How much can one corporation get wrong before we all say enough?

They cut local radio and continue to do so.
They gave no care to staff and listeners.
They asked nobody and took an axe to it.

They didn't. Listen to mps, they don't care about people who rely on local radio. They don't understand local radio.

It's not gone away. Thankfully people are still protesting.

Nope. Two of my posts on here have been about the BBC – one of which actually contained a criticism. The other four have been in reply to you, attempting to dictate how I phrase my opinions. If you want to call me passionate in the face of a pedantic obsession over four words, then yep – have a field day with that, I guess.

I took issue with the sweeping generalisation that: 'WE are incredibly lucky' to have the BBC.'

I don't think we are and nor do others.

So since you can't speak for everyone, I suggested what you meant was: I think we are lucky.'

Big difference.

Yes, you've said that several times. I KNOW. I am still not going to alter phrasing my opinions to please one person on an internet forum. Are we clear? Good.

stormywhethers321 · 02/08/2024 10:53

No. Any large entity with a staff made up of humans is going to include some flawed individuals. We aren't going to abolish schools because a tiny percentage of staff are predators and we aren't going to abandon the NHS because it once employed Lucy Letby. Occasionally, things will happen that upset us, but we can't just salt the earth so nothing can ever grow again every time we find a worm.

And, as I've said multiple times, you can phrase opinions how you like. This is true.

But if people disagree with those opinions, you can expect to be challenged. Also true.

Enjoy your day.

And as I have said, I don't care about being challenged on the opinion. I engaged with it perfectly politely earlier in the thread with no issues whatsoever. I am not going to be told how to word my opinions. Please leave me alone now.

The only people who’ll benefit from the demise of the BBC will be streaming services who’d immediately push up prices even further, and Lachlan Murdoch, son ov Rupert who’s poised to take over, and is the driving force behind America’s Fox News.

mitogoshi · 02/08/2024 11:22

No, the bbc did what they had to, kept it confidential. Until he was charged no crime was on record and he resigned (in April) before he was charged in June. They had to follow their standard employment contracts like anyone else off on sick leave.

Many organisations, public and private sector will be dealing with employees that have committed crimes and they too have to follow employment contract law.

And btw, bbc news is editorially independent and they did not know about this at all. Clive Myrie looked a bit confused, ashamed and annoyed - wondering how a former colleague he respected could have done this no doubt. One bbc news journalist speaking confidently said the most upsetting this was he socialised with their family including small children, must be awful. BBC news was reporting in full as soon as it was known to them

mitogoshi · 02/08/2024 11:26

Should add, we mostly watch BBC (or via iplayer) despite paying for Sky and Netflix. Can't remember the last time I watched Sky before the Olympics (Eurosport has more coverage than the BBC due to the ioc not awarding free to air national television stations full rights, so wrong!)

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2024 11:43

@mitogoshi Thats annoying us too.

As for local bbc channels. The outcry when the license fee is increased is immense. Politicians continually interfere. Our Sky subscription is way more than BBC. The bbc is short of money. Low hanging fruit is therefore vulnerable.

Rummly · 02/08/2024 12:12

The BBC is worth keeping for now, for all the reasons PPs have given.

But its days are numbered.

It’s only said to be right wing by the Corbynite left. Everyone else is either happy with it or thinks it’s left wing, in a metropolitan middle class way. It’s very obviously the TV equivalent of the Guardian (much like C4, to be fair).

The rot started with Blair’s attack on it after the revelations of the ‘dodgy dossier’ disgrace. It was no longer self-governing and confident after that, and fell into a lapdog mentality. When your producers and journalists all live in West London and Islington (or want to), the natural option is to be bien pensant Labour.

The shiny floor, entertainment shows are increasingly unimportant and sport’s an open market.

Rummly · 02/08/2024 12:13

To add, the BBC’s coverage of Gaza has been fucking shockingly anti-Israeli.

BeethovenNinth · 02/08/2024 12:18

I long ago was disillusioned. Celebrity cover up. Appallingly biased during Covid. Even now - where is the commentary about the man punching the woman in the boxing?

and They ruined radio two!

they do not appeal to an angry permenopausal woman who isn’t ultra left

I thought in Covid it gave far too much of a free pass to the worst Prime Minister of all time. Indeed never challenged his government enough because of the threats to BBC funding.

What utter bollocks.

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2024 12:53

There is constant government interference though. Lisa Nandy couldn’t resist. She clearly doesn’t understand employment law or just bows to the baying masses. So yet again the bbc is different to other organisations. As an employer it just isn’t. The same laws apply.

In what way? I don’t think it’s been anti-Israel. I do think it’s shown a Palestinian perspective though (which is, of course, not the same as being anti-Israel).
