Should kids be naked on a public beach

If so, at what age should they put a cossie on?

Your kids can cope with seeing women's breasts.

I'm not against topless sunbathing, as long as it's in a place where everyone consents. The idea of forcing your chest on others (to educate the children? To prove a point?) is grim to me. We don't need people with it all hanging out to educate other people's children.

Deeply uncomfortable and unfair for young people to have to experience that around their family members, too.

Eh ? What is unfair on who ? All my aunts went topless on the beach when I was a teenager, you honestly don't notice it after a while.

Except innocent children can run naked around a beach.

Clearly not going by a lot of people on this thread who won't let them. And that's said without judgement, they're doing what they think is best for their kids.

mitogoshi · 26/07/2024 17:27

Normal in mainland Europe. It's only English speaking countries it seems who are obsessed with swimwear for tots, go to beaches in the med, Baltic etc and up to around 3/4 are naked and girls up to around 10 are just in bottoms

mitogoshi · 26/07/2024 17:30

And what will really blow your minds is that in Germany in particular, but also Nordic countries people, adults swim naked after, even in swimming pools, also resorts popular with German tourists often have a clothing optional beach, I quite like swimming in the sea naked myself

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 26/07/2024 17:35

‘What do you think half of the rest of the world does though?’

I think more than half the rest of the world NEVER take their clothes off in public!

Most of the Middle East, much of the Far East , large swathes of Africa, the subcontinent…many of these countries not only disapprove of public nudity, it attracts considerable legal, penalties.

Look, you strip your kids naked and let them run around, swagger about naked or partially clad yourself, but don’t pretend that somehow that the UK is the only country where such behaviour is seen as a bit off.

( I expect it’s not popular amongst the Inuit, either🥶)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/07/2024 17:36

If a man is that way inclined I'm not really sure it matters wether a child is naked or dressed tbh.

I live close to the beach, we have a beach hut and the kids are in and out of the sea. One evening I spotted a woman taking pictures on the prom, camera was pointing directly at the children playing - some were naked (not mine). I found it odd so went over to speak to her. She was quite cagey when I asked what she was taking pictures of which ring alarm bells naturally!! She hurried off .. a little while later I spotted her again and this time confronted her with one of the male beach hut neighbours who happens to be a local police sergeant. He took her camera off her, all the pictures were zoomed in shots of the kids. She was arrested and charged. Turned out she was supplying these pictures to peopdo rings online for money. From that day on I've never allowed any child known to me on the beach naked. There's some very sick people among us!

I hope everyone on this thread who's been insinuating that people who say kids should be covered up on the beach are being prudish see this post and take note. That's absolutely chilling.

Indeed if the beach/ riverbank/ sauna isn't that place what is ?

Oh, I dunno... in the privacy of one's home or on a designated nudist beach, maybe? And yeah, saunas if it's typical in that scenario (never been in one, so couldn't comment).

You'd go naked on a riverbank?!

Neurodiversitydoctor · 26/07/2024 17:55

Topless yes somewhere like this- would need to be at least 30° though so I think your sensibilities are safe in the UK

Exactly right!

Dancingqueen18 · 26/07/2024 18:20

The irony is there is a welcome move towards teaching children there are parts of their bodies which are private. How on earth then is it appropriate to condone being naked amongst everyone in sundry on a beach. The sun is shining, your on a beach, thats ok but not in the street. Absolute hypocrisy.

Even with people around??

Babbahabba · 26/07/2024 19:25

There's just no need or reason for it- why do kids of any age need to be naked in public?

Mountainhowl · 26/07/2024 20:19

My youngest will get changed on the beach with no worries, I stand in front of him and it's just a quick change. My eldest is more self conscious now so we surround him with towels to change

They don't play naked on the beach, mostly because I don't want to cleaning that much sand out of buttcracks! But they have paddled in pants before when we've ended up at the beach without actually planning for it

There's just no need or reason for it- why do kids of any age need to be naked in public?

Why do kids need to wear tutus in public?
Why do kids need to wear dress up costumes to go to the supermarket?
Because they want to. Not everything is utilitarian.

Ok, and so what? Because you didn't mind other people's (children's in this case) opinions don't matter? It's fine for you to make other people's children 'cope' to prove a point? It's weird. Imagine if it was a man.

I don't think asking for consent when going against social norms is a big ask. In Europe or whoever else, they do it their way, because that's their normal.

S1lverCandle · 26/07/2024 20:44

A kid wearing a tutu and dress up costumes is dressed @AvrielFinch . False equivalence.

MrsGarrison · 26/07/2024 20:46

And again, I'm not against women being topless. If quote like a bit of sun on my chest, because it's several shades lighter than most of my body. But it's so weird to insist other people/children must cope with it. Go in your garden, go to a beach that allows that, or go on holiday.

CuteOrangeElephant · 26/07/2024 20:58

I knew Mumsnet users were prudish but this thread take the crown 👑.

If DD sees a woman sunning topless and asks questions I will give her a simple answer: because the lady wants to and men are allowed to go topless on the beach so why shouldn't women.

Yes I only do it in Europe or my garden

Dancingqueen18 · 26/07/2024 22:45

If pro nude children on beaches is acceptable then just hold your hands up & say I don't care if people with dubious intent take photos cause sadly it happens 😡

Nothing nicer than a sandy toddler pottering about with a spade in a sun hat and little else.

Really?
