No. Not this anymore. The Telegraph and Sunday Times are pushing this area hard on articles for the holiday let market, Yields are through the roof because of vastly increased tourism.

I agree. I live here and it is getting quite busy in the summer.

Gorgonemilezola · 26/07/2024 21:13

Scottish Borders. County Durham. Dumfries and Galloway.
Although nice shops/restaurants, not overrun with tourists might be a bit of an ask.
Barnard Castle is lovely but does get busy in summer. As is Hexham and Berwick on Tweed.
Nantwich?

InsensibleMe · 26/07/2024 21:15

Bognor Regis

Tourdefrancefan · 26/07/2024 21:18

Garstang in Lancashire, or Lancaster itself - lovely tiny city

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/07/2024 21:22

Country Durham . The shopping might let it down. But Bishop Auckland is having a lot of money spent on it.
Nowhere is safe from seagulls.
South Tyneside is nice or Whitley Bay has a nice high street.

Tonbridge
St Neots

It's also a city, rather than a town.

NE England in general is lovely though, and thanks to the "it's grim up North" tropes, doesn't get masses of tourists. Except places like Whitby on certain weekends.

Whitby is NOT north-east England. The north-east starts at County Durham- no further south than that.

Pandemonium123 · 26/07/2024 21:26

West Cumbria. No tourists, cheap housing, things are a bit backwards in a good way. It's like going back 8-10 years in time. Strangers greet each other, everyone has time to chat, businesses get new clients by word of mouth. The sea, lakes and mountains are on your doorstep. It's paradise here

FurForksSake · 26/07/2024 21:26

Rural Northamptonshire.

Northumberland/North Tyneside coast

Exactly what I was going to say! I was going to add Durham, as well.

Lovely countryside, some nice smaller towns, stunning coast and I found the people to be really friendly and nice as well.

If it wasn't for the fact that I live at the opposite end of the country and don't know a soul any further north than Suffolk, I'd be considering it myself.

Northumberland, it’s beautiful and very quiet, not many tourists at all compared to popular tourist areas.

But VERY quiet compared to popular tourist areas - it’s all relative.

Pembrokeshire - but in a bit from the coast. Much of Wales, actually.
North Yorkshire.

Ophy83 · 26/07/2024 21:32

Forest of Bowland. Just below the Lake District and stunning but most people haven't heard of it.

Pleasedontdothat · 26/07/2024 21:32

County Durham - there’s some truly stunning countryside here, lots of history, pretty towns and villages (well not all of them, but enough ..) and virtually no crowds ever.

greengreyblue · 26/07/2024 21:33

Durhum is quite run down. Hardly any shops these days. Very different when students are fa not there.

notprincehamlet · 26/07/2024 21:35

Royston Vasey

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/07/2024 21:36

Whitby is North Yorkshire. North Yorkshire is nice or maybe the nicer area around Middlesbrough (Yarm ).

There are lots of nice places to eat and drink coffee.

RantyMcRanterton · 26/07/2024 21:42

Monmouthshire? Abergavenny area as well.

GoFigure235 · 26/07/2024 21:43

Wokingham or Farnham.

Tisfortired · 26/07/2024 21:45

I came on to say Northumberland - which is ironic really as I just came back from holiday there! We go quite a lot, it’s our happy place. But - to me Northumberland just feels so big, open, calm. It’s also so beautiful and full of history and things to do.

parkrun500club · 26/07/2024 21:46

Farnham
Godalming
Romsey
Tunbridge Wells
Tenterden
Petersfield

Wokingham

Ribchester, Whalley, Barrowford, Roughlee - £500k would go a long way. Beautiful countryside and lovely areas to live.
