No- it's the North but not the North-East. North Yorkshire is not the North-East.

It's literally on the East coast, in the North.

The North East is a geographical location. It includes several counties. Much like the West Midlands is the West side of the middle of the country but has Warwickshire, Worcestershire, some of Staffordshire etc within it.

You can say what you like but you're just sounding like you don't understand location, direction or geography.

I know where it is but culturally it is not the North-East. I have never heard of Whitby being considered the North-East. North -East Yorkshire but not The North-East.

Another vote for Shropshire, moved her 3 years ago and the best thing I ever did.

You need to talk to more people then. The majority of the country would say it's North East, because that's where it's located.

I'm from the North East, and live elsewhere in the country. I've never heard anyone say Whitby or anywhere between there and County Durham is NOT in the North East of the country

Isn't Cambridge there??

What?
It's a big sodding county. It isn't just comprised of Cambridge.
The moon is nice and very few tourists

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 27/07/2024 06:53

Shrewsbury - we do get some tourists but nothing major, beautiful town, lots of nice places to eat and little indie shops and lots of beautiful countryside on your doorstep.

dottiedodah · 27/07/2024 06:54

Well dont come to Bournemouth! Roads choked up and sooo busy in Summer months! Really though most places that are nice will attract crowds. Maybe East coast.or Scotland /wales

Glasgow - I lived in Edinburgh for 10 years and Glasgow is better in every way.

I'm Scottish. Went to uni in Glasgow and grew up nearby. It's a friendly city, fab for shopping and eating/drinking out. Lots of green spaces and beautiful architecture. I have a soft spot for Glasgow, and my family still live there.

However I've lived in Edinburgh for the past 16 years and it is by FAR the superior and more beautiful city! Smile

It's also a city, rather than a town.

NE England in general is lovely though, and thanks to the "it's grim up North" tropes, doesn't get masses of tourists. Except places like Whitby on certain weekends.

I would disagree with this hugely, the north east, especially Northumberland, gets a huge number of tourists. I’m shocked so many on this thread don’t seem to think so!

It’s not comsidered the north east. The north east is an official region of the uk, one of nine in total. Whitby doesn’t fall into it, it falls into Yorkshire and the Humber.

Comparative to the rest of the big holiday areas like the South East, it's still pretty quiet.

AlisonDonut · 27/07/2024 07:28

Yorkshire and Humber is a different region from the North East.

PuzzledWatermelon · 27/07/2024 07:36

You could live on the outskirts of Ponteland or Morpeth (both in Northumberland) - these are your typical small town high streets and nice places to eat/drink. Morpeth has a much bigger high street than Ponteland but I would happily live on the outskirts of both of these places. This would allow you live a quiet hermit life.

Morpeth and Ponteland both have buses to get to Newcastle. Morpeth has a train station which can get you to Newcastle (and beyond) These places can get busy to drive through, particularly at the weekend but I wouldn’t say it gets crammed with tourists (tourists tend to go to Seahouses, Bamburgh, Alnwick, etc)

I live on the outskirts (north) of Newcastle but I do feel incredibly lucky I just have to drive 10 minutes and I’m in Northumberland - such a beautiful part of the country.

Good luck wit your research.

KimberleyClark · 27/07/2024 07:37

Vale of Glamorgan
Monmouthshire

Scarletrunner · 27/07/2024 07:41

Dumfries and Galloway. There are tourists but they’re mostly in their tents sheltering from the rain.
Transport connections not great ( hence few visitors) but once you get to Carlisle trains quite regular.

lookathatbookcase · 27/07/2024 07:41

Leamington Spa (or Warwick) - gorgeous countryside, nice shops/restaurants, good community stuff going on.

Luio · 27/07/2024 07:52

London is the most visited city in Europe and has the most tourists in the uk, so don’t come here! Fortunately, I like tourists. I really missed them in lockdown and I got quite excited when they started trickling back. I remember the first time I saw a group on a hen do after covid; I felt quite tearful and I still feel happy whenever I see one.

Most of the country isn’t particularly touristy though, so long as you avoid the obvious hot spots.

Inspired! 😂

And accurate.

The Southern part of Croydon has miles of beautiful commons and ancient woodland, downland, hills, and some lovely villages.

And public transport.

It scores very very very badly for tourists, though! They ruin it. Make up about a quarter of the population at peak.

It might help for suggestions if you were specific about what you find objectionable (or worse) about living in a place with lots of tourists.

Princes Risborough (Bucks) or surrounding villages, or Thame (Oxfordshire). No tourists, sweet little market towns, easy access to Oxford and London.

Came on to say this too.

Flumpie59 · 27/07/2024 10:18

Appleby-in-Westmoreland, Cumbria.

Population of 3,048.

PeterPedant · 27/07/2024 10:50

I think once you get off the organised tour trails - Bath, Oxford, Stratford-on-Avon, Chester, York - and the major cottage/camping locations (Cotswold villages, Lake District), most of inland England & Wales doesn't have hordes of tourists. Apart from London, obviously.

I live in Shrewsbury. We have three weekends a year when there are large numbers of visitors for events (food festival, flower show and folk festival) but the rest of the time there's a steady number of visitors who aren't obtrusive.

hairbearbunches · 26/07/2024 20:43

No. Not this anymore. The Telegraph and Sunday Times are pushing this area hard on articles for the holiday let market, Yields are through the roof because of vastly increased tourism.

Sssshhhhh !!!!
