like, you are by definition a man. It's ableist and unpleasant to question that, based on cosmetics around the genitalia. Chromosomes and hormones make you a man or a woman, and the DSD one restricted to men or women.

Some people, due to medical limits in their region of birth, are wrongly assigned at birth as the visible genitals are incongruent with the hormonal and chromosomal facts. That doesn't change the reality, because words can't alter material fact.

I don't know if these boxers have a DSD or not. They may be male, they may be female. Jury is out. But a male with a medical condition affecting external genitals is still male. In fact, they have a condition that can only affect males.

There is no such thing as "intersex" in the sense of being hermaphrodite, and it's othering and ableist to claim otherwise. Again, no clue what the deal is with the boxers, but yes, DSDs exist - as sexed conditions. Depending on the DSD, if any, they may be male.

The boxer that everyone is upset about isn't a man. They are intersex. Completely different. They are not, and have never been trans, or male. They were born biologically with female genitalia. They do tend to have more testosterone., but not much else different. But mumsnet loves to get upset over trans issues so I'm not surprised about the misinformation.

Oh FFS! Not THIS shite again. It's really not that difficult to educate yourself on this subject with minimal research. 🥱

She’s not a man. She was assigned female at birth. Are women with PCOS men because of their testosterone levels?

What a facile comment.

He's got male chromosomes.

So even if he was observed (not assigned) as female at birth in error perhaps because he has a DSD he's simply not female.

Do you think the PCOS argument is some sort of clever gotcha? It just makes you look a bit simple.

A woman with a hormone imbalance because of a medical condition is still a woman with XX chromosomes.

Woman isn't an identity it is a biological fact.

No I’m not stupid, thanks though.

I have pcos and have been accused of being ‘male’ because I have more facial hair. I’m obviously not but it shows our biology is complex

ArabellaScott · 04/08/2024 22:50

There is no overlap between T levels of a female with XX chromosomes and a male with XY chromosomes. I'll try and find the graphs.
