How much can one corporation get wrong before we all say enough?

The BBC can't win, can it?

Either we expect it to compete with commercial channels, which means similiar programs, and similar salaries to those paid in the market place. In which case, people complain that 'their' money is being squandered on celebs appearing in mass market crap.

Or we expect it to make programs that the commercial channels won't make, because there's not enough profit in it. And then people complain that 'their' money is being spent on crap programs that hardly anyone watches.

Me, I loathe Radio 4. I've neverr watched the Olympics. Blue Peter irritated me, even as a child. However I'm quite happy for the BBC to carry on doing that stuff, because there's plenty that the BBC do that I like. Even if the only things the BBC did for me was Match of the Day and re-runs of Whistle Test, I'd think it was worth the money.

Oh, there's the news. I've noticed that the left think it's biased to the right, and the right think it's biased to the left. This is good. It means that both sides feel that they are not being fairly represented by the BBC's news coverage. If both sides thought the BBC was impartial, it would mean that they were happy about how they're portrayed. And we don't want politicians to like how they are covered by the media. That would be most worrying.

I think a good metric of the BBC is Doctor Who and Children in Need.

Both have turned into abysmal farces. If I could stop paying the TV license and never see BBC again, I'd be all for it.

Well, you can. Just stop watching terrestrial TV, don’t use iPlayer, and you don’t need to have a tv licence

Calm down dear.

No need to be so patronising.

I'd like to have the option of choosing to pay to watch the BBC. If that was available I'd happily never watch it again. It's outdated and overpriced and full of scandal.

You do have that option already.

Needanewname42 · 01/08/2024 10:00

Can I just remind you that the BBC was asked to provide lots of educational resources through the Web pages during covid.

That alone demonstrates why we need a national broadcaster. It's not for the good times its for the bad times. And nobody knows what else could happen.

You sell it you couldn't be sure whos hands it would fall into. The world isn't exactly in a stable position.

Clingfilm · 01/08/2024 10:02

No. You don't need to engage with it if you don't want to (nobody's going to get you for not paying the LF) but I'll take the BBC's output over every other media anyday.

RainintheDesert · 01/08/2024 10:03

Apart from their Good Food recipe pages I don't bother with the BBC. I don't find their content entertaining, to be honest.

As to recent scandals I think they haven't really learned from past mistakes & continue to make missteps. I doubt their HR & PR department will improve. Another reason to ignore them, really.

Hyperion100 · 01/08/2024 10:05

BBC's nature documentaries alone make the license fee worth paying.

Yes, I feel we are lucky. You don’t have to feel the same.

I don't feel the same - obviously - which is why you can't speak for everyone by framing your comment as 'WE are incredibly lucky'.

What you mean is: 'I feel very lucky to have the BBC'.

A lot of us don't - and especially don't like paying for it!

I'm not going to allow someone to dictate how I phrase my opinions – I will phrase them how I wish to and you'll simply have to find some way of coping with it. Numerous post of this thread have phrased their opinion 'as fact'. A few examples:

The BBC is about the best free educational resource in the world / The BBC is something we should be immensely proud of / their radio content is unparalleled / Their news is hugely biased and has a strong bias towards certain groups / The BBC is excellent, world service and educational output especially.

Unless you care to come at every one of those separate posts for arbitrary phrasing, you can leave me alone – cheers.

Havent paid the tv tax since it came out about Savile, Glitter, Hall, etc

Sure, as PP have said, many large employers have problematic staff over the years, but this particular employer seems to be a magnet and a haven for absolute wrongens. And every time something else comes out its "Our internal investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing"

The poor mother of that 17 year old kid Edwards was abusing had to go public just to get something done; the BBC knew what was going on for a long time and did nothing, yet again. Same old shit.
And you can bet there'll be yet another internal investigation and no evidence of wrongdoing

Also remember the controversy re kids gender / sexuality lessons on BBC Bitesize, "there are over 100 different genders etc" -theres old threads on here about it.
I'm not funding that shit.

The BBC have lost all credibility in my eyes, I have no respect for them or the bullying tactics they use to try to force people to pay for a service They Do Not Want And Did Not Ask For

All the above aside, I'm not paying £170 a year for a government mouthpiece, boring repeats, and Strictly. They literally have nothing I want so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Get over phrasing my opinions how I want to on an internet forum, when in the comment you're attacking I replied to no one and tagged no one? Yeah, no thanks. Work on on your anger.

Not angry in the slightest.

You can absolutely phrase your opinions however you want. But if you make a bold, sweeping generalisation like 'we are incredibly lucky' to have something when you know so many people disagree, you'll be challenged on it. Simple as that really.

The fact you don't like being challenged on that opinion is neither here nor there.

Being challenged is absolutely fine on 'why' I think it, but not telling someone they categorically cannot phrase their opinion that way. I gave my expanded thoughts on being challenged way back earlier in the thread – couldn't care a jot about that. 'We are incredibly lucky' is not sweeping and bold – it's a big thread, it's four words and it's innocuous. The sole issue is you trying to tell other people how to type – which I'm not entertaining.

Technonan · 01/08/2024 15:33

Admired around the world, some of the best TV going - loads of channels, iPlayer and plenty of radio, brings in loads of revenue and still gives some space for new talent. All that and no adverts. They had no choice but to pay Huw Edwards. He resigned with no payout. As for Saville, everyone knew about Saville, including Thatcher when she gave him a knighthood.

It not only produces world class drama, the kind of drama and documentaries that other channels didn't dare touch, it has produced stuff that changed the law and social attitudes dramas like Cathy Come Home, documentaries like the Attenborough series. And sheer entertainment! Line of Duty, Happy Valley, Dr Who, Peaky Blinders, Killing Eve, Blackadder (remember the final WWI episdoe?) Strictly, Bake Off (started on the BBC and was better on the BBC) to name but a few.

Support the BBC

GB news maybe a better fit ? Any proof it’s a government mouthpiece btw ? Possibly since the tories appointed one of their own at the top who also allowed other politically compromised individuals to work in influential positions like the Farage lover who directed Question time.

I wasn't challenging you on what to type at all. I merely said:

'You can't speak for everyone by framing your comment as 'WE are incredibly lucky'. Because you can't speak for everyone. Obviously.

Saying 'we' when a lot of 'we' on here simply don't agree isn't innocuous at all - it's literally the sole point of the thread!

You're clearly very passionate about this. Don't work for the BBC do you?

I don't watch any BBC TV.

Neither do we. Stopped paying the license fee years ago.

Greedy, corrupt corporation; don't care how good their radio is.
We watch the streaming services that we choose to watch and pay for.

TizerorFizz · 01/08/2024 18:42

The BBC is cheaper than a load of streaming. I still like the model of the BBC and it will cost us as a country to lose it. I’m firmly with @Technonan . We don’t watch any streaming at all other than sport. Sadly the bbc doesn’t show what we like any more. What the BBC does give is better all round programming. Its news is reliable and its big occasion coverage is first class.

The big issue is that it’s a political football. It costs around the price of a decent coffee in Starbucks, yet everyone moans. Mainly because they pay for loads of other channels. The idea of not having the bbc is appalling.

Nope. Two of my posts on here have been about the BBC – one of which actually contained a criticism. The other four have been in reply to you, attempting to dictate how I phrase my opinions. If you want to call me passionate in the face of a pedantic obsession over four words, then yep – have a field day with that, I guess.

You just answered your own question re govt mouthpiece
