To be really freaked out about seeing someone that wasn’t there??

My partners mum, step-dad, brother and 2 nieces are on holiday at the seaside so to we took our little one for the a day trip to have a beach day with his cousins today.

As we were driving into where they are staying and my partner was packing I said to him ‘I didn’t know your whole family was here’ when I saw his grandma standing next to his mum. He must have assumed that I was talking about his stepdad as he didn’t respond to it in a weird way/ask what I meant.

Then when we were inside I asked where his grandma had gone and where she was sleeping as they only have 2 bedrooms. Well it turns out that she isn’t there and is at home and I couldn’t have seen her because she’s not there??

What on earth happened?? What/who did I see?? Am I crazy now? 🙈

@Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease "There are many things science can't explain and many things that science will never be able to explain. Not everything has a scientific explanation."
What sort of things do you mean?

Why some people ask witless questions but won't accept the answers.

Musicalitymum · 31/07/2024 16:13

Thanks OP, been thinking about this all day!

OMG

Had to google that - wasn't sure what kind of response would be.

I will definitely look into plop trumps Grin

This toilet humour phase is quite a long one.

Do people really believe that nothing exists outside of what science can prove/recreate?

I mean science is defined by the limits of human knowledge, science develops because of our understanding of the world, so simply because we cant prove something now, doesnt mean we wont ever, it means we have reached the limit of our current knowledge.

Surely people are not that arrogant to think we know everything?

@Rumors1 "Surely people are not that arrogant to think we know everything?"

Nope. Nobody thinks that.

AcrossthePond55 · 31/07/2024 17:19

@freakedoutseeingthings

The brain can play tricks on us and it doesn't like the 'unknown'. It can put a familiar face on someone who is really too far away to see clearly and we think it's someone we know. When they get closer, our eyes tell the truth. The brain can have us read a sign or a license plate a certain way, when we get closer our eyes see it clearly.

It can also put someone where they are not, especially if we are distracted or busy, because the brain may be used to seeing that person in a similar situation. So your first unconscious thought may have been "There is DH's family", the brain registered for a moment that DH's family included Gran so that's what you 'saw'. Your brain 'making its own sense' out of your unconscious words. But moments later your eyes 'took over' and she wasn't there.

So you aren't crazy or seeing things. It's just your brain.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 31/07/2024 17:22

Surely you're just used to seeing his grandma with his mum and imagined it?

I often think I've seen one of my deceased cats when I clearly haven't - it's just my mind playing tricks on me.

Mine found the game hilarious … just another level of toilet humour 😂😂

Maybe you saw someone else standing with your partner's mum and assumed it was the nan?

I see where you’re coming from here. I don’t think anyone thinks we know everything… but I do think many people think that all the stuff we haven’t found out yet will, when we get to it, fit into existing models and scientific systems. This is where I struggle.

The universe is such a vast, unknown entity that it seems reasonable (to me) that scientists might go onto discover phenomena that completely turn our ideas about reality, time etc on their heads - but many people laugh at this and seem to think that, yes, mysteries may be solved by future scientists, but the discoveries will fit neatly into current science-approved models of the universe. At least, that’s what I tend to take away from any discussion of the unexplained on MN so I tend not to get involved these days!

Can't stop chuckling - bet grandad will love that game.

I saw my dad on my driveway after dropping DD off at an activity early one evening. I thought what’s dad doing here as he lives 30 miles away and it was mid week, he doesn’t drive etc. I got out of the car and he was not there. Tried to call him no answer. My sister went round to his house and found him dead. He looked happy on the driveway which has given me comfort.

He called her and she answered so she’s alive and we’re going to visit her tomorrow. I still feel a bit weird though 🫣

I was once babysitting for my ds and BIL, I’d gone to bed in my nieces room before they came home, I woke up and my BIL was standing looking at my niece, I literally blinked and he disappeared. I shouted my sister, who clearly thought I’d gone mad as BIL was fast asleep. A few weeks later, he was sadly killed in a car accident.

@BernardBlacksBreakfastWine "I do think many people think that all the stuff we haven’t found out yet will, when we get to it, fit into existing models and scientific systems. This is where I struggle."

There might be different models and scientific systems on other planets-we don't know that. But on this planet we have a scientific system that works and which everything new we discover fits into. There really is no reason to believe that further new discoveries won't.

Sure. But there’s also no reason to think we might not have got some things kind of wrong. It’s on a different scale, I know, but isn’t there that moment when you start A level chemistry and they basically say, “yeah, all that stuff you learnt at GCSE, that was all essentially bullshit…”. Those models work fine… until you know more.

RavenhairedRachel · 31/07/2024 20:20

A colleague went to visit her grandma. She parked at the front of the house and her Grans elderly neighbour gave her a cheery wave from his armchair in the front window. She waved back. Her grandma asked who she was waving at she said the neighbour her gran said I was going to tell you he died this morning. 🙄

Yes I think this! The mind does play tricks...
I'm just glad Granny is ok !!!

RenoDakota · 31/07/2024 20:41

I (think I) hear the tinkle of my dog's collar sometimes. He died two years ago. I know it is just my imagination. A bit like 'Ernie's ghostly gold tops rattling in their crate'.

NotSoHotMess24 · 31/07/2024 21:18

Glad Granny is still kicking!

Jenasaurus · 31/07/2024 21:18

On a similar vein this got me thinking back to when I was a child and 3 women including my mum looked the same to me. Curly dark hair same
red anorak, same features all 5ft and same build. One lived in a road off mine the other lived in the same town and all were parents of children in my class. I remember calling out mum to them on more than one occasion if I spotted them at school gates or in the supermarket when I was there with my mum. I was so confused. My mum also looked the double of young queen elizabeth and it was often commented on. Some people have doppelgängers I think x

I would definitely be checking on granny.
When my DH died, before we even knew he was missing my then 4yo DS saw him. He said “Daddy’s walked through the wall but the walls not broken. Isn’t that strange?”
Found out later that evening he wasn’t in work as I’d thought and he had actually died.

Im sure granny is perfectly fine and you’re just having a funny 5 minutes but I’d be checking in on her.

That’s so sad. So sorry for your loss 😞

Jenasaurus · 31/07/2024 21:22

Although this could be me and the way I see features and people. I also remember thinking Valerie singleton from blue Peter was a news reader I saw on another station. It’s like my eyes dont see detail and my brain assumes it’s the samd person as before. A friend in hospital swore that Andy Peters was her nurse in hospital , she had a form of delirium though.

restingbitchface30 · 31/07/2024 21:38

I would keep an eye on gran. The night my exs nan died I woke up suddenly and saw a figure standing by my baby’s cot. It was dark but I definitely saw it. Then my baby woke up screaming. I was mum of the year and hid under the covers. When I plucked up the courage to look again it was by the door. I jumped up to get my baby and an hour later I got the phone call to say his nan had passed. I think she was saying her goodbyes. I can still picture it clear as day. People think I’m nuts but I’m a firm believer in these things since that day.

You would only know when or if the wrongness was pointed out. It may have happened several times, but you weren’t aware you were wrong and just accepted what you saw.

People often ‘see’ their dead pet. That little shadow at your heels, or the curled lump on the bed. It’s very persistent when the pet has gone.

Well I haven't seen any relatives or pets living or dead that shouldn't be there! I'm willing to bet it's sleep deprivation in most of these cases, that's well known to cause hallucinations and temporary psychosis type symptoms.

My mind will probably start playing tricks on me though just from reading this thread 😆

Yes, but that is science…a scientist is always ready to redefine and change as more evidence emerges. There is no fixed belief, science is infinitely open minded. For example, nothing can occur that is against the laws of physics..because if something is occuring or has occurred, the laws of physics will automatically change to include that. Technically nothing is impossible.
