Belper, Derbyshire.
Lovely market town on the edge of the Peak District. Good rail and transport links.
Pretty, good cultural scene and on the edge of beautiful countryside - Bakewell, Buxton, Chatsworth, just far enough out though not to feel touristy.

👆 this.

No. Not this anymore. The Telegraph and Sunday Times are pushing this area hard on articles for the holiday let market, Yields are through the roof because of vastly increased tourism.

Recently went on a Long weekend to Lincolnshire as a last minute whim, knowing nothing about it. I was so surprised. Its is such a pretty city. Reminded me of a mini York but not half as touristy. Very rural around it.

greengreyblue · 26/07/2024 20:45

Yea Lincoln is lovely by quite cut off.

Aberdeen. It’s absolutely fantastic with a great airport. The tourists go to Balmoral etc which is 40 miles outside. Very well paid jobs in a very multicultural city with 2 very respected universities

The seagulls, though. I know I didn't specify no massive seagulls in the op.

I disagree. It’s dreadful and heaving with tourists. Don’t come here.

(I live here and it’s brilliant and want it all to myself)

Non touristy but nice town - Newcastle u T.

Rammed full of students though, but does get quiet in the summer.

It's also a city, rather than a town.

NE England in general is lovely though, and thanks to the "it's grim up North" tropes, doesn't get masses of tourists. Except places like Whitby on certain weekends.

Agreed. Our once quiet village is now heaving with tourists and we’re all being priced out.

Yeah I love the north east tbh jesmond or sthg would suit me down to the ground I think.

Look at the South Downs National Park. It's very lovely and certainly has some tourists but not over run. For some reason West Sussex is not really in the tourist map. The SDNP stretches from Winchester to Eastbourne to Hampshire and East Sussex too.

Apologies. Just lock everything down as you come out of Sainsbury’s. . My daughter’s entire sandwich was snapped in the packaging last year

Owlcat42 · 26/07/2024 21:09

Norwich is great, and unlike Cambridge is never swamped with tourists because it's out on a limb. Property is generally cheap and there's plenty of rural options nearby if you want more hermitage
