Meon valley, Bishop's Waltham, petersfield. May be more rural than you are after, but lovely countryside, and nice market towns with no tourists.

Hm, 500k, don't need schools nearby, would like a few nice shops and restaurants, somewhere that's nice to be and interesting but for some reason no absolute hordes all summer crushing my will to live

Tired of Brighton are we?

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 26/07/2024 19:45

Sudbury in Suffolk

RedKiteMaidenhead · 26/07/2024 19:47

Princes Risborough (Bucks) or surrounding villages, or Thame (Oxfordshire). No tourists, sweet little market towns, easy access to Oxford and London.

Apppple · 26/07/2024 19:51

Angus. You'll get a mansion for 500k!

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/07/2024 19:58

Shropshire. North of the county gets hardly any tourists apart from canal boaters, who are all lovely.

GuiltyForEver · 26/07/2024 20:04

Wirral, lots of lovely villages. Train to Liverpool or Chester - yes there are tourists, but not unbearable

AtomicBlondeRose · 26/07/2024 20:06

Beverley? Can be busy on some days but rarely hideous. And the towns around Beverley (Driffield/Pocklington/Market Weighton) get no tourists to speak to, but aren’t as nice.

Stanleycupsarecool · 26/07/2024 20:08

Aberdeenshire, Ellon or Inverurie

South Croydon

Inspired! 😂

We moved to North Shropshire from SE Cornwall. Took some adjusting. However, love it so quiet, lovely lanes for cycling, canals are very picturesque and quiet. Hardly any traffic And no tourist season.

Butterflyfern · 26/07/2024 20:19

Tbh you should be able to find somewhere in most of the country if that's really your full list of requirements.

Look for famous towns and then look at what's about 30mins away. People go to the honey pot and leave the rest alone (eg Leamington Spa benefits from Stratford taking most of the tourists).

Another area not yet suggested is South Leicestershire, just south of Loughborough. Quorn, Barrow upon Soar, Woodhouse Eaves.

Or Worcestershire more generally

Ineffable23 · 26/07/2024 20:20

Bury St Edmunds might meet the requirements I think. Really not too many tourists. Maybe Ely but it might be too busy in the summer.

Northumberland/North Tyneside coast

Just going to say this!

EmberAsh · 26/07/2024 20:22

Surrey. It's a nice area to live but there's nothing worth visiting there.

Cyclingforcake · 26/07/2024 20:23

West Yorkshire. Stay out of the Dales and the tourists are around but there’s not hoardes.

Ineedanewsofa · 26/07/2024 20:27

RadRad · 26/07/2024 19:37

East Grinstead
Tunbridge Wells
Horsham

I’d agree with you except for the fact that we are on holiday just outside East Grinstead. There’s only 3 of us though, so not sure we qualify as a tourist hoard ;)

Unmute · 26/07/2024 20:27

Glasgow - I lived in Edinburgh for 10 years and Glasgow is better in every way.

Alexandra2001 · 26/07/2024 20:30

Limousin in central France, just come back from there, its empty but stunning, esp as you get towards the northern Dordogne

No where in England i'm afraid, my part of SE Cornwall was v un touristy but thats all changed in the last 2 or 3 years.

I second this.

There are tourists but not so many of them that it is noticeable but it is a lovely place to live with all you need nearby.

I don't get Glasgow. When I've visited I come away thinking I must have missed something/frequented the wrong areas. Why do you say it has everything? Am seriously interested as dd is about to go to uni there

£500k could buy you a lot of house in Northern Ireland with good links to Belfast.

Another vote for this

Come to the Isle of Man my dear, we have space and need more fellow hermits...

I think I’ll take you up on that offer if people don’t stop coming to Suffolk. It’s getting rather full. I prefer my former hermit existence to what is becoming of this once green county

Georgethecat1 · 26/07/2024 20:37

The Wirral, great connections to liverpool and Chester. Lovely beaches and woodlands
