Disagree with communal fridge

Our neighbour, we shall call them “neighbour X” recentl started a discussion on the street WhatsApp about needing a communal fridge so anyone on the street can store excess fridge stuff over the summer. Everyone chipped in and “neighbour x” bought the fridge.

I am starting to get a bit miffed about it all, as firstly the fridge is kept at neighbour Xs house, which means they kind of control it. Secondly, we needed to use it recently to store excess drinks as we were having people over. Guess what, it was full so no use at all.

What has really annoyed me is that I have since heard it was mainly full due to neighbour X filling it with their own stuff. I am feeling really annoyed that we chipped in £50 for something we cannot even use when we need it. AIBU?

We’ve got one in our town it’s called the ‘community fridge’. It’s in the town hall and is very popular. It had to be moved to the town hall due to vandalism and people stealing huge quantities of food from it. I think it’s a lovely idea for families who are struggling to make ends meet. People donate food and I know that left over food from one of the supermarkets gets taken there from time to time too. I think in times when the cost of living is so high and people are struggling to pay their bills things like this can make a real difference.

Edited

That's a great idea , and hopefully it helps out those out that need it.

A shared fridge in someone else's house is nuts .
How are you going to stop anyone from 'borrowing ' your food.

Imagine the arguments when Christmas comes. 😂

BunnyLake · 02/08/2024 19:18

I’ve heard some bizarre things in my time and this is up there with them. A very odd idea and yet taken up by the neighbours (which is even odder). I thought it was going to be a uni issue.

FreebieWallopFridge · 02/08/2024 19:18

Youre not being unreasonable but I can’t fathom how any of you thought this would be a good idea, and also how you didn’t see this coming!

kittylion2 · 02/08/2024 19:20

When we first moved here in 1989, there was a neighbourhood watch type of scheme - and some sort of committee. We got newsletters in which we learned that there were neighbourhood ladders, quite a few neighbourhood tools (can't remember what now) and a neighbourhood jam pan (?) They were kept at different number houses and I think they were bought from subscriptions (I THINK there were subscriptions, but it was a long time ago. Even then I thought it was a bit of a rip off - one particular bloke seemed to have all the ladders and tools.

We didn't borrow any of them and within a few years all those people moved and took the neighbourhood property with them. Cheeky devils.

can widowers eat lasagne

What!? 😂

Say what? 😂

Lilysgoneshopping · 02/08/2024 19:21

Well you've been had haven't you!! You can get a small worktop drinks fridge for less than that. Google is your friend here.
Go and tell them you've opted out and you want your 50 quid back 😆

Rosscameasdoody · 02/08/2024 19:21

How many neighbours gave £50 ? I only paid £150 for a fridge we keep in the garage for things like that. Maybe you’d be better doing that.

ChubSeedsYorkie · 02/08/2024 19:22

This is just odd. I understand a community fridge whereby you put food you won’t have time to use but a shared overflow fridge is just weird tbh.

nationalsausagefund · 02/08/2024 19:22

Who polices which neighbour clears up the loose frozen peas that get everywhere? Who decides the defrosting schedule and is there a vote on doing it with a hairdryer or turning it off and doing it slowly? What if one neighbour steals another’s magnums? Who refills the ice tray?

That’s mental! A communal fridge!
that’s never going to work.
the neighbour is a CF who’s played you all

This 👆

Sleepandchocolate2202 · 02/08/2024 19:24

This is bizarre… but seeing as you’ve already chipped in, surely there should be an allocated ‘space’ for everyone which only they can use ( then you could ask to borrow someone else’s space too if needed ) - maybe you should suggest that in the group chat?

Peachy2005 · 02/08/2024 19:25

The rest of you should call a meeting and vote for the fridge to be donated to a local charity…unless CF neighbour wants to buy you all out 😀…if this is actually real 😂

Bearbookagainandagain · 02/08/2024 19:26

I voted YABU because you agreed to this idiotic idea.

Sunshineandpool · 02/08/2024 19:28

I assumed you meant a community fridge that people put their excess food in and anyone can take from it.

But then realised you said communal fridge and wondered where it would go so that everyone can access it.

But it doesn't sound as if anyone else can access it. And shouldn't you all have a certain amount of room in it. How many paid into it?

I think it's a bit of a strange concept especially the way you have done it.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 02/08/2024 19:30

This cannot be true!! 😂😂

It’s the craziest thing I’ve heard in a long time!

HaveSomeIntrospect · 02/08/2024 19:31

Funniest thing I’ve read today

DeathbyDying · 02/08/2024 19:31

tell her the fridge needs to be moved into her front garden in a lockable shed/outbuilding accessible with a key code.

I'm not sure I beleive this story as it sounds so mental that someone would suggest this and even more mental that anyone would actually chip in.

pleasehelpwi3 · 02/08/2024 19:31

Oddest thing I've seen on this website.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 02/08/2024 19:35

Who even knows about the neighbours fridges, who talks about this, why would they know that everyone ‘needs’ overflow cold storage to even suggest it?! 😂😂

I think this must be a wind up.

MissMoneyFairy · 02/08/2024 19:36

If this really did happen you're all bonkers, obviously it would have to be kept at someone's house but is this just a wind up

BenchyMcBenchFace · 02/08/2024 19:38

Book a shelf early now to avoid Christmas disappointment! 🤣🤣🤣

GingerPirate · 02/08/2024 19:39

foothandmouth · 02/08/2024 18:30

Never heard of this. What an odd concept

Yes, it sounds bizarre.
Is it plugged in the middle of the street?
Maybe neighbour X found some nifty trick how to get into the grid 😂
No, it's in his home.
So other neighbours crowd funded his new fridge
😳

How do you communal split the electric bill?
