I have changed my name for this, but there is so much negativity and hate towards JSO, Insulate Britain, and ER on these boards, that I really want to risk putting my head above the parapet and saying "WOOOHOO! I AM RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!"

These are wonderful people sacrificing their own liberty and careers to bring attention to their cause - and it really works! There have been huge benefits, so many companies are aware of them, and taking steps to avoid being in the firing line by upping their investments in environmental mitigations.

And the huge amount of attention that insulation got- it is now high up on so many agendas! Why did it take protesters gluing themselves to the road to do it? It should have happened anyway, but it didn't. People had to make that sacrifice, but themselves in danger, lose jobs, careers, liberty, etc, to get results.

People moan about having their days disrupted, etc by JSO, without caring how much their days are going to be disrupted by the climate crisis running out of control.

I have cancer. I couldn't get to a chemo appointment once because of JSO. I 100% support their actions. I think their cause is so much bigger than one person. They are acting to protect millions.

No doubt people will come here and bitch and moan and I don't care really, at least anyone from JSO who is on MN will see my thread title.

Someone will ram them over one day (if it hasn't happened already) if I was at Gatwick I would happily push through them. What entitled little twits. How did they get to the airport i wander? Unless they walked, they are hypocrites.

Well there are buses and - more likely - the famed Gatwick Express.

It's a not at all obvious that they drove there.

I still hate them but not because I assume they're hypocrites.

They're paid actors, their job is to convince you to believe a pack of lies. If you're so easily led, good for you. You don't sound particularly smart.

That simply isn't true.
Are you a climate change denier? 99.9% of scientists agree that climate change is real and man-made. I'm curious to know what's caused you to reach a different conclusion. If you have. I mean that very respectfully.

Has anyone seen them at Gatwick this morning. Honestly it is so embarrassing . Sitting there with their T-shirts and little orange home made boxes.

if they want to achieve something, someone needs to tell them how to organise, how to educate, how to publicise what they wish to achieve, how to target and work with companies who can make a difference, how to petition governments,

sitting on the floor at Gatwick airport is not the way to do this.

Yes the complete lack of any PR savvy whatsoever is possibly the most irritating aspect of all.

In the 90s, environmental protesters instructed various road building schemes (Newbury bypass, M11 link road etc) and won huge popular and community support. It can be done.

Oh don't be silly. They might be twerps but they're conviction twerps. How much do you think the day rate would be for serving a prison sentence whilst still in role?

Whenever I've seen people literally grab them by the scruff of the neck, and drag them across the road - I actually blush.

Imagine having such little self respect that you let a grown man do that to you??

lightinthebox · 29/07/2024 12:52

I do agree with you OP.

People hate them because they want to pretend climate change isn’t real. Business as Usual: several overseas holidays a year, driving everywhere and not changing lifestyle habits.

The outrage at JSO saddens me because it’s easier to vilify people than challenge governments to take action.

Yes, it’s disrupted people’s journeys but you’ve got to be delusional to think that infrastructure and hospitals etc won’t be affected by climate change. That’s not going to be as easy to fix.

Good luck getting to your dying relatives then, when the elderly and vulnerable are in over heated homes. Just look at the heatwave a couple of years ago and how disruptive that was. Kids couldn’t go to school because the buildings were too hot to be safe. But let’s conveniently forget that eh and have disgusting glee at those taking action.

Adviceneeeeded · 29/07/2024 12:59

@lightinthebox no ones is disagreeing they are right! It's the way they go about it we all are annoyed with! Disrupting joe bloggs from going about his day does nothing!

Target the government if you want change.

What they are doing is just making the public hate then which in turn is having the opposite effect!

But these were real environmental protesters who were protecting nature; JSO aren’t, their ideal is to instal solar farms over fertile fields and to carpet our countryside with electricity pylons.
Nature is not on their agenda.

Only just discovered this thread. Thank you for starting it OP.
I don't like many of JSO tactics. But, I do think they're brave and well-meaning; and the vicious vengeful posts on the other threads in recent days have been totally uncalled for and actually quite upsetting.
I'm glad someone was brave enough to start a more positive thread. I don't think I can bear to read all the posts here, as so many will be predictably unpleasant. But, I'm glad the thread exists.
I totally oppose the prison sentences they've received too.

Fair enough. Personally, I think they are incredibly arrogant and completely lacking in empathy for ordinary people.

lightinthebox · 29/07/2024 13:08

Target the government if you want change.

That’ll just end you up in jail now with protest laws. It is precisely because peaceful activism is easy to ignore that groups like JSO resort to extreme measures.

I also don’t agree with their tactics but understand the need for them.

Yes, they were disruptive for a few hours. That’s nothing compared to not taking action.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 29/07/2024 13:13

So, what exactly is their proposal OP? What will we do for energy once we have "stopped the oil" (whatever that means)??

Bunch of attention seeking wassocks.

NewDogOwner · 29/07/2024 13:23

They haven't been deliberately risking it all. They are privileged upper middle class individuals who assumed this would protect them and they wouldn't face any real consequences. Cressida's mother made that tone deaf video as they couldn't believe she had a jail sentence and would miss a family wedding. The only purpose of that seems to be that she believes this would help her get out of prison.

Izzynohopanda · 29/07/2024 13:25

“ What will we do for energy once we have "stopped the oil" (whatever that means)??”

That sums up how ineffectual their campaign is. More than one poster has said they haven’t researched what JSOs aims, as a result of the protests.

Motomum23 · 29/07/2024 13:26

I have no respect for those targeting people who are not in any power. Block parliament not gatwick. JSO are worthy of nothing but derision. Their protest actions lead to the deaths of people who's ambulance was stuck. They are responsible for their deaths and if I could bring back the dealty penalty as punishment I would.

henlake7 · 29/07/2024 13:28

idk, Im a fan of anybody who sticks their neck out to try and save the planet.
We've only got the one and there is going to be no use complaining when we have already f-cked it beyond all recognition (although I think we have reached the tipping point already).

Then again I dont have kids who will have to live the world and deal with it....maybe I should just say 'fook it!'.😎

DancelikeFredAstaire · 29/07/2024 13:37

So OP, when are you going to ditch all your tech devices as they not only contain oil but the minerals needed to make them are obtained by mining practices that are extremely harmful to the planet?

Why would they need to do that?

CautiousLurker · 29/07/2024 13:53

Shakeoffyourchains · 29/07/2024 13:48

Why would they need to do that?

Well, for the reasons stated in the post, given JSO are about halting climate change and desecration of the planet?

But also because of petroleum products used in both the manufacturing process itself and the component parts?

‘An increasingly wide range of computer components use petroleum derived plastics. Plastics are used as insulation to protect computer parts against heat. They’re also used in polymer capacitors which conduct electricity. Some computer casings also contain plastics, and they are capable of creating complete electronic circuits.’

DancelikeFredAstaire · 29/07/2024 14:02

Shakeoffyourchains · 29/07/2024 13:48

Why would they need to do that?

Well what would show more commitment for "the cause"....giving up something that requires oil, massive volumes of minerals and water and emits a shed load of CO2, or sitting at a gate at Gatwick. 1 action affects them, the other affects others. Until JSO are prepared to do without, then they have no right to expect others to do the same.

henlake7 · 29/07/2024 14:44

I agree it would suck if you have no sort of 'energy' to run your car or heat your house....but it would suck far more if you had no food because the majority of the planet is suffering famine conditions due to extreme climate change.

Id rather lose the mod cons then the basics like food and water!
