How much can one corporation get wrong before we all say enough?

I'd like to have the option of choosing to pay to watch the BBC. If that was available I'd happily never watch it again. It's outdated and overpriced and full of scandal.

hobbledyhoy · 31/07/2024 20:27

The BBC is something we should be immensely proud of and is revered around the world. Look at the mess that is created with partisan news channels - Fox News etc and creeping in here either GB news.

They cannot police thousands of staff and what they do in their own free time and of their own volition. You would need to apply the same logic to all businesses, which would be a violation of personal privacy and a ludicrous expectation.

They have already said they would have sacked him had he been charged, they like all employers, must follow legal process or they would be beset by employment tribunals.

As usual, the 'defund the BBC' specious argument, which has nothing to do actually do with the matter at hand.

We are incredibly lucky to have the BBC. I would be extremely worried if it ceased service.

Why are we lucky, and in what way is the BBC balanced and impartial? What is the international benchmark for its purported fabulousness?

Is it just because British telly is less shit than most foreign channels?

You can choose not to pay for and watch the BBC. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mnk711 · 31/07/2024 20:41

Not quite sure why you are blaming the BBC for mistakes that happened everywhere. For example the Strictly abuse clearly not OK, but unlike Love Island or Jeremy Kyle people haven't killed themselves afterwards. The BBC don't have a monopoly on this kind of stuff. Big name presenters or celebrities who have engaged in criminal behaviour can also be found on other TV channels. Cover ups are alleged to have happened in big businesses and governments all over the world. Call out the bad behaviour, deal with anyone involved in negligence or a cover up, but don't just throw the whole lot in the bin because of some problems that all organisations have to deal with.

Maybe the OP is a shill for GB News?

The BBC has a lot of problems but their radio content is unparalleled.

UnimaginableWindBird · 31/07/2024 20:52

It's worth it for Ceebeebies alone.

A few years ago you had no choice but to the pay the licence fee to fund the BBC if you wanted to watch Coronation Street, or the X Factor or Taskmaster or Big Brother.

But nowadays you are completely free to unplug your aerial, cancel your licence fee direct debit and watch your favourite ITV/Channel 4/Channel 5 shows on their apps. What's stopping you?

What’s wrong with their DEI policy?

New right-wing obsession. They think equality policies are bad. In fact this latest fad of theirs is just a cover for racism and misogyny.

Increasingly, with such high political and polarised debate and world conflict, it's essential for members of the public to have access to accurate, trustworthy and robust journalism. The quality of the BBC compared to other worldwide broadcasting is unparalleled. So yes, being 'less shit' matters, if you feel the need to put it that way.

No organisation – ever – will be perfect, and it's important to realise that the BBC comes up against greater scrutiny than any other media organisation in the country – if not the world. And it's been long documented that viewers with the strongest political views (in any direction) are most critical of the BBC's impartiality. As political polarisation is generally increasing, it makes sense that these criticisms of impartiality are also.

Something I think the BBC needs to better achieve is diversification of broadcasting, with a larger scope of reporting from people who understand regional issues at greater depth. And this is something that the Director General has also acknowledged.

I'm quite enjoying the Olympics coverage

I'm not. It's so limited. I kept getting really into something and it would randomly cut to a different sport or people commentating. Ended up paying for discovery plus for decent coverage.

Every organisation in the world will be the same. There are abusive people in positions of power everywhere sadly.

I only really watch and listen to bbc tbh (apart from masked singer on itv).

User6874356 · 31/07/2024 21:11

Their news is hugely biased and has a strong bias towards certain groups eg very anti women and anti Israel. The news has an obsession with drag queens and just doesn’t report things that doesn’t fit with its ideology. I object to paying for it. I am enjoying the Olympics but I think it’s time for it to be paid for by advertising.

allwillbe · 31/07/2024 21:12

love the Bbc- not perfect but more reliable than most news outlets and in the present times I would be really upset and worried to lose it

It’s not at all impartial. It’s ridiculously partial.

I don’t think it’s either anti women or anti Israel. I do think it shows a trans perspective and a Palestine perspective though. That does not at all mean it’s anti Israel or anti women - I completely disagree with that.

rightoguvnor · 31/07/2024 21:15

I'm not much taken with the Olympics coverage - too much of the talking heads and not enough of the action.
I was very disappointed that Night 2 of the Proms wasn't televised live - the BBC Proms is one of the corporations flagship events and to have the Disco Proms cast aside for more sport was so annoying. The Disco Proms was one where radio just didn't cut it - you needed to see the musicians, to see their faces and the composer. Very disappointing.
I've found over the last couple of years especially that the tinkering with the schedules for sport has been almost unbearable during the summer.
The scandals don't turn me into a cheerleader either.

The BBC couldn't do anything until he was charged. He wasn't doing anything at work, it wasn't anything to do with the BBC covering anything up. They have said today they would have sacked him if he was charged. Nobody knew.

What if everyone was fired from work just because they had been arrested, with no charge or proof to the employer of their crime?

This isn’t true. He could absolutely have been dismissed on various grounds. Criminal investigations work to a higher standard of proof - employers only have to believe something “on the balance of probabilities”.

the BBC are spineless

'During our encounters, did I have any clue that Edwards was anything more than a happily married father of five? I did not. He talked admiringly of his children and warmly of his wife, the current affairs producer Vicky Flind. As for any hint of paedophilia — a man so accomplished at concealing so much from so many for so long, would not have betrayed that inclination to anyone who was not of the same hideous bent.'

Am I surprised about Huw Edwards? Looking back, I shouldn’t be

The BBC presenter was a giant of broadcasting, but it’s now clear that he lived a life of anxious concealment

The BBC get lots of things right. Just their radio stations alone are brilliant.
