Why ?

Simply because I have absolutely no desire to see a strangers genitals in full view, nor to have them seeing mine. Showering in public with a clean bathing suit is no less hygienic than showering naked before entering a pool. The regular testing of the water & added chemicals take care of the nasties which will be introduced no matter what the rules are regarding showers.

Even though in many ways it's been tough, in others I'm glad I that I brought my children up in a place where safeguarding wasn't at the forefront of every single thought and permeated society.

Here, kids run and play naked on the beach and swim without armbands.
It's madness I tell you😆

No - both my DS & DD wear sun protection tops / bottoms on the beach.

I'm not sure why they need to be naked especially with now known skin damage issues and smart phones.

I also wouldn't want them playing on the beach with naked kids either, for multiple reasons.

I caught a guy unsuccessfully hiding in bushes with a camera messing around with himself - he was next to a playground with water and kids were naked. Absolutely reported him there and then, went into the park and alerted parents. Really horrid and I had a newborn at the time, so no way would I every let them naked in public.

Including your newborn ? How do you manage nappy changes ?

Britsfivk · 26/07/2024 14:29

Certain countries in Europe and most of the kids up to about 8 are naked and even after the girls only wear bottoms. My kids find it awkward to play with naked kids but that's because they are so fair they combust in the sun and I cover them.

So do you walk around stark naked yourself on a public beach ( not a nudist beach)? If not, why would you let your child?

I dont live in the uk. Many walk around naked on our beaches. Noone cares. Yes i have

Werweisswohin · 26/07/2024 14:29

Not ideally, no.
Perhaps briefly to change into swimwear, but ideally you'd use a big towel/changing towel.

Never go to a spa/sauna in the Netherlands/Germany or the Nordic countries. Almost all of them forbid bathing suits for hygiene reasons.

Interesting answers.

I posted the question while sitting on the beach watching a couple of naked kids running around. They were probably 5/6 a boy and a girl.

I didn't feel comfortable tbh.

I wouldn't let my kids be naked in public. I wouldn't think much of seeing other people's but 5/6 is way to old

I actually think it's important that children do see other peoples genitals in appropriate enviroments so they know there is a huge range of normal and don't think the pornographic images which they wil be exposed to represent normality.

Then do not go to countries that demand you shower or sauna naked and complain about it.
It is common in other countries to shower before getting into a pool, not in Britain though. A lot of British pools are very unclean.

Me too. Who cares?

crackofdoom · 26/07/2024 14:34

We live in a pretty bohemian part of the coastal SW.

You can always tell it's tourist season because suddenly all the toddlers are wearing those horrible all- over UV suits. Out of season it's wall to wall* feral naked moppets round here.

*cliff to cliff really I suppose.

What a shame that we live in a world where innocent children can't run about naked on a beach.

But we do.

Wrong, there are rules in the UK regarding showering before entering the pool with clear signs telling people. The vast majority of people adhere to this. There are also lifeguards who test the water regularly throughout the day.

AvrielFinch · 26/07/2024 14:36

Most people go under for 1 or 2 seconds. It is not cleaning themselves. Purely performative.

When very little they didn't go the beach as too hot, as soon as they were chunky babies, yes had sun protective suits / hats and swim nappies, not a problem changing them, I mentioned my newborn in my post as I was walking past the park with my newborn and the experience I had enforced my intention not to have my kids naked in public. We've also had skin cancer in the family - so that has impacted my decision too.

CremeEggThief · 26/07/2024 14:38

In my opinion, babies and children should never be naked in public, and any parents and carers who allow this are putting them at risk for online exploitation. I know that might sound OTT, but it's something that's always made me uncomfortable since the days when my DS was little in the early 00s.

Gettingannoyednow · 26/07/2024 14:38

I don't really get why people think a swimsuit or nappy will stop a paedophile from perving on or otherwise targeting their kids.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 26/07/2024 14:39

So how do you manage nappy changes oitside without exposing your child's genitals ? How do you toliet train if they are never naked ? A fully clothed infancy is just such an alien concept.

honestyISkind · 26/07/2024 14:44

Again, no.

And not just because nonces love it and sunburn causes skin cancer. Both true.

Babies and toddlers don't need sand dirt or filth in their vaginas or bottoms. Yes, that happens. Long ago lived near a feral lazy woman who used to let her poor little girl out in the front garden naked and her arse and nether regions were usually filthy looking. Her neighbours kept trying to make the dirty, lazy cow listen, I moved away not long after so don't know if she ever did.

It's incredibly simple to put them in something appropriate and comfortable. Just do it.

Stop being stupid, stop whatabouting. If you want to sound like a Gwyneth Paltrow knock off wannabe steam your own clams and stop trying so hard to be boho using little Tarquin and Starlight to prove you're so free and progressive and speshul.

Nobody thinks you're speshul. They think you're either irresponsible or stupid.

(And that's not a typo. I know how to spell special.)

A fully clothed infancy in public shouldn't be. And toilet training would be happen mostly at home so that's irrelevant.

I was when I was little. We’d go on holiday to Greece every year and I’d be naked all the time on the beach until I was about 6. I was also never sunburnt. The first time I got sunburnt I was a teenager and it was my own fault!

For those who state it is unacceptable- from what age. If babies have nappy rash we frequently suggest " nappy off" time. I think it is ok in child still in nappies maybe up to the age of 3 or 4, at this age there would alway be a parent present. From reception up I would expect swimmies on. Absolutely gobsmacked some PP would even let kids naked in their own garden.

Nappy off time is generally in the privacy of the child's own home. You wouldn't take them to Tesco with their bum on display, telling all around you "It's ok, it's just because he has nappy rash", would you?
