To think he shouldn't have been paid in full while off long term. As its more like being self employed.
But mainly cos it was 475k upwards of our TV licence money!
Another example is when a famous radio presenter s decide to go off for an extended break to film another show or something. Surely they don't get normal pay when they have extra weeks off not on air!!

This happens in most workplaces, our county police CC was paid his very high salary for months before being sacked for gross misconduct.

Really? Public sector maybe, I doubt very much any small to medium sized private businesses can afford to do this.

I was actually ill and in hospital and ended up on statutory sick pay (which isn't very much) - why on earth this man was paid so much when facing criminal charges is beyond me. Why does someone facing gross misconduct get paid more than someone who's ill? I'm guessing this is a 1% vs the rest of us issue.

I'm glad I no longer pay my tv license. Very easy not to, you just have to submit a declaration that you'll only watching on demand services, no live tv.

2 images of a child under 9.

Shocking.

Do we know the ages of the victims? I can't see to find them. Presumably they must have been aged 15 or under. Are we talking about 15 yr olds which is bad enough or are we talking younger?

Between 7 and 14. Horrendous.

CantDealwithChristmas · 31/07/2024 10:39

It's Vicky Flind I feel sorry for, she went to bat for him last year, became his spokesperson and media shield...and look at how he's treated her

BananaSpanner · 31/07/2024 10:40

It’s being reported that the BBC didn’t know about his arrest for the child porn. They were blindsided when the Met notified them at the point of charge a few days ago.

It may seem crazy that someone with his wealth and the seriousness of the case was paid, but remember those same legal protections would allow you to put food on the table if you were falsely accused at work.

we haven’t seen his contract, but we do know he has been on sick leave with depression. Since being outed for criminal activity, but prior to that had worked consistently despite apparently having depression since 2002. His depression didn’t prevent him working when his public image was intact. This is not legitimate sick leave in my opinion. It is a fiddle to get him off BBC screens for damage limitation. The honourable thing for him to do was resign and the proper thing for the BBC to do was investigate his conduct and sack him last year. He has been treated with undue kindness. Given the BBC has a finite budget and many low paid staff, and given its history of protecting paedophiles, I think it should be fined.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 31/07/2024 10:42

It's appalling. I can't believe the BBC knew nothing about this charge until a few days ago.

It's child abuse, not child porn.

Edwards has pleaded guilty to making indecent images. Source : BBC News. He is now a convicted sex offender.

Britain’s most senior & respected broadcaster has destroyed his life, his career & his marriage. What an absolute disaster for his family and, of course, for the victim. An extraordinary fall for the man entrusted with announcing the results of General Elections and the death of the Queen.

I agree. However it is Victims, plural. Every child in every image is a Victim.

I guess the BBC will have questions to answer. Glad I don't watch BBC content and thus require a licence.

I'd like to support British programming though and am really missing watching the Olympics, but scandals like this put me off ever rethinking my decision.

But I have also seen it reported that the BBC knew about it since June?

I think it does matter how much it is as its a crazy high level of money. Our money .
Should be certain rules. As I think we would all survive on half of say 500k while suspended... 🙄
We pay for it.

You pay for access to BBC. It’s not your money. You dpebt it and got exactly what you were promised.

Bunnycat101 · 31/07/2024 10:49

This is a lot worse than the narrative has been to date. The narrative previously was around the 17yo with people finding ways to excuse it. The charges publicised today are differently and clearly extremely serious especially given the very young ages of the children. Well done to the CPS for pursuing to this point- can’t have been easy to make the case to go after a public figure.

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2024 10:49

They would still be paying him now if he didn't resign in April. Though dunno how that works. Maybe they are still paying him a year later.

HR and senior management at the BBC can't freestyle the rules just because it's a state- subsidised broadcaster.

BBC love to protect what they think is a star.

Horrendous. I remember mn back then so many disbelieved he could have done anything wrong due to being the BBC connection

LiterallyOnFire · 31/07/2024 10:50

His trial only starts today. Innocent until proved guilty.

He pled guilty.

So sentencing is next.

ll09sm · 31/07/2024 10:51

It’s the BBC. What do you expect. This is how all public institutions waste taxpayers money. Because to them it’s free money.

Bunnycat101 · 31/07/2024 10:51

I’d also say re suspension. The first publicised case it probably was resonable to suspend pending investigation. These later charges very much should be gross misconduct and instant dismissal so really depends when the bbc found out.

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2024 09:58

BBC shouldn't pay the same amount when a presenter is having a long holiday or doing another gig for example 2 / 3 months.
BBC news presenters earn too much anyway.

Wonder what his hourly rate is based on? just presenting the news cant keep him busy 40 hrs a week?

So many defended him just because they thought he seemed so nice? Probably due to liking his accent.
I think its weird to really like a news presenter when they show nothing of their personality.

Being presumed innocent until found guilty is a cornerstone of a civilised and fair society.

I hate that he has been paid so much money, now that he has plead guilty. He obviously did it.

But I am very happy that if I were accused of a crime that I don’t commit, that I couldn’t just be sacked on the spot and not paid until the outcome of the police investigation.
